WIrDY HILL, S. C., Aug. 27th, 1850.
Five years ago I bought a Gin of Mr. B. Boat
right, and from some deficiency in his whetting
or making the saws, it knapped the cotton sc
that I was disposed to lay it aside, and buy a new
one, but to my great advantage, I employed Mr.
TuasNsa CORLEY to work upon it, and by his
SUPERIOR WHETTING has improved it be
yond my expectation. It makes as nice Cotton
now as any Gin in the State-entirely clear of
knapping. I take great pleasure in recommend.
ing his Whetting and Brush making to the gin.

TOT from the lack of Newspapers in the

a ty-for we feel proud to know that the Press of
South Carolina will compare favorably with that
, of any State in the Union-are we induced to
,s anticipate the success of the
u ILLUSTRATED FAMILY FRIEND.
r But, whilst cheerfully acknowledging the marked
- and unmistakeable talent displayed in the man
s agement of our cotemporaries, and cordially wish
ing them a full support and generous patronage,
we yet think there is an ample field, now unoe
cupied, for the growth and expansion of the paper
which it will be our endeavor to make, not only
2 nominally the Family Friend, but really and sin
cerely the Friend-leal, loyal and true-of every
family in the State.
The fierce and fiery discussion of party poli
tics, the useful, but dry records of commerce and
- traffic, as leading features, we will leave for the
I pens now so active and eloquent in their service ;
11 and whilst we will give to both subjects, as much
space as will be desirable to the general reader,
our greatest object and principal aim will be, the
evolvement, elucidation and exaltation of the
Pure, the Beautiful, the Useful and Instructive,
It in the paths of Morality, Virtue, Literature, Sci
ence, Art and Agriculture.
S The Ideal being more easily comprehended
and more captivating, when combined in some
degree with the Material-we will bring the
- Artist's skillful hand into requisition to illustrate
the mind's conceptions, and to render the Fami

make a physical means adapted to n ,nental end.

ithe actualities of-life, to persevere and be stead
f fast in their strivings omward and upward to
wards the goal of their hopes, has in all ages
1 and in all countries, been considered an object
-worthy of the noblest ambition. To effect ends
so desirable, what means can be imagined more
likely to prove efficacious, than would familiarity
with the painful struggles undergone, the pri-:a
tions borne, the diffieulties overcomo by men,
now living, who have distinguished themselves,
- either as Scholars, Statesmen, Politicians, Jurists.
Physicians, Divines, Authors, A rtists, Mer

the house situated between Mr. BavA4's Store
and the Court House.
My STOCK, consisting of all the varieties
usually found in a Village Retail Store, has been
recently purchased in Charleston, from Houses
that import their Goods, principally, direct from
Europe. And I flatter myself, that an ex
perience of five years in an Importing and Job
bing House in Charleston, together with other
facilities, has enabled me to get a STOCK of
GOODS, that will, in point of SrYLE, and PRIcE,
compare favorably with any Establishment in the
place. Persons wishing to purchase Goods for
CasH or on a credit until first of January next,
will loose nothing by giving me a call.
A small share of patronage is carnestlysolicited.

Those who have used the various preparations

Er~xoaE, BURKE Cv., Dec. 22, 1850.
Ma. J. E. Maasnar.,-Dear Sir : In comjy1i
anee with your request, I make this simple state
ment of facts. My boy Daniel stuck a thorn ini
his foot about the first of at June, the thorn
was extracted, and no more thought of it for 15
or 20 days, his foot then began to swell, and in a
fewv days it was opened. It discharged a large
quantity of matter. The discharge continued
for eight days, and then ceased. His foot then
re-commenced swelling and extended up his leg,
thigh, and hip, with violent pain. H~e then be.
gan to spit from his lungs matter similar to that
discharged from th~e abscess on his foot. 1 then
called in medical aid, and from the remedies used,
he was alternately better and worse for eight or
ten weeks. During this time a large abscess
formed upon the hip, the discharge was large,
and as soon as It eased, a general swelling of his
leg, thigh and breast commenced, which was very
hard to the touch. and at times experienced mueh
difficulty in swallowing. Medical aid seemed of
no further avail. and was discontinued.. I-'then
had reconrse to'your "Magical Pain Eradicator."
In forty-eight hours, from the time I commenceud
its use, his foot began to soften ; the swelling on
his hip and breast subsided, and I ama pleased to
say he is nowto ceiL.
[ again used your remedy in a esse of Neu
ralgia, with great success, giving imnmediate re
lie~f. I have tried it also for Tooth-A che, with
my youngest child, with entire success.
From the success I have had in the use of
your " Magical Pain Eradicator," I have nohesi
tation in recommending it to the pu'blic.
Yours truly,
W. W. HUGHES."
The above statements of the use of "Mjar
shall's Magical Pain Eradicator," are known by
mec to be true.
