73M PRESENT AT 3MUNT VEROf. The President of. the United. States and his family made a first pilgrimage to.the tomb of Washington on Frida, In the steamer Collyer, under the command of Capt. Gedney. It, was the usual day of the steamer for Mount Vernon, but President Pierce, in his republican manner, came unannounced and unexpected; Captain Gedney, however. was not to be outdone. He determined to make the day as full of pleasing incidents as possible, and he succeeded admira bly. When the steamer arrived at the " White House" the distinguished company were just in tiue to witness an exciting haul of the seine, in which over a thousand shad, six thousand herring, and two immense sturgeons, with a rockfish weighing nearly forty pounds, were caught. 'T he " White House" is a historical place, known in the annals of the last war with the ritish. It adjoins Moun*Vernon estate, and with its 200 acres and valuable fishing landing belongs to Mr. Otterback. He has refused $65,000 for the place. It cost him $40,000. The rental of the fishing landing alone pays him $2,700 a year. At Mount Vernon the President was hand. somely received by Mr. John A. Washington, 'the youthful but dese-ving proprietor of the 'honored residence of the Father of his Country. The private rooms were cheerfully thrown open ,to the family of him who now fills the chair :ocupied by the immortal Washington. A lbeautiful bouquet from the garden of Washing ;ton was presented to Mrs. Pierce by Captain Gedney. A visit to the new and the old or first tomb was paid, and the company were again assem bled on the decks of the Colleyr, homeward bound, in as bright a sunshine and as delicious a day as man should ever wish for. Fort Wash ington, on the Maryland side of ilhe Potomac, claimed the attention of the company, but an entrance was not effected until Capt. Gedney .(following up his kind attentions of the day) .atpprised the non-commissioned officer in coml unand that the commander-in-chief of the armies ,of the United States was present. Inside the .fortification a white-haired veteran tendered his .respects to the President, and, in reply to a -question of how m.ny soldiers he had under him here to keep the fort al.d grounds in order, .he stated to the President he was there solitary and alone, a sergeant of twenty-six years' stand ing. MR. BucuAsi.-'he American Minister peaking at a meeting of the members of the -Star Club on Wednesday, said that in India England continued making conquests until she had at length succeeded in subjugating a popu .lation of 150,000,0o0 to her away; and yet when Brother Jonathan attempted to Wake a small acqui..,ition in an honest manner, all Eng. Jand denounced his conduct inl the most indig ant, termis-[laughter.] That was their uni fow experience. There was an old proverb which said that " As the old cock crows the young cock learns;" but England would not suffer the "young cock" to learn at all, or to wtake any progress in imitation of his ancestors. DEATH OF JUDGE CoLQUITT.-The telegraph annowuces the death, at Macon, Saturday, of the H o. Walter T. Co!quit. Mr. Colquitt has long sustaitied a di.linguished position in the ate w orgia and the Union. He first be came distinguished at the bar, where, as an ad voeate. parucularly in criminal cases, lie has seidoma had all equal, and passing through im portint ofices in the State, Ie was at length, in 1d43. 1nownued with a seAt in the Senate of the United States. ie was a zealous member of the Medhodist Church, and by his fervant elo quence did much for ihe cause of religion and tile spread of that denomination throughout the State. WE learn from the Richmond Dispatch that the Executive Conimittee of the Virginia State Agricultural Society, which has just adjourned, after a laborious session of three days, has offer ed a premium of one thousand dollars, one halfl out of the funids of the Society, and one half by individual contribution, on tile part of several of the members, fort the discovery and stcess ful use of some eflicient, practicable and gener-? ally available plan for preventing tile depreda tions of thle joinlt wortm. Tua olijve lha been culnivated for many years in parts of Florida and Califortiia ; antd, w ith a view to extend the culture, the Agriecunral llu reau at WVashington, having receive-d cuttings of the plant tromu Franee, is distributing them throughout the Southern States. A few days since a man crossed tho M is-sis sippi at the town of Chester, Ill., by swimming for the sake of saving five cents ferriage! What did he gain by it! He lost one boot and spoiled a pair oft horse pistols! Mean men sel dom become rich. To save a " pistareen," they are continually jeopardizing their "'quarters." If you want to be troubled with doubloons, bL. moderately generous. THE latest folly enjoined by the goddess of fa'shion upon her abject devotees, the ladies of New York,. is the wearing of boninet ribands four feet long. The bonnets, meanwhile, con tinue to recede from public observation. They hare long been invisible to the naked eye of the wearer; and they now threaten to -run entirely to riband. AN Irishman, taken mtaensible from the ruins of a recent railroad smash-up near Dunkirk, N. Y., after waking to consciousness, said :-" By the powers! an' wasn't it, a Know-Nothing, I was for a few moments gintlemnen T" " LovEtr WVoMA."-There is a woman in Cincininatti, says the Times, who keeps a grnee ry, attends faithfully to a fazt pair of twins, does her own house-work, and yet finds time to give her lazy husband a sound thrashing three or four times a week. FLOUn AND WHEAT AT MitLWAUKIIE.-TheO Sentinel says there is now at \thiis place, ready to go forwaird, '70,000 bbls. of Flour and 530, 00 bushels of~ Wheat. This includes the quantity shipped during the past week.. O BIT UA RY. DIED 30th April, 1855, Mirs. ELIZABETHi, wife of Capt. -lou~s P. QUA-rrLEDLIK, and daughter of GEroaE and SARAH Jonssos, in the 45th year of her age. She joined the Miethodist E. Church in 1842 under the preachi~ng of thme Rev. Samuel Dunwoody, and lived a constant member until death. She at tended church out seldom during the last twelve years of her life, owitng to the precarious state of her heahih. She was contined to her bed five days with congestion of the nerves. Towards heCr last sflnments she called her hlusband to her bedside, and alter committing her children to his care and the protection of her [Heavetnly Father she shouted glory to God' iu the highest. 'She took each one of her chilren by the- hand atnd bid them fatrewell, and toid $hemn all that they muast meet her in heaven, b far," said she, " I feallik I ain going there." Being asked by her eldest bi-other, (Win. John son) if her prospect for the other world was clear, she auswered in the affirmative, I' that there is no cloud or darkness in the way, and I shalt soon be in heaven, where I will be done with .the troubles of thlm world." ,.She was rational to the last,.and died without a sitruggle or a groan. As a conipamion she was to her bereft husband all that could tend to ,qie hmao ,lappy; as a mother kitnd and affectioate. ta~ bas'eft a husband and six children, a mother )Gyelds old, brythers, sisters, friends and neighbors to mourn their Joss.
