LET US LOVE ONE ANOTHlER, LcT us love one another-not long may we sty; In this bleak world of mourning, some droop while the day, Others fade in the noon, and few linger till eve: Oh ' there breaks not a heart but leaves some one to grieve; And the fondest, the purest, the truest that met, Iave still found the need to forgive and forget; Then oh ! though the hopes that we nourished decay, Let us love one another as long as we stay. There are hearts like the ivy, though all be de cayed That it seemed to twine foundly in sunlight and shade; No leaves droop in sadness, still gaily they spread, Undimm'd midst the blighted the lonely and dead ; But the misletoe clings to the oak not in part, But with leaves closely round it, the root in its heart ; Exists but to twine it-imbibe the same dew. Or to fall with its loved oak, and perish there tro. Thus let's love one another 'midst sorrows the worst, Unaltered and fond as we loved at the first, Tho' the false wing of pleasure may change and forsake, And the bright urn of wealth into particles break ; There are some sveet affections that wealth can not buy, That cling but still closer when sorrow draws nigh And remain with us yet though all else pass away Then let's love one another as long as we stay. Wit a(m fyIOr. The Lord Sent it if the Devil Brought it. In my younger days, I was what peo ple called a " wild chap," and I rather think I was something of a high boy. Anything like fun stirred tme up from the bottom, and the way I " went it" some times, when I was stirred up, people said was rather curious. I believe my respect for religious peo ple was not quite as high as it should have been, not so high as it is now. 'his grew out of two things-a defective edu cation and thoughtlessness. Ten or fif teen years added to my mortal life has sobered me somewhat, and at the pre sent writing, I own to a profound respect for religion. I state this, that neither the gay nor thoughtful reader may mis understand me, if the story I am going to relate should seem to deal with some levity in matters held sacred-I think the rebuke I got, often as I have laughed at it since, put the laugh completely on me There resisded in our neighborhood a poor widow whose means of support were extremely limited. Between nur sing herself for rheumatism, and spinning and knitting, most of her lonely time wats passed. I am ashamed to say that on one or two occasions, I joined some wild youngsters in playing off tricks upon her, such as making unusuatl noises about the the house at night, smoking her almost to death by putting a board over the top of her low mud-built chimney, and such like doings, that w~e thought rare spo:rt, but for which we dleservedl a little whole some chastisement, if there had been any one authorized to administer it. One night, soon after- dark, it happen ed that I was returning home in comipany with a merry fellow about my own age, and had to go by old Granny Bender's cottage. I had been into the town, and was bringing home a couple of " baker's loaves," of which some of our penople wiere as fond as city people are of getting now and then a good taste of country "home made." "Tom," said I, as the old woman's cottage came in sight, at a turn of the road, "suppose we have a little fun wvithm Granny Bender ?" "Agreed," was Toem's rep~ly, for Ite was always readly for sport. We had not fully decidled on what we would do, when wve caine to the cottage, and paused to settle our mode of annoy ance. The only light within, was the dim flickering of a few small sticks burn ing on the hearth. As we stood near the windlow, listening to what was going on inside, we found that Granny was pray ing, andi, a little to our surprise, asking for food. " As she expects to get bread from heaver," saidl I, irreverently, " I sup pose she will have to be accomnodated." And turning from the windowv, I clam bored up, noiselessly, to the top of the chimney, a feat of no great difficulty,' and tumbled my twvo loaves do wn. When I reached the window again, in order to see what ef!'ect this mode of snpply would hav-e upon Granny Bender, I found the good 01(d creature on her knees piously thanking God for having answered her prayer. "That's cool," says I to Tonm; " now isn't it ?" "I rather think it is," replied Tom. " And is the 01(1 woman really such a' fool as to think the Lord answered her prayer, and sent her wvell-baked loaves down the chimney ?" "No doubt of it." "It won't do to let her labor under 3 this mistake; no, never in the wvorld," said I. "Hello! Granny !" and I dIrew open a the window, and pushed my laughing face into the room. She had just risen from her knees, and a was about putting a piece of thme bread fl into her mouth. "Now, Granny Bender," said I, "it isn't possible that you believe that bread s came from heaven! Why, you old sin ner, you ! I threw it doewn the chiimney." ance was turned fully towards me, and by the dim light of the feeble fire, I could see that there were tears or thankfulness upon her faded and withered face. The expression of that face (lid not in the least change, there was a dtp rebuke in the tone of her voice, as well aa in the words she uttered, -as she said: The Lord sent it, if the devil brought it!I" You max be sure that I vanished in. stanter, while Tom clapped his hands and shouted ; Good ! good ! too good ! Oh dear! but the old lady was too much for you that timle." I tried to laugh with him as we went off home, and did laugh, as lond as he did, but somehow or other the laugh did not appear to do me any good. Afler that I left Granny Bender alone. A M-sQuToE STbUY.-We Couid not credit this story if it was not confirmed by strong current testimony. We once heard of a Yankee clock pedlar, who be. ing hard pressed by the munquetoes of Florida, took reftige in an old sugar house, under an immense boiler. For a time lie felt quite secure ; but presently, to his ut ter astonishment, he discovered that they were penetrating the bottom and sides of the metal boiler in every direction. With the natural shrewdness of his class he drew frow his coat pocket a smal! ham. mer, which lie carried for the purpose of setting up his clocks and aused himsellf by clinching the protruding bills, as wrought nails are clinched. He had occupied himself in this way for some time, and had made fast the hills of some hundreds of his blood-thirsty assailants when lie discovered that the immense cast iron kettle, weighing something in the neighborhood of a ton, began to move. The next moment, to his utter consterna tion, it rose from the ground and wa borne of' by the musquetoes in their ef forts to release themselves from it. Our informant did not state whether or not the pedlar was devoured by the musque. toes that remained. The probability is that he perished, as no patent right has ever been taken out for a musqueto trap. -Savannah News. A C r ns'.l %-.\ in Scotland dnsired his hearers never to call one another liars, hut when any one said a thing that was not true, they ought to whistle. One Sunday be preached a sermion on a para. ble of the loaves and fishes and inbeing at a loss how to explain it, he said the loaves were not like those now-a-days, they wee as big as the hills of Scotland. Ie had scarcely pronounced the words, when he heard a loud whistle. " What's that ?" said he, " who calls me a liar ?" " It is I, Willy McDonald, the baker." " Well, Willy, wlat objections ha'ye to what I told ye?" - " None Master John, only I wanted to know what sort of ovens they had to bake thcse loaves in ?" Cnow EAT[N.-A worthiy old farmer residing in the vicinity of Lake Maho pack, was worried to dleath last summer, by boarders. They four.d fault with his table, andl said he had nothing (it. to eat.
