From the Soutlarn Agriculturist, 1853.. FIllERS, RaSE YOUR OWN JIOCS. HenryBurton, an excellent neighbor and most successful ya ;fIi" '"this District, with. a list containing the weights of a number of hogs killed by him last winter. From that we glean the following particulars: Mr. Burton killed twenty-two hogs two years old; the average weight of which was nearly 351 lbs. The heaviest of this lot weighed 434 lbs. He also killed one fourteen months old which weoighed 310 lbs. Fifteen of one year old average -177* lbs., the heaviest weighing 212 lbs. Somrpof. our readers will recollect the monstrous hog Mr. Burton exhibited at the last Agricultural Fair at this place. Having prepared him properly and fattened him as wvell as an overflowing corn crib would ena ble him, be killed him the 23d of last month and he weighed gross 790 lbs., neat 7011lbs. We have forgotten his age; if we mistake not he was three years old. The whole number of hogs killed by Mr. Burton of his own raising was 71, averaging 282* lbs. a head. Now, is not Mr. Burton's success encouraging to others to followv his examplei He-made a large cotton crop, too, plenty of corn of course, and an abundance of every thing else that-can be raised on a farm. FRUIT CANS. To th&e Editor of the Newbierry AMirror : You will oblige our lady friends by inserting the following simple and excellent method of preserving fresh fruits. This discovery is important as it will supercede the trouble *of preserving thenm in sugar, as has been the c.ustom, the flavor of the fruit thereby being entirely destroyed and rendered unwhole some. By attending to the plain directions which follow;any -housekeeper can put up a . supply of fruit for winter use. ': J : . :- Wx Sakana. S.LF-SLaaLIT . CAzs.-Take a common fruit jar. with a tin cover made like a shoe. black :box, the jar and the cover will proba bly cost twelve cents, and hold a quart. Any of the cements that are used for sealing cans - or jars will do for this. Heat your fruit either in the jars, (or in a preserving kettle would be preferable and pour in the-jars, previous ly warming them. -Now pour enough of cement in the cover to give the bottom and side a thin coat. When the cement becomes slightly stifi apply the cover over the jar, the jar having been well filled, and turn the'jar upside down, and here is the invention.' .As frait jars have a lip, you have a little trouigh to fill with cement, and, the ,work is done. Let your jars-get cold, standig on the cov ers, and put them away in the 'same position. It is the steani escaping in the common way of sealing or soddering cans that leaves so many of them imnperfect. The plan- re commended above, entirely obviates -'this difficulty,, as the steam or Vapor is always on top of the fruit. This arrangement, you perceive,' is merely a chemists pneumatic trough, and there is no danger when your fruit has been cooled down snd created a va *cum, that tife external atmospheric 'pressure -will force the cork out. As some persons may not understand the nature of the cement that is used I add a re cipe for preparing it: . - . i * To every ounce of Shell-lack, (or Seed lack being cheaper is commonly used) add one and a half ounces of Rosin, which can be procured at any tinner's shop, reduce all to a flie powder. Melt over a moderate fire and apply. as wanted. .If two ounces of rosin'is added, and a little beeswax melted. with the cement it is an improveent. '' W. S.. Soass oN Hoasas AmD-CATTE.-A cor respondent of the Maine Farmer, in yeply to an inquiry by s'nother corresporident for a cure of a bad sore on a -horse's shoulder, gives the following prescription : 'Lime and lard are the bestapplication to old, bad sores, .of, any -kind, that I knowv, especially Itthe bonris'any affected. Take good stone lime, slake dry, and sirt through a fine sieve. Put the flour in a bottle, cork tight,. and keep it in a dark place from the light and air, and it will keep good for years. Some allowance wil be necessary for the different strength o the lime. AN INFALLInLE RzcIPE.-At this seasol 'when dysentery becomes very prevalent we can recommend the following means , curing the same, which are within the reac of eyery person at aknost every hour: Take one tablespoonful of common salt-an mix it with two tablespoonfuls of vinega and pour upon it a half pint of water, eith Lhot or cold-only let it be taken cool. wine-glassful of this mixture in the abos proportions, taken every half hour, will l found quite efficatious in curing dysenteri If the stomach be nauseated a 'wine. glai full every hour will suffice. For a child ti quantity should be a teaspoonfulof,.salt an one of vinegr, in.a teacwpfuldf wateir.
