A GREAT STORM A5D' GREATER STORY. The following descriptiofn!of a hail storm and its terrible ravages, whieb recently took place in the neighborhood of Parysburg, South Car olina, is copied from the Southern Christian Ad. vocate, published at Charleston, and appears to be well authenticated: Mr. Editor:-t send you an account of a severe hail storm that passed through our neigh borhood about 2 o'clock on the 27th of May. The storm lasted 1ou fiOpe minutes as thick as rain ever fell. Some of the hail stones were as large as my hat! the most of them were the sise of fowls' eggs. My whole place was as white as ever I saw one after a snow storm. .The level ground was covered six inhes thick, and on the side of the pailings atd'Th'the corners aT the fence the hail was a foot deep. It beat'holes through the shingles of the Ienses. I thought it was the last day fbt verything out of doors. As soon as it .topped, L hastened to my pasture, expecting to tua every lring thing I bad in the world dead; te egt to my astonishment I only found one calf pd six hogs killed. One hog had its skull Sroke. We kave lost. all the poultry that was out, tad a dog was killed. Squirrels were knocked dead out of the tree tops, and dead birds can he *found over the fields. My whole crop is feat to pieces. The very bark of the trees was knocked off in patches the size of a dollar. The whole forest is trimmed wherever the hail struck. My neighbors north and south of me fared as badly as myself, but those east and west did not fare quite so bad. Such a storm, I think, was never seen before. Some-of your readers .may think this a tough tale; but it is out of -the power of pen, ink and paler, to paint the storm half as bad as it was. Nothing but ex perience of it can convey the :true idea. l am .compelled to plant my corn over, my oats are lost, and rice may come. The storm happened in the vicinity of Purys .burg lower part of St. Peter's Parish, South -Carolina. Jont P. RAYMoND. Purysburg, May 28, 1855. AOTHran DEFALCATIoN.-Another defalcation ihas occurred on the Eastern Railroad. It is .stated, says the Boston Transcript, that Tlhos. D. Dalton, formerly general freight agent of the road, is a defaulter in the sum of $5,386 60. We hear that this person was discharged from :the Boston and Maine Road for the reason that 'his accounts were not satisfactory, being short .of'about one hundred dollars. He was- at once -employed by the Eastern Railroad, from whom it now appears he took upwards of live thou sand dollars. MIssouRI SLAVERY CONVEN ION. - St. Iouis, .July 17.-The Convention of the friends of slavery in this State met at Lexington on the 12th. A large number of delegates were pres -ent,.and after a temporary organization, Senator .Ateljison and Col. Doniphan were called on to -address the Convention. They declined, how -ever, and other gentlemen addressed the meet. .ing, expressed themselves in favor of establish 'ing slavery in Kansas by all lawful means. 'The Convention having been permanently or -ganized by the choice of W. T. Wood as pre siding officer, resolutions were introduced re ,questing the Legislature of Missouri to pass -acts retaliatory upon and discriminating against the products of the. States of Massachusetts, Vermont, and Michigan. President Shannon. of the University, by invitation, delivered an address, setting forth the Scriptural arguments dn ivor of. slavery. The speeches wvere very 'ultra and inllammatory. Much excitement pre vitiled. Some propositions were strongly object.. .ed to, Thte Conventio.u was still sitting at last ~accounts... MERCIFU L PARDo.-The Marion Star says: ." We are authorized to state that thIs Excel 'lency the~G'svernor hasbeen induced, solely on the ground of hiumanity, to relea~we Benj. Shoo ter from his'nnexpired imprisonment. The fol lowing practicing physicians of Marion village; Drs. Mc ueen, Campbell, Mulhins and Single tary, have certified to the G~overnor that his longer confinement, would in all human proba bility, result fiaty. It is duo to the Governor to state that he has .discovered nothing in the ease, nor-m the representation of his friends, to warrant his interference with the just sentence of the court. He has consented to exercise the pardoning powver to) save life, in a case where the forfeiture of life was not the penalty." His strict integrity and gentlemanl deportment made him many warm and sincee friends, who deeply sympathise with his family i their loss. As an evidence of his devotion to the State zin District that gave him birth, his youngest child, boy, born some forty hours before his death, e brought to him to see it, (the morning previous t his decease,) says he, " It is all right-it is a boy its name is Tuoxas EDGEFIELD, in honor of my na tive District."
