We wish our fellow.citizens who are interested in this project much joy, on the for nation of their company, and trust their road will prove a great, useful and profitable one. Now we want to know why the one we tell of helow, in the relation it bears to the pumtkin of the " Press," is like the hottest season of thme year !-Give it up!I Why, simply because it's "somc.cr (summer.) Tho Revolt in China Is progressing, arid aecordintg ho the last accounts the revolutionists are earrying every thing before Our-Plank Roads. WE have now in Edgefield one Plank Road eome ploted, twenty-six miles long, besides a five mile braneit-another -in rapid progress, some ten and a half miles in length-and a third, fur which the books woill be opened early in January next, to exte id fronr this place to lticlhardsonville on the Saluda side or the District, a distance of seventeen or eighteen miles. There is still another road of the kind which we believe is agreed upon, to lead from Hamburg out in the direction of Barnwell; but we are not prepared to speak with entire confidence as to its probable advancement. We take it for granted however from what has been done in the matter, tiat it will be suc cessfully carried out. The first of our Plank Roads is the " Hamburg and Edgefield Road." It has been completed at a cost of about fifty tiorsand dollars. And, although it cannot be claimed to be a well-built road, it has certainly subserved a most useful purpose to the public general. ly, yieleling at the same time a very handsome divi dend to its Stockholders, to wit, from twelve to four teen per cent. Its profits are rather on the increase, and we understand it is the object of the Company to apply a considerable part thereof to the perfecting of their road until it shall beciome as good as a road of the sort can be made. This they can easily afford and still enjoy an annual dividend of at least twelve per cent. Our second work of the kind is the Edgefield and Cheatham Plank Road, leading on from this place to wards Abbeville. This road has been commenced and, under the continual and close attention of the President of the Company, is being hurried on in a tmanner de cidedly cheering to all interested in its speedy comple tion. A mile and a halfof it will be finished by Christ mas; and should nothing unforeseen occur to retard the hrisknaess with which it has been commenced, we shall expect to see a fine Plank Road, from our town to Cheatham's, opened out and out to public travel' some time before another Christmas shall come around. That this road will also pay well', there cannot be a shadow of doubt. Next after the Edgeield ind Cheatham Road, comes I the one leading from Edgefield C. i. to Richardson ville. Ihis not expected that this road will he com menced before February or 3Iarch next. We learn with much pleasure that great interest ii felt in the projec t by the intelligent planters along its line; and we are far from entertaining a doubt but that they will be found ready, every man of them, to place such a mus opposite their names upon the supscription books of the new Company as will ensure its establishment. Yet it is not only the Planters iong the line of this road, but those too who are interested in the prosperity of Edgefield village and the town of Hamburg, who should step forward to aid liberally this enter-rise. And especially should the people of Hamburg, if we may be permitted the suggestion, strain every nerve C to secure the bertefits which must accrue to her from this extension of Plank Road facilities. We hazard but little (as it seems to us) in saying that this satne Richardson Road will result in doing her more real good thaun the Savannah River Railroad itself. Let her be watchful then to prevent the possibility of a failure in any of the Plank Road enterprises which tend to her as their market terminus. Let her encourage them by every means in her power and Iamburg may yet see the day when her prosperity slall much more than double what it has ever been. But neither are theciti. zens of Edgefield and of Hatburg the only others who should feel a keen desire for the rapid progress of these Plank road extensions. There is another interest tnore materially to be benefitted, perhaps, titan any yet mentioned : we mean the Edgerield and Hamburg Plank Road Company. By as ntuch as the upper roads attract travel, just by so much will the value of the stock of this last naned company be y enhanced. Anal if that stock is valuable now, how t much more so will it be when these roads, which converge at the aforesaid Company's upper termints, C shall get inato full operation. It verily seemetha tm tus that then, there will be nao more desirable stock in I thec United States than that whickh belongs to the I stock-holers in the Edlgefield and Hlamhurg Plank Road. Sutch being the prospect, it is unquiesionably he part of pruahetnce for this Compnny to lise iao. opportuntity of helping alotng all projects nA hia-l will :grwamly be the consatant feeders of their road. And I we shall confidently rely upon their doing much ini he good cause of plank-roadinig our District. Thaus will it be seen that Old Edgefield, if behind any other Districts of Souath Carolhna in granmd ~ [ailroad undertakings, is ahead of thiems all corn ined ini the more unipretending and less expensive,v et nao Ie's useful business of Plai~k Roiads. We trustr hat the spirit of improvement (which has appearedc mong us in this seemingly hummble garb) will ntot bep mflrd to languish. It may be, thmat while othere ections are setting tip hitgh-soundaig claims to lacing I, agific.:ntly progresive, we shall afier all bee tdjdged to have chosen that better part which shall I tiot be taken away fram us. We cannot close these observations without adl erting to a point which has more thtan aonce occumrred o us of late. It is the praopriety of omt diflerent Plank Raoad conmanties working together htarmnonaious ly. Of the three we have beeni conisiderinag aboave, he first is the parent stenm while the two last are to e its branches. Between the trunk atid its branch here should be no adis-crepanc-y. Let the onte act owardls the tither fairly atad generotusly in all things n this way will the wAelfare of both be most directly romoted. To begin this work of recipirocal kindnlaess -mI good-feeling, we have a propositiotn to make ton he stock-hmolders respectively in the Eilgerfieldl anal Iamburg, and the Edlgefieldl anal Chaeatham Plankt Road Companies. ,We obaserve that tho road of the I fomaer Company has nearly onie mile at its upper terminus of little or no valtie. Th'lis is where the I ofTset was taken on the Long Cane road for the putr pose of reaching the corporate littits of our townt, te adirect way having beeni given up on account of s-me dlificulties, of which we care not now to speak. Thle Eaigefield anal Cheathiam Plank Road Comnpany have succeeded in locating on the direct route, which te oldher company failed to obtain, anad have thtus joined the older road nearly a mile from its terminus. Those readers, who are interested in what we are upon, will understatnd without further parley, that this mile is almost host to the lower Company. Now what we propose is this: let the tapper Companiy agree to take the lumber on this mile of road at a fair: valuation anal thus to some extent relieve thae lower Company from the predicament in which they are placed. This will be no injury to the Edgefield and Ceatham Company, while it w ill be an act of kind. ness towards a sister corporation sa licha will tend to promte a cordiality of itntercourse anal a reciprocity of benefits that may tell hereafter for the best in terests of all concerned. Should this proposition be considered good, we hope it will be agreed uponi and then, after the lo. er comn pany's charter shall have been amended so as to make the point of junction their terminus, all will be strait. War News. By reference to several items in another part of ou present issue, it will be seen that the war between Russia and Turkey is begining to assume a very serious aspect. We have been with thoase who thought that the great commercial interests of the world forbade the idea of any thing like a regular war growing out of this difficulty. But it rather appears ast present that we have "recktoned without our host" in- thme pr-emises. A dangertous feature in the engagements which have taken place is thtat the 'rarks are thus far the victors, The pride of Russia may he excited by this untoward issue of her army's efforts, and the power of her Czar may be brought to bear in its fullest extent to wipe omit the stain tupona ier escutcheon. If so, blood wAill yet flow in torrents sul'icietnt to satisfy the most rapacious eormoratits of the Eastern Empire. The goveraiments of earth wtill feel the effectsa of this terrible strife, if once fairly opeed. Bat we ineline to the opinion that it cannot extenad at farthest beyond the conqauest of the P'rincY palities by Russia, whieh enid can be achsieved in a few monthas. 'Thle latest intelligence is that negutiations for peace arc still being attempted, and possibly they muay yet prove successful.
