BREEUDA GRAMl..
Passing the house of a friend, not lorg
since, we observed his hogs were in better
order than those of rmost of our neighbcrs
at this time of nnpr/cedented scarcity of
grain. On enquiring- into the cause, he ii.
formed i t'i. t he had given them but v ry
little c6rn-thakt he- had a B. rmu la grass
pitch which he- occasionally plo .ved up, and
on the roots of which his twgs kept in the
order we saw them.
Would it not be well for each farmer to
have a field, according to the size of this
sto2k, set in this (hy many condemned and
much abused) excellent grass, and kept
apart from his cultivated fields proposely for
his hogs in tie winter, and for other stc ci in
the summer? We have seen enough writ
ten on the subject, to know that many will
be horrified at the very suggestion of intro
ducing it on to any part of a farm. But we
can assure such, that a very narrow strip of
woodland, and. even some such fence-rows
as- are- not by any means unusual to be
seen in this country, will effectually stop its
creeping progress. Keep a border of woods,
or such a fence-row around it, and be care
ful to clean your plow well before leaving
the field, and we will obligate to extermi
nate all that leafs its circum-scribed bounds.
It matures no see;bhence it cannot be seat
tered in the excrements of cattle, as is not
unfrequently the case with nther grasses.
If our farmers and plantbrs intend d
raisi ig their own hogs and other stock, as
every one should do even if he produces less
cotton, instead of buying from Tennessee
and Kentucky, at the most extravagant pri
ces when we are least able to pay them, it
is high time we were turning our attention
tot some auxiliary to the corn crop. The
pea, sweet potato, and turnip-the clover,
and grasses, should each one occupy its
rliace on the farm. Of the- pea we can
i aise with our cornt great abundance, year
lvto fatten-our pork iii the fall And if we
plant' the bick or tory varieties to carry
our stock hogs pretty well through the win
ter. Some are opposed to giving stock hogs
peas--believing they will cause the hogs to
die the next summer. We believe it is rath
er from poverty than the offects of peas that
they die. Fatten a hog on corn in the fall'
or winter, and allow him to become poor in
the summer,.and he is more apt to die than
one that has been kept lean all the time.
But if we fear the effects of the pea, we
might successfully cultivate the sweet pota
to, which is believed by nimny to afford more
food on the same space of land, than can be
made in any other crop. We know from
experience, that with a small addition of
corn, hogs fatten kindly on .them, and that
the meat is sweeter and more juicy than
when fed on corn alone.
Rye, barley, clover and grass lots for
winter and spring grazing, and early cut
ting, in case ,i great scarcity of grain and
fodder, every-&ne may have- with the least
care and att6ntion, that can afford to come
out of the cotton field to. prepare-for them.
Horses and cattle cannot live on cotton
stalks,.nDor can negroes on the seed.
Farmer & Planter.
GUANO.
We publish the result of some experi
medis-in the use of Guano by Mr. S. MI.
Ste Ienson, of Marion, -which we. copy
from~he:Star:
I'planted ont good cotton land the rows,
four feit wi-de; I applied Guano to eanch al
ternate rowv at the rate of about 200 lbs.
per aere, learing the remaining rowvs wvith.
out mnanure. This furnished an oppartuni
ty to ascevtain precisely the increase pro
duction.s1 picked one -row of the ungu
anoed cotton, it yielded 18 hbs. seed cot
ton. I alsopicked one row of the Guanoed
cotton, imnnssiately by the side of the above
rowv, and it yielded 32 R's. seed cottun.
Thesa rowvs bdinng 4 feet wide, of course it
tiok 52 rows to make an acre, which being
multiplied by the above productions will show
that the land without guano produced 936
lbs. per acre, and with guano it produced
1664 lbs. per acre, being an increase per
nere of 728 lbs., or about 65 per cent. The
increase production, 728 lbs., at $5,50 per
cwt., is worth abont $18; deduct $6, the
cost of the guano applied, and it leaves $12
clear pro'it per acre.
I app'iadl on my plantation several tons
of guano. I found the result on all good
lively cotton lands about equal to the above;
but where it was put on old, thin, wvorn,
light lands, aund nothing mixed w~ith it,
found it did but lihtle good-not enoughn, I
apprehend, to pay for the guano. Dead,
poor light, old lands must have something
besides guano. I think, however, if- rich
earth, or surface as we generally call it, was
placed in the furrow with the guano, on
such lands, it would pay very wvell. I think
it would do well on the land if new ; but
after the land gets old worn and washed,
surface must be put with thne guano or it
will not pay.
There are many planters in this immedi
ate vicinity, who tested this manure last
year, have none of them sufficient interest
in the progress of scientific agriculture to
give the public the benefit of their experi
ence.
To MANAGE A REARING HoRsE.--In the
British Sportsman, we find thne followving
hint respecting the management of a rear
ing horse, which strikes us as being worthy,
as it is easy of trial.
Whenever you perceive a horse's inclina
tion to rear, separate your reins and pre
pare for him. The instant he is about to
rise, slacken one hand, and bend or twist
his head with the other, keeping your hands
lowv. This bendinjg compels him to move a
hind leg, and of necessity brings his fore
feet down. Instantly twvist him completely
-round two or three times, wvhich wsill con
fuse him very much, and completely throw
him off his guard. The moment you have
fnished twisting him round, place his head
ii the direction you wvish to proceed, apply
t'ie spurs, he will not fail to go forward ; if
thie situation be convenient, press him into
a gallop, and apply the spurs and wvhip twvo
or three times severely. The horse will
not, perhaps, be quite satisfied with the first
defeat, but may feel disposed to - try again
for the mastery.
Should this be the case, you have only
to twist hnim, &c., as before, and you w-ill
find that in the second struggle lhe wvill be
much more easily subdued than on the for
wier occasion, in fact you wih perceive him
quail under the operation. It rarely hap
pens that a rearing horse, after. having been
treated in the way described,. will resort to
his trick a third time.
AC-rION AND Ru-Ac-rION IN FARXING.
Fences operate ini two ways-ir good, they
are a defence, if poor an .offence.
Many a farmer, by too sparingly seeding
hris ne w meadows, has had to cede his whole
farm.
Every farmer should see daily every ani
ua-, he hna and inspect its conditin
Weekly visits, as with some, soon result in
weakly animals.
The man who provides vell sheltered
cotes for his sheep in winter, will soon find
plenty or coats for his own back.
A good housewife should not be a per
sin of "one idea," but should be equally
faniliar with flower garden and flower bar
rel; and though the lesson should be to les
s -n expense, yet the scent of the rose should
n it be valued more than the cent in the till.
If her husband is a skilful sower of grain,
she is equally skilful as a sewer of garments
-he keeps his hoes bright by use, she keeps
tie hose of the whole family in order.-Al
bany Cultivator.
SMOKING BACoN.- As this is the season
for the performance of this indispensable
operation, we clip the following recipe from
the Missississippi independent, of which we
have a very favorable opinion:
"A friend of ours who never fails to
make the finest of bacon, makes a paste of
finely-ground pepper and lard, which he ap.
plies with a brush to the flesh surface of
each piece upon hanging it to smoke. A
pound of pepper is sufficient for ten or a
dozen pieces. He has found it an infallible
preventive of injury from flies."
