-This question isthe caption of the leader
-in the lst Southern Patriot, which lender is
the most falsome laudation of the Union,
"the glorious Union," that we have ever
read, east, west, north orconith. The Pat riot
calls the Union our federal mother. Hear
the glorifications of that jonrnal:
".'his federal mother of ours has ext ended
our domain froi Georgia- to the Pacific
OCean. - She has added to' the inheritance
we already possessed the lands of Florida
and Louisana, the broad domains of Texas,
New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and California.
She has extended our commerce over every
sea, and converted the wilderness into towns
and cities and luxuriant fields! She has
secured to us the enjoyment of civil and
religious libierty, and under her strong and
powerful arm we rule and govern ourselves
" rhisis the mother whom the secession.
ists would strike to the ground, and revel
over her mangled and bleeding corpse."
No. sir Patriot, this federal mother has not
done -all these things; or rather she has done
more. While she got her Southern sons to
pay more than half of the money, and to
spend many lives in winning most of the terri
tories-above enumerated, she cheated them
out of their share of the inhieriume. In
New! Mexico, Oregon. Utah and California
they cannot set their foot, for the purpose
of converting the wilderness. Not only .so,
she came to them with the sword in one hand
and the. purse in the other, and told them
they must give up half of Texas for the coin
in her purse-most of it their own hard
earnings-or she would take it by the sword.
.She-has killed, by her injustice, her terma
genev, her besottedness with the lust of
powr, the remaining sparks of filial affection,
and, all the seessionists propose to do, i. to
takecenre of themselves hereafter. Glorious
federal mother, trul! Citizens of Carolina,
are you.prepared to'join in the preans of the
Patriot. inits idolatrous worship ?-South
Carolinian.
