Mis. BrcE.-ln the village of -Kingstbn, N. J., a tavern was once kept bj a man named Byoe. Mrs Byce was a Tartar more acd worse, she a tao Tartars dohe up in one. She had been nuirsed in infancy by a wild cat, and fed'on vinegar ihen she took tothe spoon, and growing up with such a disposition i such sweet fare might be expected to.produce Poor Byee! the plague of his life;mas his vinegar fed.and.vinegar faced . His only refuge fo hiler tongue was his bar and his bottle;. he became his own. best customer, and managed to draw himself in his own liquor. His dis consolate widow soon had the pleasure of putting the sot under the clod, and of car rying on the business-at.the old stand.. The schoolmaster .of the village was an Irishman,- who whaled the boys in the day time but made love to the widow, and the widow's liquor in the'evening. She replied his advances towards herself, but made ad. vances toward him with the liquor, for his money was as good as anybody's. The colder she grew to MoShiney the deeper he drank and in the -course of the winter he often lost contrl of' his tongue, and his wit flowed out as the' whiskey ran in. - One evening he was gloriously high, and she was sourer than ever, which is saying something very. dreful of Mrs. Boyce, when he turn ed upon her with one of his most persuasive Irish smils'.and said: "And ah -.Mrs. Byee, I had such a dream about you and I-that's myself-last night, an, Idid. "Will, what was it, eh!" she snapped out in a way of her own, as if she would bite him if she was hungry. "And I dreamed-I did-that I died en. tirely and wont to the bad place." "Of course you did; where else would you got" "And I knocked at the door, and they said right out, "Who's there ?" and I an swered so bold like, It's Mister McShiney from Kingston, in the. Jerseys." You can't come ir." "'And why nOt ?" says!.-" We've got ore from there, and that's more than we can stand., She makes it two hot for all of us." " Who is it I" says I, and he said, " It's Mrs. Byce, the old tavern keeper's widow," and I waked up straight." Mrs. Byce never spoke. Her feelings were two big for utterance. With one hand she took the red hair of the Irishman and dragged him to the floor, and opened the door with the other, she sent him forth with such an energy of motion as forbade his re turn to that paradise again. LAYING Ecs.--A little incident occurred in a family grocery a day or two since, which, could the -eader have seen for him self, would have kept him in laughter for a week. A lean countryman entered the gro cery, having in his hand a small basket of eggs which he desired to exchange for sun dry housekeeping necessaries. " Want any eggs to-day, Mister I" "Yes, will take 'em; how many have yer got?" r - " Ten cents a dozen." 7" What!- elifften cents a dozen I" '%Yesj that'Ahi we get ourselves." "Wgell, the., all I've got to say is, it's a shamie." .'Wh s'ashame?" " W', look a-here, Mister," and here the -countryman patted the eggs affectionately, -aryd viewed them as though .they were the %eritable product of the giant's golden hen. ~" Why, look a-here. If you was a hen, , - wouldn't you think it was mighty hard times if you had to lay eggs for ten cents a dozen I" The expression of countenance, the sin cerity, the indignation, the evident opinion of the egg-raiser that the country would soon go to ruin at that rate, were inimitable ; and the merchant, appreciating it justly, "shelled out" eleven cents per dozen for the produce of the countryman's cacklers. I Don''r DANCE.-A plain, unlettered man came from the back country in the State of Alabama, to Tuscaloosa, and on the Sab bath went early to church, Hie had been accustomed to attend meetings in school houses and private dwellings, where each one appropriated to himself the first seat which he found unoccupied. He selected there a convenient slip, and awaited patient. ly the assembling of the congregation. The services commenced. Presently the music of a full toned organ burst upon his astonished ear-he had niever heard one be fore. At the same time the gentleman who owned the slip came up the aisle with his lady leaning on his arm. As he approached the door of the slip, h-e motioned for the countrymen to come out and give place to the lady. This movement the countryman did, not comprehend; and from the situation of the gentleman and lady, associated, as it was in his mind with the music, he immediately concluded that a co tillon or French contra dance was intended. Rising partly from his seat, he said to the gentleman who was still beckoning to him, " Excuse me, sir, excuse me, if you please; I don't dance !" A PECK OF TROUBL.-We pity the sub scribers to the WVayne County (Indiana) Journal. 'At the last account, the editor, publisher, and proprietor,, together with his wife and two children, were sick--the jour neyman was " on a batter ;" the devil was unruly and wicked, as all devils are from the old one down; the wood was all out; and the cow. hadn't come home. MusQUIToEs.--Let a man go to sleep with his head in a cast, iron kettle among " them critters," and their bills will make a watering pot of it before the next morning. I'x READY FOR ErruE.-James Knowles, of Point Judith, in the last war, lived in an exposed situation, near the ocean, and never went to bed without having his gun well charged by his side. One night there was a violent thunder gust which shook the house to its foundation : " Husband, husband," screamed the wife, "get up, the British have landed, or the day of judgment has come, and I don't know which." " By gosh," said Knowles, spring ing up, and seizing the musket, "I'm ready for either." Two Irishmen one day gunning, a large flock of pigeons came flying over their heads. Patrick elevated his piece and fireing, brought one of them to the ground. " Arrah!1" exclaimed his companion; what a fool are you to waste your ammunition, when the fall would have killed him!I" VAarLNTIs.-A vain man's motto is, " win gold md wear it"--a miser's " win gold andepare it"-.-a profiigate's ".win gold and spenda it"--a'broker's " win gold and lend it-a p wip gold, and end it"--a gam bier's 'ii geld and lose it"-a wise mans rUUsLISHn EVERY WDNE5DAY MORNING.
