July 17 26 PROSP]9CTUS OF THE9 ILLUSTRATED FAMILY FRIEND, A NEW PAPER Zor the Zireside, the Parlor# and the Loisure loment, TO BE PUBLI5nBD aff so hdi Late Editor of the Laurenaville "Herald," Author of " The Slaver," " For'ard Aft," - " The Ocean Born," c., 4&c. N OT from the lack of Newspapers in the Palmetto State, nor from their want of abili ty-for we feel proud to know that the Press of South Carolina will compare favorably with that of any State In the Union-are we induced to anticipate the success of the ILLUSTRATED FAMILY FRIEND. But, whilst cheerfully acknowledging the marked and unmistakeable talent displayed in the man agement of our cotemporaries, and cordially wish ing them a full support and generous patronage, we vet think there is an ample field, now unoc cupied, for the growth and expansion of the paper which it will be our endeavor to make, not only nominally the Family Friend, but really and sin eerely the Friend-leal, loyal and true-of every family in the State. The fierce and fiery discussion of party poli ties, the useful, but dry records of commerce and traffic, as leading features, we will leave for the pens now so active and eloquent in their service ; and whilst we will give to both subjects, as much space as will be desirable to the general reader, our greatest object and principal aim will be, the evolvement, elucidation and exaltation of the Pure, the Beantiful, the Useful and Instructive, in the paths of Morality, Virtue, Literature, Sci ence, Art and Agriculture. The Ideal being more easily comprehended and more captivating, when combined in some degree with the Material-we will bring the Artist's skillful hand into requisition to illustrate the mind's conceptions, and to render the Fami ly Friend as nearly perfect as it is possible to make a physical means adapted to a mental end. In every number, therefore, we will give, in ad dition to a large amount of original reading mat ter from the pens of WRITERS OF ACENOwLEDGED PowER AND Gasus, at least Four Handsome, Pertinent, and Ele gantly executed Engravings. To stimulate the y.ung to renewed exertions in pursuit of knowledge, fame and fortuno-and to enourage those who have already entered upon the actualities of life, to persevere and be stead tast in their strivings onward end upward to wards the goal of their hopes, has in all ages and in all countries, been considered an object worthy of the noblest ambition. To effect ends so desirable. what means can be imagined more likely to prove efficacious, than would familiarity with the painful struggles undergone, the prira tions borne, the difficulties overcome by men, now living, who have distinguished themselves, either as Scholars, Statesmen, Politicians, Jurists, Physicians, Divines, Authors, Artists, Mer. chants, Mechanics, Military men, or Agricultu rits. Consequently, _as a new, and we think very valuable feature, we will give in every issue. A CoaaceT LiEB.ass or sons PROMINENT Sourra Casor.NUa, with an authentic biographi cal sketch. These are brief, very brief hints, at the inten tions and purposes of the IrLLUeraATEn FAMILYv Fxsx-the narrow limits of a Prospectus will ot permit us to malke them more full; but scant as they arc, we trust they are ample enoughi to convince evcIygean~dld and intelligent person, that though we. idiend not to boast, we design publishing a paper that will be worthy -ot a liberal support.TR S As it is our intention to maske the Family Friend a permanent publication, upon which the riends who aid it now. in its infancy, may look with increasing pleasure as it improves with ears-everything connected with its mechanical arrangement will be of the best quality.. The amily Friend will be issued weekly--printed n a large imlperial sheet of fine white paper, with beautiful, clear type; and will be furnished o sueribers at $2 per annum: one dollar to be paid on the receip~t of the first number, and one dollar at? the expiration of six months. 0i- P. W. P. BUTLER. May 29, tf 19 Ice ! Ice ! T HE SUESCRIBER possesses a Receipt to enable any person to make Ice. in any cli mate, with but little expense or trouble. The process is simple, and can be accomplished by the most limited understanding, so as to produce from even warm water, in the hottest elimate, a PURE ICE, equal in every essential to that formed by natural causes. Theluxury of always having at one's will, in the heat of summer, a pure and delicious Tee, will readily be conceded ; and its advantages, in cases of sickness cannot be too greatly prized. By this same process warm water can be rendered delightfully cold in about 5 minutes, and ice creams, with many other luxuries, can be made in from 10 to 20 minutes. The following notice of this great discovery is taken from the New York Sun: "A REAL Luxuav.-Dr. James R. Wilning ton produces, by an artificial process, pure and solid ice, from water, in the heat of summer, in less than half hour. And he can render a bar rel of water as cold as ice itself in a very few minutes. This discovery must be of immense value to all living South." TEaxs.-This receipt, which contains full in structions for m-akin Ice and Ice creams, cooling water, and numerous other useful matters will be forwarded to or&er for Two Dollars, by ad dressing Da.
