SLAvF EMANsCIPATION CAsE.-At New Orleans last week, a lady who owns twenty slaves and says that she feels desirous of emancipating, applied to the First District Court for perinission to set thein free, and allow them to renmain in the State. The jury in the ease could not agree. tIhus virtu. ally refusing to comply with the petition. 'The idea of the jurors was that there was too much of that sort of population now, and that they should be removed out of the State. STroNG IcE.-One of the heavy Cincinnati stean fire engines was taken over the Mississip pi river on the ice at St. Louis on the 21st uIt. A bold teamster of the city, named Meyer un dertook, fur $100, to haul it across with a team of five horses. He gave a bond of $8,000 to deliver, it safely at the warehouse of Lyon. Sivrob, and Co., in St. Louis, and accomplished thefeat. A skating society, composed of young people of b'! sexes, belonging to the first families of Spain, has be-en formed at Madrid. The fair members of- tis society have adopted a very pie. turesque costume for the occasion, 'onsisting of a Polish pelisse, trimined with a rich braid; a short kerseymere petticoat. plaid trowsers, small beaver lhat, with a plume of fearthers, and color ed morocco boots.
