last week, a lady who owns twenty slaves and says
that she feels desirous of emancipating, applied
to the First District Court for perinission to set
thein free, and allow them to renmain in the State.
The jury in the ease could not agree. tIhus virtu.
ally refusing to comply with the petition. 'The
idea of the jurors was that there was too much
of that sort of population now, and that they
should be removed out of the State.

stean fire engines was taken over the Mississip

A bold teamster of the city, named Meyer un
dertook, fur $100, to haul it across with a team
of five horses. He gave a bond of $8,000 to
