I watch their minds expanding, With fond and earnest hope, Like fragrant little blossoms - Whose petals daily ope. What dew is to the flowers, The rainbow to the sky, Are these children to my pathway, Which they cheer and beautify. They fill my heart with gladness, With thankfulness and praise,. They chase away my sadness, And leave no gloomy days. Though many other blessings Around my footsteps fall, My children and their v' Are el' A God Mi 0 ma Thr .aer early youth, To lean them in the pathway Of honor and of truth. God grant to me Ilis spirit, To guide their souls aright, To teach them by example n...~sin his sigh, And -when this life is ended, May all whom le has givcn United, form a family Within the courts of Heaven. FAMY GOVERIIENT. BY REV. RALPH W. ALLEN. On the - correct formation of character hangs all which is dear to the human race It is true, that the teacher and examph have much to do in its formation, but thes< fall far below parental training in this di recting and moulding influence. Indeed the potency for good of the teacher, is in i great measure secured by a well sustained family discipline. In most. instances, it may be undeniably affirmed that, the foundation of character for subsequent life, is laid under parental influehce, for here the elements of character are imbibed, whether good or evil. And is . that government to bo lightly esteemed un der which character is to receive its con. stituent principles, and be shaped for the future destiny? Only let this be right, and, othor things being equal, all earthly govern ments will be right. .-Hence, says John- Angel James, every nation h: s stamped :, great value on the family compact, and guarded it with the most powerful sanctions. It is at the fire sides and upon the famnily hearth, that pa riotism; and every public virtue, grows; as it is in disordered families that factions demnagogues, and tyrannical oppressors are trained up, to bthineghbor's or their :country's scourge. tet e It is there that the thorn a'nd the b~riar, to ynse the~eeg nt smile of the prophet, or the myrtle and the'firtree, are reared, wvhich are hfudre tii~ lto&.e the ..ornament and de. 1 ~r thedefb~mity and misery, of the *point out eue ~tliing siissntial to a dgh adinitraionof family- government Kindness should be stamped on all the parent's~ acts in a family. Be kindly af fectioned 6ne to another, is a divine corn mand, peculiarly applicable to all parents (and to all families.) Parents should be self-possessed. To exercise a perfect command over one's self is highly important, especially in those who .would govern others. Nothing should be -done. through caprice, or in passion. Pa. rents should rule wvell their own house, hay. i g their children in subjection with all gravity. Equanimity of temper is also essential to a . proper administration of parental gov ernment. Many parents suffer themselves to change in their feelings by the most tri fling circumstances; sometimes calm and composed, then fretful and passionate ; some. times holding themselves in restraint, then giving a loose rein to their ill-humor. Let pirents remember that if they would govern wv-ll, they must possess and maintain even ness and firmness of mind. HOE AEFECTION8. The heart has memories thnt never die. The rough rubs of the world cannot oblit orate them. They are the memories of fiome-early home. There is a magic in the sound. There is the old tree under which the light-hearted boy swung many a day; yonder-the river in which he learned to swim; there the house in which he knew a parent's protection ; nay, there is the room in which lhe romped with brother and sister, alas! laid in tihe yard in which lie niust soon be gathered, over.shzadow~ed by yon old church, whither, with a joyous tr-oop like himself, he has often followed his pa. rents to worship with, and hear the good old mart who ministered at tire alter. Why, < even the very school-house, associated in youthful days with thought of tasks, nowc comes to bring pleasant rememberances of c many occasions that call forth sonme goen erous exhibitions of noble traits of humanc nature. There is where he learned to feel y some of his first emotions. There, per. d chance, he first met the being who, by her love and tenderness in life, has made a lI home for himself, happier than that which v his childhood knew. There are certain ti feelings of humanity,' and those too, among p the best, that can find an appropriate placef c for their exercise only by one's own fireside. d *There is privacy of that which it was aili species of desecration to violate. Hie who h seeks wantonly to invade it, is neither more v or less than a villian ; and hence there exists o no surer test of debasement of morals in a b - community, than the disposition to tolerate fi in any mode, the man who invades the k sanctity of private life. In the turmoil of 01 the wvorld, let there be at least one spot bi where the poor man may find affection and w. confidence which are not to be abused. a [Dr. Hlawkes. IpJ CRoss U~sDA~s.--Betsy Blake has a c( gentle rap for the knuckles of cross hus bands in the following characteristic para- es graph: u Then- when the wife was tired with looking wi all day after little things, and being patient m with the darlings who really don't know stL about the care they are, she would have wi kind looks from.- the husband who would in remember if. everything wasn't exactly right,,.that perhaps the baby hadn't been Ia: quit a much of n rmntle nat as usant or on that there had been a good deal to see abot the house. And instead of looking, put ou and saying, perhaps, a word that would al most break her tired heart, he would sa; such soothing things to her that the tire feeling would be thrown off from her heart as it swelled up to an answer soothings t him, knowing he too had been busy and a much tired as she. And then if the dar lings were not in their little beds they. woul feel the sort of atmosphere of such kin words, and would be more likely to go t dancing round the centre sun which mad everything so bright and warm. But from some things I've seen I'm sur some husbands seem to believe that ever body at home must be like angels, and ney be tired or dull, or have things out of pl when they come in from the office or coul ing-house. They can be as tired and -' perhaps, as they feel likihai" is right to ho" But tb - ..arac . good temper ..Aade happy without it - wvers that spring up in our path .y, reviving and cheering us. Kind word. and looks are the outward demonstration patience and forbearance is the sentimen within. There is much said about the na tural disposition and temper of men; an< the fact, that any one has a temper which is unhappy and unpleasant, is both accounte< for and apologized, by saying, that his tem. per is naturally an unpleasant one. It is a comfortable feeling to lay as much blam< upon nature as we can; ,ut the difficulty is that we do not try to master our temper No one has a temper naturally so good that it does not need attention and cultiva tion; and no one has a temper so bad, bu that, by proper culture it may become pleasant. One of the best disciplined tempers ever seen, was that of a gentleman who was naturally quick and irritable, rash and vio lent; but by having the care of the sick and especially of deranged people, he sc completely mastered himself, that he was never known to be thrown off his guard. The difference in the happiness which is received or bestowed by the man who guards his temper and that by the man who does not, is immense. E LIZA nrTTI l W~it bj. MIT SUNDAY BREECES. It chanced to be our washing day, And all our things were drying; The storm came roaring through the lines, And set them all a flying; I saw tihe shirts and petticoats Go riding off like witches; I lost-ah ! bitterly I wept I lost my Sunday breeches! I saw them straddling through the air, Alas ! too late to win thiemn; I saw them chase thie clouds, as if The devil Ihad been in theni. They were my darlings and my pride, bly boyhood's only riches ; " Farewell !farewell !" I faintly cried, " My breeches 0 , my brehe That night I saw them in my dreams ; Ilow changed from what I knew thai~ The dew had steeped their failed thress The wind ha whistled throuigh therjd-~ I saw the wide and gbastly rents Wh1ere demon claws had torn them; A hole was in their hinder parts, As if an imp had worn them. I have had many happy years, And tailors kind and clever; But thiose young pantaloonis have gone, Forever and forever !. And not till fate has cut the last Of all my earthily stitches, This achming heart shall cease to mourn Mly loved, my long lost breeches. TEE XflUSTER ABROAD. A friend in Stockbridge, 31Iass., sends us the followinmg anecdote of Rev. Zeb. Twich eli, a Methodist clergyman of full and regu lar standing, and a member of the Vermont conference. At one ime he represented Stockbridge in the Stata Legislature. Zeb, says our correspondent, is a man of fair talents, both as a preacher and a musi cian. In the pulpit he is grave, solemn, dig nified-a thorough, systematic sermonizer ; but out of the pulpit there is no man living wvho is more full of fun and frolio. On one occasion he wvas wending his way toward the seat of the annual confeirence of minis ters, in company with another clergyman. Passing a country inn, he remarked to his companion " The last time I stopped at that tavern, slept with the landlord's wife !" In utter amazement his clerical friend wanted to know what he meant. " I mean just what I say," replied Zeb; md on went the twvo travellers in unbroken silence, until they reached the conference. [n the early part of the session the confer-. mece sat with cl~osed doors, for the purpose )f transacting private business, and especi dlly to attend to the annual examination..of rach member's private character, or rather r onduct during the past year. For this pur mose the clerk called the roll, as was the ustom; and in due course Zeb's name was te alled. " Does any one know aught against the ondunct of brother Twichell durinig the past cear 1" asked the bishop, who was the presi ing officer. After a moment's silence, Zeb's travel- r *ng companion arose from his seat, and gi with a heavy heart, and grave demure count- 'j nance, said that he felt he had a duty to ir erform; one that he owed to God, to the ce hurch, and to himself. H~e must therefore P ischarge it fearlessly though with tremb- i" ng. lHe then related wvhat Zeb had told imn while passing the tavern, how he slept pm rith the landlord's wife. The grave body in f ministers was struck as with a thunder- r alt; although a few smiled, and glancedr rst upon Zeb and then upon the bishop, nowingly, for they know better thanm the - thers the character of the accused. The shop called up brother T., and asked him hat he had to say in relation to so serious charge. Zeb arose and said: of "I did the deed-I never lie." Then tusing with an awful seriousness, lie pro eded, with slow and solemn deliberation- - there was one little circumstance, howv er, connrec'ted with the afirm, I did notJ me to the brother.- It may not have much eighit with the conference, but although it mty bb deemed of trifling importance, I will r mte it.~ When I slept with the landlord's fe, as I told~ the brother, I kept thet tavcrn jeelf" co!~nne The long add froubleco fnne re- j redda titter followed,, and the next name t TEE UGLY FAMY. t In one of .the lower Districts of the Pal . metto State, there once lived a family of some six or seven persois, who were known I far and wide as the " Ugly Faniily.'? "I'll bet you ten dollars that you are the ugliest man in the State," said the Georgian. - Done!" said the wagoner; "come up I here, to the wagon." And going to the back of jhe wangon, he called out, "Wake up, I Jake, and put your head out here." lrhe Georgian, burning with curiosity, le. ned forward, as the .ovey wasraised sl4wly up. Suddenly his eyes fell upon a physiognomy so awfully, boundlessly, over poweringly ugly, that it seemed to be formed out of the double extract -of'delirium tre iapens. The horse snorted and started back in fright, threw his rider over his head, but the atter had scarcely touched the ground, be. ore he was mounted again.
