a. - forthe sake of harmony would wait for it two yeas-he had little confidence though in previous Co-operation, but thought it cer taiatocome.subsequently to action. He * ast h'w6ever in the meantime for taking s;ome-irrevoCiblo step, lool:ing to disunion like Cortes-when he landed his hand full of troopsdn the shores of Mexico, for the conquest of that empire, he went in for burn ing the ships behind him--he would move in the Convention to recall our representa tives and senators from Congress, and go for cutting one by one the ligaments whic'i bind us to the Union. He would have the 'steps of the State to be forward not back. war, after waiting a reasonable time for co-operation and not obtaining it-he then went for throwing the secession flag, to the breeze and trusting to the God of battles. Palmetto Regiment. We are requested to inform those members of the Palmetto Regiment who propose meeting at Columbia on the anniversary of the battle of Churubusco, that the Town Council have. made arrangements for their entertainment at any of the Hotels they may -select for themselves; and that on the 19th and'20th committees will be at the depots of the different Rail-roads to receive them as they arrive. The committee request those arriving previously to leave their names with Col. Maybin, at the Congaree House. r We are also gratified to perceive that the South Carolina Rail-road Company have tendered a free passage for them to and from Columbia. We have no doubt but the Green ville and Charlotte roads will tender the same privilege. The object of the meeting is one that appeals to the patriotism of Carolinians, and we have all reason to be-licve will be enthusiastically carried out.-Caroiiuiau & Telegraph. THE Mobile Tribune of Sunday, says; "There is a rumor in town that the difliculty between Foote and Quitman, of which we gave some account a few days ago, led to a duel, in which Foote was killed." -0 ALABAMA ELECTIoN.-In the First Con gressional district, the majority of Bragg, the Southern Rights candidate, is about 2,000. In the Second district, Abererombie's (Sub missionist) majority is 1,1'1. In the Third district, Harris (Southern Rights) is elected by 543 majority. In the Fourth district, Erwin (Southern Rights) is elected by 430 majority. We have nothing reliable from the other three districts. MONTGOMERY, (Ala.) August 11th.-The Tuscaloosa Monitor (whig) admits the elec tion of Erwin. His reported majority is 430. The result in Hubbard's district is doubtful. The contest is close, but the chances are in favor of Hubbard. We cannot classifythe Legislature, but the Union men claim a majority. As in iany of the counties the question was not made, there is no data to make up an opinion. We think the Union men have it. NORTH CAROLINA ELEcTIoN.-We learn by a gentleman from North Carolina that the re turns in Stanly's district, so faras heard from, show a gain of 74 for the Democratic candi date over the last election, when Staniy was elected by 47 votes, and afford a hope that he is.defeated. KENTUCKY ELECTrox.-The returns thus far received show the election of Presley Ewing, (W.) in the 3rd district, In the 5th district, James W. Srtone, (Democrat) is probable elected. which is a democratic gain. In the 9th district Isham G. Harris, (Democrat) is re-elected. The next delegation will stand five Demn. oerats and four Whlgs and one Independent WVhig. The Whigs generally concede the eleetion of Lazarus WV. Powell (De mocrats) as Gov ernor. John B. Thompson (Whig) is elected Lieutenant Governor. CONDITION OF FREE NEGROS.-The free negro question is thc most insoluble of all the social problems of the day, and stands as a practical sarcasm on all the theories ofI abolition emancipation, immediate or remote, with or without expatriation. The follow ing showvs what the condition of a free negro is in the young and fertile State of Ohio: "FREE NEGROF.s IN Onmo.-A writer in the Baltimore Patriot, wvho is travelling in Ohio, gives the following account of the Randolph negroes, who. it will be remember ed, were driven from thme homes which had been procured for them, by the whites: " Troy, about twenty miles from Dayton, is a small and rather dilapidated town, be tween this place anid Pequa. Along the canal the majority of the Randolph negroes arc located. It was in the adjoining county of Mercer that thme large tract of land was purchased for their settlement, from which they were forcibly ejected by white inhabi tants. The condition of these poor creatures is a sad commentary on the miserable policy of emancipating negroes, and allowing thenm to remain in this country. The majority of these once invaluable servants are now worth less pests upon the community among whom they are located, and often want for the com mon ntecessaries of life. I heard several of them express an ardent wish to return to the shores of Roanoke again, where they once had plenty, and did not know what it was to suffer for want." --- BEWARE OF MAP YENDERS ()-W~e learn from the (Georgetown) True Republican of the 30th ultimo, that Dr. Packard, a map Vender and Abolitionist, after having spent about two weeks in and about Georgetown,4 where he succeeded in selling three maps, and securing half a dozen subscribers for as many more, was waited upon by the Coin mnittee of safety of the Southern Rights Association, and inform that it would be -' the part of prudence for him to limit his stav" in that neighborhood, wvheretupon the saill Dr. Packard " took up the Line of march in the course of an hour afterwards." TxE AUGUsTA BRIDG s.--The Rome, (Geo) Sordherner speaking of the proposal of the South-Carolina Rail Road Company to ex tend the-road across the Savannah River, And to establish a Depot in Augusta, thinks that it would conduce to the interest of mid dle and Cherokee Georgia-to have the Depot established, and hopes that, inasmuch as the charges on freight~ over the Augusta Brtdge now exceed twenty-five per cent, the peoplei of upper Georgia will free themselves fron,, what it characterises as, an " outrageous im position." --------- PosT OFFICE OrER AToNS.-The postmas. ter general has established a new post.office at Reynosa, Laurens Dist rict. T. WVier, Post master, as-,also one at Mollihorn, Newberry District, J. N. McCrackin, Postmaster. Thme office. heretofore. known by the appellation of Poplar Grove, in Newberry District, in fu ture, is-to- be called Beth Edcn. -A Conasroanuxt. of the New York Her ald says, that Cot Fremont's agent, in England,'his' sold Fremont's right to 45,000 acres of land in California, to a company in Londonf, for $22 per aere,- amounting, in all, toa narly-a million of doar. . - . From Cuba. By the New Orleans papers of the 7th, we notice the arrival of the Cherokee, bringing dates from Havana to the 2nd inst. 'The Delta says: 'We conversed to-day with a gentleman directly from Puerto Principe. He tells us that the patriots-the whole people, in facto of that district-are in the finest spirits their enthusiasm is unbounded-the women evincing greater ardor in the cause than even the men. Before the young and the brave set out to join the patriot standard, their lovers invariably tell them-come home vie tors, or return not at all ! This gentleman tell us-what indeed we already know-that there is no reliance to be placed on the statements published by the Spanish authorities. They suppress every thing that tells in favor of the patriots, while they magnify every incident a hundred-fold that can be construed into an evidence of their own success. "They publish long lists of prisoners, and of deserters from the Patriot camp, while. in fact, there has not been yet. a single desertion from the Patriot ranks, and the government forces have made but one prisoner, Aguero and, although since his aarest they have daily threatened to shoot him, they have, up to this time, been afraid to carry their threats into execution. The editor had also a conversation with a gentleman from Havana: " There are, he says, now concealed in the house of an American friend of his in Ha !van, two oflicers of the Spanish array, a lieutenant of the 12th regiment, and an adju. tant of the 9th regiment. They state that fully two-thirds of the army in the island are imbued with the spirit of disaffection, and that they only await the arrival of Gen. Losez to march over, arms and amnunition, to his standard. Of all this we have ourselves very strong corroborating proof. The army will, therefore, be found rather a brittle staff for the royalists to lean on for support." War. W. Batowx, says the Baltimcre Sun, a fugitive slave, now in England, advises fugitives not to come to that country. He thinks they are poor enough there already. He advises those miserably subsisting in Canada also to emigrate to the West Indies, and wishes their friends to get up an organi zation for that purpose. Eir A NEw POST Oflice, ealled Buck Head, has been established in Pike county. Alabama, and Daniel W. Jefeoat appointed Post Master. OBITUARY, DsPARTeD this life, at his residence in this District, on the 21st July last, in the 76th year of his age, Mr. JOHN JORDAN. The de ceased was a good citizen and a remarkably ex emplary man in all the relations of life. In 1832 he became a member of the Baptist Church at Goodhope, and in 1831 was ordained a Deacen. Mr. Jordan exhibited his religion in his life, and will long be remembered for his pious walk and conversation. le lost his wife some years be fore his own death, but left surviving him, chil dren and grand-children to mourn their loss. le gave the most satisfactory proof in his deport ment as a christian and during his last sickness, that the loss of his sur viving friends was his eter nal gain. C OMIIERCIAL. - COLUMBIA, ALG. 11. The- week just brought to a close has been pne of unusual dullness and inactivity in the ctton market ; so much so that the sales of the week have been too inconsiderable to be a fair criterion of the present value of the article. In the course of the week two steamers have ar rived from Europe, viz: the Atlantic, with dates from Liverpool to the 23d, and the Europa, with dates to the 26th nlt. In the present duill and inactive state of the market it is impossible to say to what extent prices might have been effect ed by thmese accounts had there been a supply of' cotton for sale ; as it is, huowever, we contnue our former quotationm, with this remark, that the must be taken as the nominal value of the articee for the present.-Carolinian. CH A RLESTON, Auo. 11. There was considerable improvement in our cotton market to-day, the demand resulting in the sale of 650 bales, at 5A a 84-thue bulk (3S0 bales) at 75 a S-fuller prices than for several days.-Mercury.
