.jIegp th.ue--Wcst Telescope. e., . ACGetwOUT. -r ber of' years, the Generd Assembly of he 0. S. Presbyterian Church, have had an AnnudiSermon - on. Popery, as regularly as a erman ot M.i-sione. These sermons have usually been-pre;.ched by the ablest men in their church, and as.a consequence have been charae. terized by.narked ability. And, we doubt not, - have doe muclin opening the eyes of 14otes tant,.sY.t.-tLh-natnre of Popery, and the pur pOsIS of-Catholics in this country. The sermon, this year, was to have been preneihes1 .by Dr. J. A. Alexander, of Princeton, or bf- Rev. Stewart Rolbinson, his alternate. Dr. Alexander, for some cause, (don't know whether lie was afraid of Dr. Belliiger, and the mob, that-rnn Leaey off. or not) did not attend the-meeting, of the Assembly, and Mr. Robin son, though present, declined to preach the ap poiute-sermon. -This single failure will be regretted by hun dreds and. thousands. Just now Popery is ma king s prodigious effort to establish herself in tin onutry, aid she should be watched. Site iLt Apaer nda-like,.coiling herslf around Pro testantism,tind-if let alone, will. sooneror later, as she has-everdone when she has obtained the power, squeeze the life out of it. This. many arn beginning to see. And to them every blow that is.nol struck for its destruction is a source of .rtret.. . ..L :'Bt, this is not only the time when such a fiilure, to strike, is to be regretted; Charleston is the very. place -where iuch a blow is needed. The swrrlet-robed harlot, has been plying Imakt.4recently in that city, whiei ought to be rebutked To allow any class Of eit izens to say, who shall speak, and who shall not, what they shall-satnd what they shall not. is nti-repub jiean, and dangerous -to religious liberty. And therefore we think, the time and the p:ce, both c:lled.loudly for the " Sermon on Poperv." .However. for Dr. Alexander's absenc~e, and for Air. Robinsoit's unprepr.redness, perhaps no one is to blame. The failure in this case may have -been unintentional.- But when the time for the "appointment of a suitable person to preach the annual sermon on Popery before the next General Assembly, had arrived, a motion was made to postpone' the whole business." And strange to say, the mition was carried; in fact, was opposed only by two speakers. To his honor be ii s::id. 31r. Cook opposed the -resolution. The contest. he said, with Anti Christ had opened. We had our harnaess on. The question was: shall wc put it off, and re tire fronm the field 1 To what but cowardice would this be attributed ? Be it .o that it con. deused upon Piesbyterianisn tlc whole wra th of Popery, that was no reason why we should abtnd'.n our method of attek or defence. We ' had always been hated and re% iled bv Rome. Be it so.' .le cared not. What if all'the dogs in Christendom did bark at us, it was theglory of our ancestors that cotfron:ed oppo!i:ion for the sake of truth, nav, fttt-eted the earth with their blood. le would lie ashaamtted of the chtrrch if she did o'therwise than meet the ene. my, front to front, on the great question of the age. But the resolution to postpone indefinitely. was adopted--and so the Assembly la:s baeked out from the contest-has vielded'the field, ont that which Mr. Cook justly styles, " the great que-ition of the dav." "And free-lom star.eked whten Kociusko fell!" NAToar. RIEADING I. R. Co., I Philadelphia, Mlay 3d, 1852. J. S. Sr~vr.n, Eso.: Dear Sir: Wehave used your "PLASrICPAIr" for more than a year, aud for painting bridges, de pots, &c., &c., we have found it equal to any paint we have used ; in fact, we now give it it prererence over all others we have tried for such purposes. Yours, respeetrully, JouN TUcrER, President. The above is but one of the many certificates we have received from the gentlemen of our City, who have used Silverts Mineral Paints. Colors. We have seven diff'erent colors.viz: three browns, two chocolates, black and -yellow , and by combina tion, make every variety and shade of color. Iron. To iron. they furnish a perfect protection agninst rust, for they contain no metal, which, like white lend, acts destructively on the iron. In fact, this paint makes iron doubly valuable for building pur poses. Brick Work. They give to house walls a much heavier coating than any other paints, and if sanding is required, nothing holds so firmly or finishes so well with it. Old Roofs. Gives us a roof never so old and leaky, Silver's Mineral Paints will imake it cheaply new and more enduring thanw it ever was. Ships Using this extraordinary mineral as we prepare it for them, will be proof against the action of hot suns, -worms, and salt water. Directions. Use Linseed Oil, mix as thick as you can, and use as other paints. Th~ese..paints need but little dryer, and for priming and second.coating.in all. household work, they will bloing.eheaper ad nor..durblethan lead, Dcalers and consumers can procuro this paint of FRENCli & RICH1ARDS, Northwest Cor.
