.YFor tbe Advertiser.. M. EDITOR ; It is but ieldom inaeedibat I ever renderasy complaint against our Town authorities for non-attendance to their duty ; and in this in stance I should not be blamed for so doing. I de sire to call the attention ofthe'worthy Intendant and Wa3rdens of our Village to the wretched condition of the street leading from the Planters' Hotel to Beaver Dam Creek. Why, Mr. Editor, it is abso lulely bmninable. And, moreover, it is even dis tressing to one's pride in the appearance of his na tive Village and birthplace, to think that such rug ged and dangerous (when I say dangerous I mean what I say) side walks should be found within the limits of the corporation. If I were travelling in the wilds of Western Texas and should encounter a thoroughfare similar to the one of which I write, I might possibly not think strange of it; but Sir, here in civilized Carolina and enlightened Edgefield it is positively inexcusable. I hope, without further remarks, our Town Coun oil will give the above complaint their immediate attention. JA B. TEREE DAYS LATER FEOM EUROPE. ARRIVAL OF STEAMER ASIA. NEW YoRK, August 7. The steamer Asia has arrived, with Liverpool dates of the 27th ult. Cotton was firm at unchanged rates. Sales of the week 45,000 bales including 9:500 to speculators and exporters. Fair Orleans 7d; middling 6 5-16d; fair upland 6 5.8d; middling 6 1-8d. Flour had declined Gd. a is., and corn 6d. Pork active at 74s. a 84s. Gd. Lard 67 a 69s. Consols 95. The Spanish insurrection continues. Mr. Dallas has been furnished with full au thority to settle the entire Central American question, which will undoubtedly be satisfacto rily unjusted. FURTHER BY THE ASIA -Lord Palmerston stated in Parliament that there was no reason to believe Napoleon intended interfering in Spanish affitirs. The subject causes much uneasiness at Paris, but it was thought France would only interfere in case the Duchess of Montpensier becomes the next heir to the throne, or a Re public should be proclaimed, in which case a French army would invade Spain. Lucien Bonaparte had gone on a mission to Madrid. 'The National Guard had been almost entirely disarmed at Madrid, and numerous arrests made. At Barcelona the fighting lasted three days, the people fighting behind b:nriendes with determined courage. Twelve hundred dead were left in the streets. The troops, how ever, were successful at every point. The Gov ernment were sending all the available troops to the points of disturbance. Saragossa was now the headquarters of the insurgents, but would be bombarded. Thu latest advices say Espartero was still at Madrid, but O'Donnell had offered him his passports. N:avraez had been appointed Minister to Paris. All persons taken with arms will be executed. The London Advertiser says the American question is tirtually settled, and the fact will probably be announced on the prorogation of Parliament. The terms are that the Bay Is lands shall revert to Honduras, she pledging herself to maintain her sovgreighty over them. France also assents, and will sign the treaty ii necessary. - DISTIESsING ACCOUNTS FRoM TEXAS.-A let ter received by a gentleman in this city from his brother, dated Huntsville. Texas )uly 22J. gives the following distressing account of the drouth in that sectin of the State: "Our prolspects in this country are of the gloomiest chatracter. For twelve weeks nota drop of ratin has fallen within tell miles of thi place. Corn crops have failed entirely. Cotton is nearly gone. Dr. Tr., a plante-r near here, who expected to have raised 10,000 bushels 'of corn, told me to-day, that he shtould have to buy his bread for the ensuring year. He has cut down whole acres of corn mecrely for the tops and fodder. There are a number of planters who will not realize one peek oif corn to the acre. The grass is drying out, al.d the cattle are suffering to a grealt extentt. It is the topic in every collection of men, and a general coit sternation prevails throughout the country." WVASHIKGTON, Aug. 6. AFFAnR OF HoxoR.-A hostile meeting took place at noon tn-day, near the residence of Fran eis P. Blair, Maryland, between Roger A. Prior. Esq., of the Richmond Enquirer, and Mr. Ridg way, of the Whig. Thte distance was ten paces, and the weatpons pistols. After an exchang~e of shots, the affair was amicatbly adjusted, by the interference of Messrs. Brooks, Edmunsoin atnd Caskie, of the United States House of Repre sentatives, and mttal friends. THlE Pa-oRt AND RIDcr~war DUEL.-The[ WVashingtonl Union publishes the following card concerning the settlement of the nffair between Messrs. Pryor and Ridgeway. A CARP. Messrs. Ridgeway and11 Pryor, of Richmond, Va., met and exchanged shots without effect. We, the undersigned, who arrived on the ground after the fire, then interposed, and at our request the challenge was withdrawn. It aipearing to our satisfaction that the article of'Mr. Pryor, whtich was the occasion of thme chaillenge, was written under the belief that there wvas a studied purpose on the part of Mr. Ridgeway to insult him and provoke a quarrel, we recomntend that Mlr. Ridgeway diselaima such deliberate purpose, and that each and every article whtich was re garded ats offetnsive, either by Mr. P'ryor or Mr*. Ridgeway, be simnultaneously and frankly with drawn: and we trust that, hereafter, those rela tions of kindntess will subsist between themi which become gentlemen who have so well ap proved their courage a~nd honor. SIMPSION MATHIS, Adm'or. August... a t 30 Edgefield.:Collegiate, Institute FOR YOUNG LADIM. 0. A. Raymond, Principal Proprietor Sixty Pupils in attendance during the past year. W ILL commence its next Session, (the sixth Academical year under its present Principal,). on the 22d Sept. 1856. This Institution is peculiarly adapted to meet tha wants of those parents, who wish for their daughters a careful and thorough training in all the branches of a solid and polite education. Many parents prefer to place their daughters in a select circle of pupils, rather than among the crowded inmates of large institutions. To such this Seminary offers peculiar inducements, by its perfect adaptation to their wants. It furnishes all the advantages offered in the most extensive educational establishments. while it se cures at the same time a degree of careful and thorough training, hardly attainable under other cir cumstances. To aid in the instruction of the pupils, no expense has been spared in building and furnishing the in stitute. Its Maps, Charts, Cabinets, Chemical and Philosophical apparatus, and Pianos, have cost seve ral thousand dollars. These are regarded as helps in the work of education, and in the hands of in d ustrious and experienced teachers they are of great assistance. Their presence is also a sufficient guar antee, that on the part of the Teachers, there is a liberality of view and an earnestness of purpose, in the work of education without which success is never attainable. The great ends which are pro posed to be accomplished, demand the use of the best means, and these are liberally furnished. Five vears of prosperity and success sufficiently demonstrate that the claims which are made by the friends of this Institute, for its superiority in all that pertains to excellence, arc not without foundation. The following change will be made in the terms and general regulations for the coming year. 1st. The Academical year will be divided into two Sessions, (instead of three Sessions as formerly.) The first commencing on the 22d Sept.-the second on the 22d February. 2. All bills for Tuition, will be presented at the time of the pupil's entrance, and settlement will be expected, where the money is not convenient, by note, payable in 60 days from the time of entrance. Parents will thus know the exact amount of their bills, and the Teacher will be saved any future trouble in collection. The rates of Tuition under the new arrangement will be as follows : Academical Depart't, per session of 5 months$20,00 Collegiate " " " 25,00 OPTIONAL STUDIES. For which the charge is extra. Music Depart't., per session of five months, $27,00 French Language, 20,00 Drawing, 20.00 Oil Painting, 30,00 Extra Classes will be firmed for the study and practice of vocal music, inelud ng the singing of sacred music by note, at pr sess 3,00 Pupils using the Chem'cal and Philosophical ap paratus are charged each $3 a session for breakage, &c., and those practicing upon the Pianos at the Institute, pay $1,50 a scsion f.r keeping them in tune. There is also a charge upon all the pupils of 75 cents a Session for .ontingeneies. Pupils can enter at any time, and if near the middle or close of the session are charged but from the time of entrance. All such deductions how ever date from the close of the second week of that session. There will be a public Concert in December next, and an Examination before the parents in February, at the close of the Session. Aug6 tf 30 OURRYTON ACADEMIES.
