THE JARKER'S BOY. TnE sun had gone down behind yon hill And o'er the dreary moor, When weary and lame a boy there came Up to a Farmer's door, Saying.can you tell me if any there be Can give tu me employ, For to plough or to hoe, For to reap- or to- sow, Or to be a Farmer's boy. Mly father's (lead and' my mother's left With her five children small; An.d what is worse for mother yet, Pin the eldest of them all: 'fhough young I am, I fear no work, If you will me employ, For to plough and to hoe, &o. I- you can give me no employ One favor more I ask, 'that is to shelter me this night From the cold and wintry blast; At the break of day I'll trudge away Elsewhere to seek employ, For to plough and to hoe, &e, The Father sad *e'll try the lad, No father let l-ii seek, Oh, yes, dear ,ather, the daugker eried, While the tears roll'd down ier efieeks, For him that )al ors its hard to want, Or elsewhere seek employ, For to plough or to hoe, &e. At length, of years, the boy grew up, And the good old Fariner diedi, And left the boy the farm he had And the daughter for his bride, The boy that was is a farmer now, And oftentimes thinks with joy, Oi that happy happy day. When he first came that way For to be a farmer's boy. HOW TO MA KANU t tho- frol1owig statement is given by a Hampshire County, Massachusetts, farimer, in the report of the Agricultural Society of that County on the best method of making a-highly fertilizing and cheap compost mu "Immedibtel!V after plantiig in the spring and after I have used the manure I want, I commune my compost heap for the next season: Into a convenient place, which is a lbIlow in the angle of the bank wnll, on the South end of my buildings, I deposit first a load of horse manure. Over this I usually spread the scrapings of my wood and cellar, especially in May, and all other substances that will make manure, that I find about my buildings, such as the raking. of the yard, old leaves, &c., making iii all another snmll lon, dien over the whole spread about a bushel oi ashes. For the next three or four weeks this heap receives from the washroom, all the soap suds and washing water, and from the house, all the useless slops and wnshing of the kitchen, sweepings, &c., he ing kept contimually mist.- In about four Weeles attet- the first deposif,-I add another load of horse imnare; more lbonyand sand from the washingrof road: drains spread over the horse amuure, and over all a layer of wcood ashes occasionally adding more-du ring the next four weeks. Tihis heap, for the sueceeding four weeks, receives as be -fore, all the fertilizing substances that aeu mahse iii the wvaalhtoom and kitchen. This process is continued during the Summer and Fall, until snaow covers the ground, and then I call my heap finished, only it continues to receive, during theo Winter, washings, slops, &c. I claim for this manure the following ad vantages: First, it is cheap. H orse manure alone is a miserable fertilizer, and this ex cept the wood ashes, is the only substance of any value that enters the comnposition. Comibibed ini the way stated, it helps to form a valuabfe mamnut-e. Agaiw; as at mutter of cleanliness aind-onvenience, this compost heap is of great advantage. How often do we see about farm yards, accumulations of substances rendelring the premises filthy and ensightly. The compost heap receives all these otherwise useless accunmuhttions." OLD PLASTEE. It is not perhape generally known that old plast'er from the Wvalls of old build'ags. is oiio of the best manures that can he-applied to apple trees which have become decayed from age and its consequences, disease'. If the soil about the roots of an old apple, be removed to thme depth of a foot, and over a circle of eight or ninmo feet in diameter, and old plaster filled in, say eight or ten bushels to a tree, and the whole covered up and kept free from weeds and grass the tree so treat ed will, in nine cases out of ten rsvive, and manifest almost as much vigor as in its youth. ful days. And if furthermore to the benefits resulting from this application, we add those of pruning, and scraping the bark, and wash ing down with a water made of ashes (or hey) the health will be fully restored, and grafts in the trees wvill succeed as well as if placed in the limbs of the youngest and most thrifty trees in the orchard. Trhere is a principle in old lime, which renders it par. ticularly valuable for this use, and which wherever its virtues are understood, will al ways secure it from being throwvn into the ditch. It is also an excellent ingredient in compost heaps, and for placing rouiid young fruit trees. Lic, oy CATmE.-Mr. Editor :--It is not often that I have it in my power to offer anything to the public; but I think it right, that each one of us should give to all the benefit of his experience. I saw ini some agricultural work, perhaps your own, that the water in which Irish po tatoes had been boiled, if applied to cows, &c., wvould kill lice upon them. I tried it several times wvith signal success, and a few days ago, ordered my boy to try it upon my cowvs, which, at this time of the year, gene. rally are full of ticks; the result of whlch is, that they have all taken their departure. Please publish this for the benefit of all the comns1 going cows of the vicinity of our city.-Southern Planter.I To PURGE A Ho~tsE.-Reduce a piece of chalk the size of' a walnut to powder, a'nd put it in a quart bottle. It generally operates in five minutes, and af fords almost instantaneous and complete re- - lief. EzszrrrFox CURRwIo Cowse-The late-eminent Dr. Benjamin Rush, in a lec dare upon the advantage of studying the diseases of domestic animals, states that thee is an improvement in the quality of th-e milk, and an nrease of its quantity, ob talied by currying the cow. How few cows there are in our country that ever felt a curmycoh or brush t TO HAVE A GoOD HOSE. It is not sufficient to have a good colt, the product of a superior mare, with a stal lion of good blood and established reputa tion. This is necessary, but it is not all that is necessary. A most promising colt, that attracts universal 4diniration while it follows the mare, may be grown into an almost worthless horse. How, then, having a good beginning, shall ie grow a good horse-for good horses alone are profitable to raise I By exercising the greatest care in their management until they have ceased to be colts. Many ruin, almost, a colt the first winter by starvation-by turning it into the yard to run with the young cattle, to pick up a scanty nourishment, and that of the cheapest and coarsest food. There is, on the other hand, no one season of its life when care, and good and full feeding of appropriate food, will tell so much for good as this same first winter. A friend who, for now many years, has annually sold two or three young horses at the highest market prices, has often assured us that at no time in the life of his colts did he take so good care of them and feed them better than during their first winter; and that by the effect produced upon them the first year he could tell what kind of horses they would become. There is something so absurd in scanting the supply of nourishment to a young growing animal! Some fancy that such a course will render the animal hardy. The only effect produced upon the growing animal by an insufficient nutrition, is to hinder his best development. Wait until he has attained his growth, and then stint him, if you choose. It can be done then with less injury. Colts are often put to hard work at too Young an age. It not frequently happens that you see a horse of five years with all the wear and tear of ten in his appearance. This should never be. The exercise of the same judgment in the tanagement of colts most used towards children, would prevent this. Colts should be put to exercise and train ing at an early age, and may do light labor to advantage, but to put upon four years the labor proper only for six or seven years, has been the ruin of many a promising ani mnal. There are other suggestions that occur properly in this connection, but we will omit then, considering the tovo men tioned above as the most important. Granite Farmer. Executive Department.
