tbq'Savannah Valley Railroad Company- was
hold it Calhoun's Mills, S. C., on Wednesday,
the 18th inst.
Mr. Sloan, of Anderson District, was elected
President of the Company. in the place Mr. Cal
houn, who declined a re-election.
A resolution was adopted authorizing the
President of the Company to reeceive contracts
for grading the road from Hamburg to Ander
son, so soon as the sum of $600,000 in stock is
subscribed, and the State stock of $250.000 is
secured. No contracts for grading were autho.
rized to be made until after the 1st of June next.
The gentleman who politely furnished us the
above facts, also stated that th'e feeling exhibited
in.'the meeting indicated "no such thing as fail,"
in the construction of the Savannah Valley rail
road.-Augusta Constitutionalist.

THE CABINET.-It is pretty definitely settled
.that the Cabinet of Mr. Buchanan will be com
posed of the following persons; Secretary of
State, Gen. Cass; Secretary of War, ex-Gov.
Floyd, of Va.; Secretary of the Navy, ex-Gov.
Brown, of Tennessee; Secretary of the Tren
Bury, ex-Gov. Cobb. of Ga.; Postmaster General,
J. Glancy Jones, of Pa.; Attorney General, Isaac
Toucey, of Connecticut; Secretary of the Inte
rior, Jacob Thompson, of Mississippi.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.
CONGRESSINAL.-The Senate has passed the
bill confirming the titles to the States to swamp
lands, has passed the bill introduced to secure
an equal distribution of the public lands to the
States, and to increase the pay of the army of
ficers.
In the House the bill to repeal the laws of
Kansas, ordering a new election of the legisla
ture has been passed by 20 majority. The sub
marine bill has been re-committed to the Com
mittee of Ways and Means for amendmient.
Mn. Divis, from the Corruption Committee,
made a special report in regard to Gilbert, re.
commending his immeditte expulsion. An exci
ting debate ensued.
The Committee upon the charges of Corrup.
have also reported in favor of the expulsion of
Messrs. Welch, Edwards and Mattison, and of
Mr. Simonton as reporter.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 20.
CABINET AFFAIr.-The friends of Gen. Cass
state that he received to-day a notification of his
appointment as Secretary of State.
It is also rumored that J. Glancey Jones will
decline any appolintment in the Cabinet.
A pis->ner in the Michigan penitentiary, ser
tenced to solitary confinement, was found dead
in his cell. A stean pipe passing through the
cell to warm it had bur.t, and as no cry ol help
ciuld .e heaid by the kee, er, to save himnseif
from being ceoked to deAth the poor man cut his
throat.
