But all thia is only trilling with thc gracd drama; it was but the rising ar.d penile pre- | lode of ?1x9 mighty tempest, which thc great | Incendiary was determined tc hurl against tba 1 "devoted city. Let us hasten on ! About 4 o'clock on the morning of the 16th ult., thc Confederate forces evacuate^ the city, having, however, destroyed the bridges over the rivers above named. The enemy crosaed over by their pontoons and small boats, and were on their-march on the city by 10 o'clock the same day. The Mayor, attended by some civilians, went out to meet Sherman, and offered him, in person, tho possession of the city and its surrender unconditionally, which was indig nantly refused. At the head of a large and well disciplined army, the sacriligeous Incendiary rode in all tho majesty of self-conceit; before him was a stolen carriage, well equipped and drawn by stolen steeds of rare beauty and excellence. This was a triumphant chariot, which was decorated with Yankee flags, Southern rib bons, flowers, and various trinkets used by our school girls. The main army entered the city from the West, and marched in military array through thc principal streets. There were no strag glers. AU was order, decorum and strict discipline. The troc ps were well clothed, and all were in the prime of manhood. ?It was evident from the.healthy and jovial -ap pearance of the wholo army, both officers and privates, that they had lived luxuriously on the spoils of the citizens of this State. I wa4 informed by an officer that such was the abondance o? provisions on their" line of march that in many instances they only con sumed the choicest parts of beeves and de stroyed the rest. Old wines, brandies, &c, which had been treasured lor years, supplied tho officers, whilst the common soldiers slaked their thirst with more recent and common beverage. I found, by personal observation that there were not fifty sick persons belonging to the army, and none were dangerously so. The horses and mules were unquestionably in splendid order. These animals v,-!/re selected -1 from tho best stock in the State. I have been \ informed on indubitable authority, and, ? have witnessed several instances myself, that when ever horses, mules, cows, &c, were not selec ted for any purpose, they were, in most in stances, shot-down, or otherwise destroyed. The superior officers of the army eotablish ed their headquarters on the outskirts of the city, and allowed the common soldiers and - inferior officers to enter and pillage the town. When all was. arranged, and the proper disposition made of. baggage, ?c., the cit} was given up to pillado. The work of #plun der took place abou? I .o'clock of the same da}r on which they entered thc city. At first, only stores, ware-houses and banks were robbed. I hare Avitnessed the plundering of several banks and stores, and such a scene 1 trust never again to seo. Officers, privates and negroes were mixed in one promiscuous gang, all and each cursing, swearing, blas pheming, breaking open close ts, trunks, desks, &.<:., and hurrying away laden with the silver and golden ware, jewelry, &c. The plunder thus obtained artst have bern immense, as several of tho Charleston banks bad been re moved lo this place, when that city was threatened by the enemy. The people here were entirely unprepared for tbis general ile slruction. on account of the rumored clemen cy extended to tue people of Georgia by the Incendiary. Similar Scenes of robbery were being per petratcd in various parts of the city, and con tinued so tji! night. In fact, the whole anny was converted imo u grand gang of robbers, and they plied their" avocation;; with anpar alled assiduity. Nearly every house in-the town was sn o plied with a guard, whether by order o! proper officers or merely volunteer, I cannot assert They were indee i faithful guardians ! but faithful to their !ust of plunder. Tbty# ' dissembled, deceived .ind led several into f&lsO security* The citizens. literally feast??'" ibcm, hoping thereby to st euro their prot?t tion. lt is my firm conviction that these men wen: poste-i ??i every house for Ute purpose destroying them, er throwing the people uff ! their euard.
