TO THE LADIES.
R ECEIVIEG RECENTLY A LETTER FROM
a yoiung lady in Alabama, I shall take the liber
ty of publishing a portion of it, and shall also take
ocedasion to make the subject of that letter serve m
r by way of a " text" for my adverisement of this week;
e and in doing so, it will, I know, be duly regarded and
1 appreciated by the ladies, especially the young ladies,
I who make perstnal appearance and attraction a study.
There is no country in the world that, can produce a
greater array of pretty faces than ours, mid it is also
true that there is no country where there are so few
finely developed forms among the female sCX its in
ours. Why is that! Why is it that the ingenuity of
the milliner and dresms-maker is taxed to the itmost to
give tie appearance of reality? Why is it int formsn
once full, round and plump, have become shrunken,
r thin and bony ! lint to the letter:
" DEAa Sta: Were it not from conviction of your
Shospitable feelings toiwards a good number of patients
who annoy you with the narraition of frivolous and
fancied ailments, I should never he embolened to
undertake so awkward a task as the consulling you
in relation to myself; and if, after staling my condi
tion, which I conceive t# be the result of simne dis
ease-what, I know not-you sAmuld regard it as
purely of the imagination, ratmher than actual diseake,
a statement to that efiect from youwould, I am confi
dent, prove as remedial to the fancy, as would your
remedies, did aciual disease exist.
I have always enjoyed the best of health, and up to
the prosent time hardly have known what pain or
suffering was. I (l not now remeniler ever to have
had a spell ofrsirkness, or being in any way indispne
sed, with the exception, perhais, of an ortsesiaitl and
but very tlight headiacie. My apeetite is good-per
haps too good- I digest my loo. without diflficity;
can walk without ittigue. I sleep well, and can say,
as I have already said, that I apparently enjoy the
best of health. Yet, notwitlistanding the mass if
testimory in favor of my heing entirely exempt i rom
disease, there is a condition of system that I am una
ble to account for. I allude tio lie fact that for lihe
last eighteen or twenty-four moitthis I have entirely
Jost the rotu idity of from wihu has always been na
tural to me ttp to the time referred .o. It is now near
two years since I first discovered that I was gradually
'oing flesh, and at t hu present nie, my arms, neck,
and in fAct the whole person, which was oncve full,
round ani firn, are now very much shrmiken, aiten
uated anl bony. Relieving that such a cotndition of
body could nt take place. at any rate cmiitintie tit
exist for so long a period, n ithnlit having for its cause
diseased action sonewhere, I applied for medical
advice, hlnt without gaining either satisfaction or any
benefit. I was told by one physician that I would
regain my flesh afterawhile-hy another that I would
recruit as soon as cold weather came, and by another
that as soon as warm weather came I would be as
fleshy as ever. And now, sir, I apply to you, not only
for an'opinion, but for treatment, if, in'your judgment,
the case demands is," &c., &c.
Most certainly does the case demand treatment, and
for two reasons viz: that diseased action may be re
movel, and that the rotundity of form may lie restor
ed. The latter is accomplisited by the removal of the
former, which is not only the cause in the above case,
but in all others of like character. Tle idea that a
thin, spare habit is natural to some, is eitirely errone
ous; for in every instance it is the result of disease,
either hereditary or produced by natural causes. As
a matter for consideration by physicians, this one has
been almost totally disregarded ; and one of greater
importance can scarce be mentioned ; important not
only from the fact that vital organs are diseased, and
also because of that disease, beauty of form and come
liness are sacrificed.
Let us now look into the cause of this trouble.
What is it ? Why this shrunken, lean and bony con
dition ? It is a faly nutirition ; the body is imper
fectly nourished, from the fact that good, rich and
healthy blood is rot present, and throughli which alone
can the body be welrnoutrished and dily developed.
Why is not good, rich and healthy hloo.d prsent ?
fer certaimly, in many cases, thirre is no lack of appe
tite, or of good, substantial and wholesome food, and
plenty of it, which makes good blood. The reason is
simple-for altiingh there is no wanting (if appetite,
or of good flood, amid in almrilance, yet the foiod is not
taken up and carried into the circulation. or at any
rate, hut a small portion of it-and why? B-cause of
the congestive stute of the digestive organs. That is
the trouhle-the system is in that precise same state
that it would he were it in a half-starved condition.
And now, how is it that a congested state of the di
gestive organs prevents the food from being carried
into the circilation and converted into good blood.
Those who inve read my advertisement or last week
are fully acquainted, I think wiith the way that tie
food is 'carried iunto time circulatiotn in th'e form of
chile, and conver'ed ito blood, and it now onily re
mains for me to give the reason iwhy it is riot, in time
condition iuder consideration, carried there and conm
verted into gootd blood. 'The mucns membrane whlich
lines time stomach continues oni into time boiwels anid
lines them also; it is onme continuous metmbirane. I
have already descibmed how, in the tipper houwelIs,
-their sides are piercedl with am iinnumeramble numnber of
little orifices, which are maombls of little vessels or
tubes, whose office is tom absoirb or take imp time food
after it is fomed into chile and pass it along intmo a
large vein, anti on through this vein is time chile car
tied to the itutgsm, anmd there, bmy its coiming inm contact
with ilhe atnmsphiere, is oinverted into bloued, anid
nowv ready for purposes of nutrition or tiourising time
body. From thme luntgs, it is (no0w being imaude inito
good blmod) brought back tim time heart a-.ain thrughm
large veins, anid fromi time heart setnt thtroughouit time
entire system thirottgh thme artifices.
Now time tmucus metmbratie which lines time stomach
and the bowels, also dips imi these limtle mouiths of time
vessels abiove sp'okcn of, anid also linies them. Aimd I
think now it cain be easily seen that when time diges
tive organs are in a congesuted anti inflimemd cummlition,
that there is more or less of a swollen state oif that
mucus membrtane, anid in conequence of time swolletn
state of the mettlmrae, time.miuthm of these vesself.(
Iroms their bmeinig som very iiimute, nxouldi be entirely
closed imp, which wotud of course prevent the - takinmg

up by thmese ves..s it is passed tin thironizh tihe howels
anti expelled, and without time system 'receivinig any
benefit of its tiourishting piropertics.
It 9s phmitn, then, frmom mihe fomrm-gmingn, tim-t our IRetme
dial measumres must he directetd to time ligesiv,-ormrans,
for it is byv time congestion of thmese that mhis shirunmken.

What shall lie onr renmedie. ? fThnse that will remo' e
