Deacon Smith's Bull;
O1, MIKE FlNK IN A TIGAT PLACE.
Mike Fink, a notorious Buckeye bun
ter, was contemporary with the celebrated
Davy Crockett, and his equal in all things
appertaining to human prowess. It was
even said that the animals in his neighbor
hood knew the crack of his rifle, and
would take to their secret hiding places on
the first intimation that Mike was about.
Yet strange, though true, he was but little
known beyond his immediate "settle
ment."
When we knew him, he was an old man
-the blast of seventy winters had silver.
ed o'er his head and taken the elasticity
from his limbs; yet in the whole of his
life was Mike never worsted, except on
one occasion. To use his-own language,
he never "gin in, used up, to anything
that traveled on two legs or four," but
one.
" That once, we want," said Bill Slash
er. as some dozen of us sat in the bar-room
of'the- only tavern in the "settlement."
"Gin it to' us now, Mike-you've pro
mised long enough, and you're old now,
and needn' care,' continued Bill'.
"Right, right! Bill," said Mike, "but
we'll open with a licker all round fust,
it'll kind o' save my feelin's I recken-"
"Thar, that's good. Better than t'other
barrel, if anything !"
" Well, boys," commenced Mike; you
may talk o' your scrimmages, tight places
and sich like, and subtract 'em altogether'
in one all-mighty big 'un, and they hain't
no more to be compared to the one I war
in, than a dead kitten to an old she b'ar!
I've fout all kinds of varmints, from au
Ingin down to -a rattlesnake! and never
was will'n to quit fast, but this once--an-d
'twas with a Bull! You see, boys, it was
an awful. hot day in August, and I war
nigh runnin' off into pure ile, when I war
thinkin' that a dip in the creek mout save
me. Well, thar was a mighty nice place
in Deacon Smith's medder for that partic
'lar business. So I went down amongst
the bushes to unharness. I jisthauled the
old red shirt over my head, and war think
in' how scrumptious a feller of my size
would feel a wallerin' round in that ar
water, and was jest 'bout goin' in, when I
seed the old Deacon's Bull a makin' a
B-line to whar I stood. I know'd the old
cuss, for he'd skar'd more people than all
the parsons o' the "settlement," and cum
mighty near kill'n a few. Thinks I, Mike
you're in rather a tight place-get your
fixins on, for he'll be a drivin' them big
horns o' his in yer bowels afore that time!
- Well, you'll hey to try the old varmint
naked, I reck'n. The Bull war' on one
side o' the creek and I on t'other, and the
way he made the " sile" fly for a "While,
as if he war a diggin my grave, war dis
tressin'!
" Come on ye bellerinoldheathin,. said
I, and don't be a standiin thar; for, asthe
old' Deacon .savs~ok-the devil, '(yeri a
comely to look on." This kind o'-rea~h

made a drive. And as I don't like to
stand in any bodj's wvay,I gin him plenty
sea-room-l So he kind o's passed by me
and come out on t'other side; and, as the
Captain o' the. MaTd:Swamp Rangers
would say, " boutface for,'nother.charge."
'Though I was ready for 'im thisitimne, he
come mighty niglr rumin' foul o'?me! So
1 made up inymind the next tim~ehe went
out he wotildn't be alone. So when he
passed, I grappled his tail, and he pull'd
me out on the "sile," and as soon aseve
wvar both a' top of the-bank old brindle
stopp'd and war about comin' round agin
wvhen I begin pull'n t'other way. Well, I
reek'n this~ kind o' riled him, for he fust
stood stock still 'and ,look'd at: me for a
spell, and then commenc'd pawin. and bel
lern, -and the way he made his hind gear
in pray iu the air, war beautiful!. But it
wvarn't no use, he couidn't tech me, so be
kind o' stopped to get wvind for suthin
By this time, I had made up my mind to
stick to his tail as long as it stuck to his
back-bone! I didn't like to holler for
help, nuther, kas it war agin my principle,
and then, the Deacon had preachin at his
house, and it .warn't far off nuther. I
Anow'd if he hern the noise, the hull con
gregation would come down ; and as I
wvarn't a married, man, and had a kind o'
hankerin arter a gal that war thar, I didn't
feel as if I wvould like to be seed in that
prcdicament.
" So, says T, you old sarpent, do yer
cussedest! And so lie did; for he drug
me over every briar and stump in the field,
until I war sweatin and bleedin like a fat
bear with a pack o' hounds at his heels.
K And my name ain't Mike Fink, if the old
critter's tail and I didn't blowv out some
times at a dead level wvith the varmint's
back! So you may kalkerlate wve mnde
good time. Bimneby he slackened a little,
and then I had 'im for a spell, for I jist
* dropped behind a stump and thar snubbed
the critter! Nowv, says I, you'll pull up
this 'ere wvhite oak-break yer tail! or
jest hold on a bit till I blowv!
" Well, while I was settin thar, an idea
struck me-that I had better be a gettin out
C)' this in some way. But howv, adzacly,
wvas the pint! If I let go anid run he'd be
afoul o' me sure !. So-lookin at the- mat
ter in all its bearis, I cum to the conclu
sion that I'd better let somebody knowv
wuhar I was! So I gin a yell louder than.
a locomotive whistle, and it wvarn't long
afore I seed the Deacon's two dogs a com
ing down -like as if they war seein which
could get thar fast. I know'd who they
w~as arter-they'd jine the Bull again me,
I war sartain, for they war orful wene
mnous and had a spite agin me. So, says
L, old brindle, as ridin is as cheap as wvalk
in. on, this rout, if you've no objections,
I'll jist take a deck passage on that ar
back o' yourn! So I wvasn't long getten
* ~ astride of him, and theni if you'd been
thar, you'd 'ave sworn than warn't nothing
hauman in that ar mix ! the site flew so or
*fully as the critter and I railed round the
fi.l-one dog on one side and one on
'tother, trying to clinch my feet! I pray'd
and cuss'd, and cuss'd and pray'd, until I
couldn't tell which I did last-and neither
warri't of any use, they war so orfully
mixed up.
"Well, I reckon I rid an hour in this
way, when my old brindle thought it war
time to stop to take in a supply o' wind
ind cool off a little! So when we g' I
vround to a tree that stood thar, he ::a
t'rally halted! Now, says 1, old boy,
you'll lose one passenger sartain! So I
jist clum upon a branch kalkelatin to roost
thar till I starved, afore I'd be rid round
in that ar way any longer. I war a ma
kin tracks for the top o' the tree, when I
heard suthin a makin an orful buzzin over
head. I kinder look'd up and if thar
warn't-well there's no use a swearm
now, but it war the biggest hornet's nest
ever built!
"You'll "gin in" now, I reckon, Mike,
case thar's no help for you! But an idea
struck me, then, that I'd stand a heap bet
ter chance a riden the old Bull than where
I war. Says I, 'old feller, if you'll hold
on. I'll ride to the next station! any how,
let that be whar it will!" So I jist drop
ped aboard him, agin, and looked aloft to
see what I'd gained in changin quarters:
and, gentlemen, I'm a liar if thar warn't
nigh a half a bushel of the stingin var
mints ready to pitch into me when the
word "go" was gin! Well,! reckem they
got it, for "all hands" started for our
company! Some on 'em hit the dogs
about a quart stuck me, and the rest
charged on old brindle. This time, the
dogs led off rust, " dead" bent for the old
Deacon's and as soon as old brindle and
I could get underway, we followed! And
as I war only a deck passfnger, and had
nothin' to do with steering the craft, I
swore if I had we shouldn't have run that
channel, any how!
"But, as I said afore, the dogs took the
lead-brindle and I next, and the hornets
dre'kly arter. The dogs yellin-brindle
bellering, and the hornets buzzin and sting.
in! I didn't say nothin, for it warn't no
use. Well, we'd got about two hundred
yards from the house, and the deacon hern
us and cum out. I seed him hold up his
hand and turn white! I reckoned he w.s
prayin, then, for lie didn't expect to le
called for so soon, and it wan't long,
neither, afore the hull congregation, men.
women and children, cum out, and then
all hands wept to yellin! None of them
had the fust notion that brindle and I be
longed to this world. I jist turned my
head and passed the bull congregation!
I seed that run would be up soon, for
brindle couldn't turn an inch from the
fence that stood dead ahead!
" Well, we reached that fence, and I
went ashore, over the old critter's head,
landing on t'other side, and lay thar stun.
ned. It warn't long afore some of 'cm
as war not so scared, come round to see
what I war! For all hands kalkelated
that the bull and I belonged together 1
But when brindle walked off by himself,
they seed how it wir, and one of 'em said,
"Mike Fink has got the wust of the
srimmage once in his life !"
