Dni, i this Village on the 20th inst., Mrs.
SUSAN M. NCItOLLS, relict of Mr. R. ti.
, l cuo..s, late Recter of the Edgefield Female
Institnte, leaving two small children. She was a
native of Philadelphia.
* tm at his residence in this District, on Wed
nesday the 9th of this month, of Typhoid Fever,
OLIVER TOWLES.
The deceased had attaine I to the 51st year of
his age, and by industry, and good Inanagement
had accumulated a considerable estate for his
wife and children.
It would, perhaps, be unnecessary to say more
in regard to the subject of this brief notice, for
he was a man well known to the whole District.
le has occupied a conspicuous position before the
people for the last twenty years. The first pub
lie station he held was that of Colonel of the Sa
luda Regiment. Ho was then elected Sheriff,
Ordinary, and member to the Legislature. sue
oessivecly, all of which posts lie filled with honor
to himself and to his native District. No man
ever discharged a public trust with more up
rightness, and more to the satisfaction of the peo
ple; and ho inan ever departed this life more be
loved, respected and regretted by all his intimate
acquaintances. At the time of his death, he
was a member of the two fraternities of Odd
Fellows and Free Masons, which bodies have
already borne testimony to his virtues, in resolu
tions highly -affecting, kind and complimentary.
I would not, with an nngentle hand, re-open
the recent wounds of his bereaved family, by al
luding fo"that portion of his life which is best
known to 'themselves, or by stating facts inti
mately connected with his domestic and private
relations, which might painfully suggest to them
how great was his kindness and how irreparable
has been their loss. In the government of his
family, no man ever exhibited more patience, ten
derness, or consistency of conduct. Ile was a
good husband,~a gener.>us father, and a just and
merciful master. As a neighbor he was obliging
and courteous-and as a friend unexacting and
faithful.
In hiedeath, the State has last one of her tru
est sons-his neighborhood. a pattern of industry
and honor, and his faumily, a husband, a father,
and a friend.
In his last moments, he espressed a perfect re
signation to his fate, and died triumphing in the
mercy and goodueas of God. This circumstance
alone should do much to soothe the ailietions of
his sorrowing family and friends, and induce
them to imitate his noble example, and strive to
follow him to the bright land of the just.
DIED, in this District, on the 17th instant,
SALLIE MEANS, daughter of Capt. PaEsTON
S. and MAaTA lBaooxs. She was born on the
2nd April, 1848.
The writer of this notice is well aware that an
elaborate panegyrie of so youthful a subject,
would bein bad taste, and precluded by the na
ture of the-case. But infancy may have its char
acteristic qualities as well as mature life, and the
opening bud may foreshadow the coming flower.
The sweet.smile, the happy spirit, the gentle,
confidiuig, affectionate temper, the ready obedi
ence. and I may add the personal attractions of
the dear.little girl, made her an object of peculi
ar loveliness, and lent a charm which is seldom
exhibited at so early a period. But she is gone,
and iesignation now becomes a duty. The Lord
hptaklen her to Himself, and in His boson she
rests, secure against the storms and tempests,
the ssfroms and troubles of earth.
It died to sin, it died to cares,
Yut for a moment felt the rod;
0-mourner, sush, the Lord declares,
Sheh are the children of our God."

I BEG leave respectfully to inform the citizens
of Edgefield, Village and Country, that I have
commenced a MERCANTILE BUSINESS in
the house situated between Mr. BRYAN's Store
and the Court House.
My STOCK, consisting of all the varieties
usually found in a Village Retail Store, has been
recently purchased in Charleston, from Houses
that import their Goods, principally, direct from
Europe. And I flatter myself, that an ex
perience of five years in an Importing and Job
bing House in Charleston, together with- other
facilities, has enabled me to get a STOCK of
GOODS. that will, in point of STYLE and mica,
compare favorably with any Establishment in the
place. Persons wishing to purchase Goods for
CAsH or on a credit until first of January next,
will loose nothing by giving me a call.
A small share of patronage is earnestlysolicited.
