DMY EARLY HOME.
rsit alone-alone in thought,
And thronging visions come,
In rainbow tints of beauty caught
From childhood's happy home.
0 happy home! best boon below,
To passing pilgrims given;
First fountain spring of joy we know,
And fittest type of Heaven.
How truthfully the dear ones rise,
As mem'ry calls them up;
"see the smiles and loving eyes,
Of all that kindred group.
I'm with them now, a boy again,
My heart is light with joy ;
No anxious care of thought or pain;
Our blissful sports alloy.
Seated around the blazing fire,
With mirth in every heart ;
Our mother dear and loving sire,
In merry plays take part.
Our simple hearts all nature love
The pretty birds and flowers;
The dancing brook and shady grove,
The sunshine and the showers.
And when at night we go to rest,
Our mother's prayer we hear ;
'Tis thus we all with love are blest,
And nothing know'of fear.
We ask no joy we cannot find,.
In this abode of love;
All is so dear, so good and kind,
So like the home above.
My dream is o'er-that early home
ties mantled in past years ;
aut when my heart feels sad and lone,
When flow unbidden tears;
The faith-and hope my soul assure,
That in the spirit land.
I'll meet again as angela pure,
That cherished household band.
I LOVED HER.
Iloved her when her girlish face,
With smiles and blushes rife,
First sunned with all matchless grace
My else unenvied life ;
When from her young heart's secrecy,
As saints ascend the skies,
The tell tale truths resistlessly
Would haunt her timid eyes.
I loved her when the festal throng
11er joyous laughter woke ;
Some hidden rill the flowers among,
Less sweetness would invoke :
And later, when the passive shade
Of thought her features wore
A twilight's wealth o'er summer glade
Still dearer than before.
I loved her when my plighted brile
Half fear, half tenderness
We dared the tempest to divide,
Our hearts' deep truthfulness.
But now, when years and constancy
~isepioed her-faithful sow
The tendril to its guardin tree
0, most I love her nowv!
An Irish Haiute.
Two Irishmen we're left in chargo of a
ship while its officers wvent ashore, and
strictly enjoined not to make or permit
any noise on board ; but a jug of " onkd
Irish"~ one of them had, and the opportu.
nity for a " bit of a spree" wiere too great
a tomptation for themi to resist. Th'ey
indulged freely, and as many of our public
men have been known to do, soon drank
themselves into a patriotic spirit.-When
one says to the other
" Be jabers, and let's fire a salute."
"Agreed," says the other, " but that
'aid make the devil's own. noise."
" Tut; man," replied the first, "we'll
stop that."
" Jest you hould a Uag over the mouth
of the gun, me darlint, and we'll have a
roarin' salute without any noise at all."
Pat acquiesced in the arrangement and
held the bag as directed, while the other
touched off the cannon. The officers,
bearing the report, hastened on board,
where they found only one of the Irish
men, and every thing in a great state of
bewilderment. He wvas asked w~hamt had
become of his comrade.-" Sure," said
he, " Patrick was houldin' a bag over the
mouth of the cannon, to stop the noise,
wvhilo I touched it off, and the last I
seed'd of him or the bag they were goin'
in a great hurry towvards shore. anid that's
the last account I can give ye."
BAD THiINGS.-Anl unfaithfuf servant, a
smoky house, a stumbling horse, a seold
ing wife, an aching tooth, an empty purse,
an undutiful child, an incessant talker,
hogs that break through enclosures, a
dull razor, musquitoes, and-a subscriber
that won't payi for his paper.
" CArrArN," said a ragged country ur
chin to a city dandy with an immense
shirt collar, " Captain, are you going to
haul manure to-day I"
- "No, you ragged rascal; what makes
you ask that question ?"
" Why, kase you've got such a thun

A TALKIN~G matCh lately " came off"~

continued thirteen hours--the rivals being
a Frenchman and a Kentuckian. The
bystanders and judges were all talked to

morning, they found the Frenchman dead
and the Kentuckian whispering in his ear.

I BEG leave respectfully to inform the citizens
of Edgefield, Village and Country, that I have
commenced a MERCANTILE BUSIN ESS in
the house situated between Mr. BaYAN'S 6tore
and the Court House.
My STOCK, consisting of all the varieties
usually found in a Village Retail Store, has been
recently purchased in Charleston, from Houses
that import their Goods,principally, direct from
Europe. And I flatter myself, that an ex
perience of five years in an Importing and Job
bing House in Charleston, together with other
facilities, las enabled me to get a STOCK of
GOODS. that will, in point of STYLS and ratc.,
compare favorably with any Establishment in the
place. Persons wishing to purchase Goods for
CAsai or on a cred't until first of January next,
will loose nothing by giving me a eall.
A small share of patronage is carnestly solicited.

Pleasc to read the following commendatory
letter from Judge IIughes, of Burke courty,:
Ez.a:oitE, BURE Cy., Dec. 22, 1850.
Ma. J. N. MAasatt.,-Dear Sir: In compli
anee with your request, I make this simple state
moent of facts. My boy Daniel stuck a thorn in
his foot about the first of last June, the thorn
was etracted, and no more thought of it for 15
or 20 days, his foot then began to swell, and in a
few days it was opened. It discharged a large
quantity of matter. The discharge continued
for eight days, and then ceased. His foot then
re-commenced swelling and extended up his leg,
thigh, and hip, with violent pain. lie then be
gan to spit from his lungs matter similar to that
discharged from the abscess on his foot. I then
called in medical aid, and from theemedies-used,
he was alternately b'etter and worse for eight or
ten weeks. During this time a large abscess
formed upon the hip, the discharge was large,
and as soon as it ceased. a general swelling of his
leg, thigh and breast commenced, which was very
hard to-the tocch. and at times experienced much
difficulty in swallowing. Medical aid seemed of
no further avail, and was discontinued. I then
had recourse to your " Magical Pain Eradicator."
In forty-eight hours, from the time I commenced
its use, his foot began to soften ; the swelling on
his hip and breast subsided, and I am pleased to
say he is now well.
I again used your remedy in a ease of Neu
ralgia. with great success, giving immediate re
lief. I have tried it also for Tooth-Ache, with
my youngest child, with entire success.
From the success I have had in the use of
your-" Magisal Pain Eradicator," I have no hesi
tation in recommending it to, the public.
Yours truly,
. W. HUGHES."
Tie above statements of the use of "Mar
shall's Magical Pain Eradicator," arc known by
me to be true.
