Yrom the Carpet-Bag, OLD GRIMES'S MAIRE, 1AG. Old Grimes's mare is living yet, But ah ! how changed is she ; TIer head is like a hammer set, She limps in every knee. IHer tail no terror brings the flies, Full rough her coat of bay; Her ribs are bare, half blind her eyes, She scarce can munch her bay. And when she strays, the people cry So lank is she and lame "Young Grimes intends no horse to buy, ik's building, there's the frame." 'But years ago that bony nag Was all the country's pride; To trot or run none equaled Mlag, When Grimes was perched astride. To.church, a courting, or to mill, No other horse rode he ; She never balked at any hill, Or shied at any tree. And when he brought his lovely wife 11er name was Rosalind 'Twas 31ag that trotted, as for life, Her tail straight out behind. And ever, when a little Grimes Peeped forth into the day, She'd have the jolliest of times, And wink and wisk her hay. The children used to climb her legs, And sit from head to tail, With glowing cheeks and eyes like eggs, And thump upon a pail. But Mag held all the Grimeses dear, And so she never run, But bore them gently, as in fear Sonic injury might be done. And thus they grew firm friends, and long No trouble marred their joy ; But d'eath at last took from the threng Two girls and then- a boy.. The mother followed, and full soon Mg nissei her master dear; She bore them tottering to their tomb, And o'er them dropped a tear. And now of all that family She sees but one or two; A son, whose heart is on a spree, A daughter. on a beau. They bear small love to bony fag, She's poor and old and lame; They ride, but 'tis some gayer nag They could not brook the shamo. But Mag ! thou art so kind and true, That beautiful to me Thy Imnuner-head, thy faded line, Thy limpings in the knee. And when thou sleepest in thy grave, O'er thee 1'il carve the rhymes: " Hic jacet, Slag-one tear I crave 11er rider was Old Grimes." Your Babies not may Babie. A bout thirty-five years ago, there resi ded in the town of Hlebron, in this county a certain Dr. T., who became v-ery much enamored of a beautiful young lady, who resided in the same town. In due course of time they were engaged to be married. The doctor was a strong and decided Presbyterian, and his lady love was a strong and decided Baptist. They were sitting together one evening talking of their approaching nuptials, when. tbe doe tor remarked " I am thinking my dlear of tw~o events which I shall number amongst the happi est of my life." "And 'pray what may that be, Dr.?" remarked the lady. " One is the hour when I shall call you wife for the first time." " And the other ?" " It is wvhen we shall present our first born for baptism." , "What, sprinkled !" " Yes my dear, sprinkled." " Never shall a child of mine be sprin kled !" " Every child of mine shall be sprin kled." " They shall be, ha?" " Yes, my love." " Well, sir, I can tell you then, that your babies won't be my babios. So, g6od night, sir." The lady left the room, and the doctor left the house. The sequel to this true story was that the doctor never married and the lady is an old maid. TN one of the down east seaport lived a sailor noted for his great "power of swearing," and one day last spring be was observed by, some persons to fall broadside on a small patch of ice in the street, wvhich had resisted the ameliora ting influences of the season. The per sons who were passing stopped, expecting to hear some gigantic oaths from Jack under such trying circumstances. The old salt got up very coolly, however, and taking a good look at the treacherous ice, merely exclaimed: " Well, old follow the Fourth of July will fix you, any how." . CONTnasT or CowoRs.-The Portland Eclectic says that an exquisite young lady wriggled into a dry goqds store on Middle street, one day last week, and ad dressing the clerk with the most excruci ating drawl she could affect, inquired if he had any " subdued mouse color silk ?'" "No;" replied he, with a sudden and expressive twirl of the yard stick, "but wve have some enraged rat color." A PPLES AND PRINTER's TYrES.-SaY Sam Johnsing, you're a literatum nigga, answer me dis." . " Why am apples like printers' types? " I gips dat up, without furder .coremo fly, myself, I does." " Ah, you noncomlightenied brack man; it cause they're .often in nsE." SINGULAR OCCURRENCE.-While de. molishing our breakfast the other morn ing, we were forcibly struck with the unu sually rich flavor of our milk; indeed, the event was one of such a singular char acter that we determined to inform our self of the cause. At first we were under the impression that our milkman had read the Picayune, and felt a latent regard for the editor; but, to clear up all doubt, we dispatched a telegraphic inquiry to a friend in Orange county, asking for an explanation. After two hours of in expressible suspense, we received the fol lowing answer:--"The pumps in this sec tion are all frozen."-N. York Picayune. THE Providence Postman says that "kissing in the abstract" means kissing a pretty girl, all alone, by one's self. We do not know anything about "kissing in the abstract," but we can testify that kis sing a pretty girl in the entry, just before bidding her "good night," is no very un pleasant operation. To undertake to reason a girl out of love, is as absurd as would be the attempt to extinguish Vesuvius with a two ounce syringe. The only thing that will break a love fit, is hard work and " boiled pork." Good advice aud indoleuce only makes things " wus." THEuE is a grocer up town, who is said to be so mean that he was seen to catch a flea off his counter, hold him up by his hind legs, and look into the cracks of his feet, to see if he hadu't been steal. ing some of his sugar. THE GiiLs in Northampton, Mass., have been sending a bachelor editor bo gtets ef tansy and wormwood. He says le don't care; he had rather smell them than matrimony. How TO MAK)n MINEltAL W.TER. T IlE Second Session will cmnmenec on the 9th of January 1852. The Trustees congratulate thenielves, their friends and the public, on what they now con sider the permanent establishment uf an institu tion of learning of so high a charneter in their District. The benefits whieh'their own chiidren, with others, have experienced during the past Session, enables them with the greater confi dence, to recommend the Institution to the pat ronage of the community. The School was opened on the 1Sth of Sep tember last, with thirty-one Pupils, and has since been gradually increasing. It is confident ly expected that the number in attendance will be greatly increased during the next Session. The Institute building now contains seven rooms, all of which have been built, and are used, for purposes of Instruction. A fine apparatus; a large collection of Maps; Anatomical Charts, Globes, &c; a Museum of Natural History; a Cabinet of Minerals and Shells; furnish unusual facilities for ncquiring a practical knowledge of the different branehes of Science. The course of Study is of an elevated charne ter, and more comprehensive. than that of most jeninle institutions of the highest reputation. The PaRINCIPAL devotes the whole of his time to the supervision and instruction of the various classes. The Assistants are experienced in their diffe rent Departments, and those only of known sue cess in teaching are employed. The Academical year is divided into Sessions of 14 weeks eqch. It is of great importance that the student be present at the commence ment of the Session. The Classes are then formed, and a few weeks delay may afyect the standing of the pupil throughout the year. The Department of Music is under the super visiun of one of the most accurate and necom plished teachers in tie State; and it is helieved that unusual facilities are anflrded for nequiring a thourough knowledge of this difficult science. In addition to regular private b-sons, the pupils in this.dapartmcnt are divided into classes, and tanaiht on the plan of Pestalozzi. They devote much time to exercises, adapted to train the ear. and the voice, and to inpart an easy and brilliant excetution. If they pursue the prescribed course of munsi cal instruction, they aeguire the art of reading music with facility. They are required to lbe regolar and systemat ic ini practising daily at the lnstitute. The training and cultivation of the voice. receive an :unusual degree of attertion. The science of Elocution is here applied, in develop ing the voice for singing, with great effect. The Institution has been almost wveekly visited by at large number of the ladies and gentlemen of our village, who have invariably expressed the highest degree of satisfaction, at what thuey have heard and' see:: of the proficiency oef thue Pupils andl the arrangement of thme Institute. A nd the Trustees have oly to add in conclu sion, thatt white in their opinmioni. there are imany institutions of learning deservedly popular in our State, yet there arc none which can furnuirlh greater or miore stubstantial advantages to young Ualies than that under the charge of 3Mr. RArY Mo.'D.
