Wheat Culture.
This department of agriculture is becon
ing daily one of greater importance to ti
Southern farmer. It is a fact now indispi
table, that Southern flour is more nutritiotL
than Northern, and many pe-ople are begin
ning to find out that wheat can be growl
even in a cotton growing country, with pr<
fit. The vast. flicilities which are evers
'where being opened now-a-days, by Ra
Roads, will enable the farner of' the interic
to find a market in the cities which now dl
pend upon the North, while the increase c
manulactures, which always follow in th
wake of improvement, will create new de
mands, always increasing. What, then, i
to hinder us from becomins a great bread
producing people-particularly those whi
live a little above the cotton belt. We hav,
plenty of land well adapted to the purpos
-our cotton seed furnishes the best an<
cheapest ianure that can be had for wheat
and onr climate is admirably adipted to it
All that is necessary is to take a little mon
pains inl looking up the varieties adaptet
best to soil and climate, to plow deeper, pre
pare more thoroughly, put down the cottor
seed regularly, sow plenty of good seed
plow it in well, and brush or roll it ovel
nicelv.
Just here we are brought to a halt by the
reflection that, although all men may :Igree
to the correctness of the above remarks, still
the great bone of contention is wehen to sow,
and wthether the time of sowing has any thing
to (in in removing the two greatest ob-tacles
in the production of wheat-the Ihessian tly
and late frosts.
In looking over the Patent Office Reports
en agriculture for ISZM-3, we were struck
With the reia rkable coi incidencC of' opinion,
that Lite sowing :was the surest preventive
of the Iessian fly. But two coitra opiniis
were offered, one for early sowigr antd the
other early sowing afrr co/fon. The C!e:m
culture of cotton doubtless has much to do
with the exemption of cott'ion lbuad from the
fly. In grassy and weedy lands they most
do congregate, increase and multiply. It is
evident that there must be some good reason
for this agreemeit among firiners over ie
whole inion, that late sowinig is the safest
course-what is it ? In a climate like ours,
it may be presumed that an insect which is
hatched out in from four to fifteen days, can
prop:igrate its species to an alarming extent
during September, October and November.
As we rarely have a freeze hard enough to
kill the eggs or drive off these pests before
December, all wheat coming up during the
warm days of September, October and No.
vember, certainly stands a fir cbance to lie
well stocked with the Hessian, which is in
full feather during that period. Thorough
preparation of the soil, good Inaniurin and
late sowing, (after freezes,) would seem to
be the safest course. At all events, von
stand a chance to escaipe the~ fill broiid,'andi
if' your wheat is well advaniced in the spring
hatching canniot do you imneh doinag.e.
There is no chance to diodge his vernal visit<.
Anid here we are heset by the other dithi
culty: if your wheat he stroing anud huxurianit
in the springm, tmt big frost aboiut Eatster,
wvhich our old Dtcth fatrmners have kept as a
sort of' buggerboo fir us since our earliest
recllectiun, (antd by the wayv, he's not to be
laugh.ed at,) may nip our hiipes. Then wvlit
must lie done to meet this ditdicuilty' ? We
know hut one remedy: chose pasituraige with
small stock-sheep, calves aind cults. We
do not mean dow'nright grazing one's whea:t
into the earth, hut keepiing just stock enioigh
on it (in dry, i'eal/her onlyi,.) as will keep it
niicely clipped over unitil the 1st .\arch.
It has been argued ny some that early
sowing, with close pa~storatge, would siv'e
the cropi from the fly iad front both, bot it
has not been our expierience.
But-there is anth~ter drawbiack we hadi
almost forgotton, simpilv, we suppose, lie
cause we had foiunil a remned y-rmst. Thlis
can eaisily he avouided by son inig early v'n ie
ties of wheat. " Lame wheat will not do'," i
seems to be a commo1 n oipii on, andit eailv tI
wheat can be kept back out of' frost's wayvt
by proper grazing- there is no dioubt of' that.
WVe knowv fields that wvere grazed till 1st .
March, that now bid fair to atverage - tein
bushels per aere, while oithers in sight 'whieb'
had much the better wheat biefore the froste
will not average live, unider the most favora-:
ble circtumstances. It is not an isolated cazse. a
We wvould like to have this questi->n dis. C
cussed in the N"outern .4griculturist, amid
have the opinions of wvell knowvn succes'id a
and unisuccessfully wheat growers upon the ai
subject. A little discussion could do no
harm, and sonme grainis of' wheatt might be
got out of the pile of' cha [f at all events.

It Is a remarkable flirt, that among Uhe hundreds of
eminent phyesicians who have exained the recipe hy which
Bull s Sarsaparilla is preparedl, not one lhas enndemnedt
it. but atl approved it, and commend it in the highest
terms. Many physicians express thmemselve.s strongty In
thme btief that it is decidedly thu best preparation of Sar

Although there are many physirians whc feel a rehuctance
to havineg their narne-i andned to the reenmrriendation of
any parricular remiedy-. not withstanding tiey may approve
of it in the imihest degree, there are others viho fratnkly
'Ild thirupor in favor of a rine-y which they know
capabs of dong so much good in an attlicted com

respeertable phyvmeiaos, of high standing in the commnunity
in whlih they live:

I have examined the~ prescrip: inn fr the preseiarion of
