The proceedings consequent upon the deafth f Senator Elmore will induce the necessity of exteznlifil the recess until Tuesday or Vedncsday next, to enable the oflicers of the louse to complete the arrangements of the hall forthe summer. GREAT Loss or LIFE.--A despatch from t Loiis,28th ult.to the Baltim'ore San, gives he subjoined particulars ot' another tei-rible, steamboat disaster: A frightful steamboat accident took Place this evening. The steamer St. Louis col lapsed two flues, three miles below the city, at quarantine. A frightful scene ensured the shrieks of the wounded and dying were most heart-rending. From all the information whicb could be gathi-ed in the confusion, it appears, that '.5 lives, were lost, and 40 persons wounded. About half the number of persons sealed will certainly die. The sufferers mostly were deck passengers. ADDSO~ The deceased had beeifolr abont two weeks1 somewhat indisposed, but a day or two ; before his death seemend better, and was well enongh, in 'company with a friend, to, visit his saw umill, about ten midles fromt homxe. Hie returned late in the aifternioon, anid shortly after~ tea, was suddenly 'tricken down by the~ hand of death, Hie diced of an affection of the heart. Captain ADDrSON was born within a few miles of this town on the st .\pril 1788, anid was raised in the District. His father, Mr. Jlos~ru Aiuersoy, died whilst his son was an inmtt, and his early training was left to, his pious mother, whose maiden name was Bauws, a lady of stroiig mind and exellenit qualities. The meaiis of the family denied to the sian any thing miore thatn a mlere conunon English education, a result to be lamented, for if his high natural tilents had been improved by eduention, there is little risk in say. ig that lhe would have niade a strong and deep ipression on the age in which he lived. With his limited education hotwever, improved by read 'ig and elose observation. C.apt. ADDIsoN ren dered himself a prominent nman and highly useful itizen. Ihis mind was emiinemuly practical anid this quality was signally exhibited in all his ailhirs. Ihis mewmory was uiiusumily retentive, and to a strong and vigorous judgmniit hec united great timess and etnergy. Dutring the War of 1819. thtrough the kind interference oif the late Mr. CAr.nomes, lie ob. tained the commission of 1st Lieutenant in the U. S. Army ; was stationtedl for a year or mnore with his Regiment near Chuakston, andl for the greater part of that tilme, acted as Adjutant of the Regiment. Auonmsos, united hittself with the aptist Church of this iacae, of which he ret ed an active and 'onistet' mjembiher until his death. In all the measures of the Ch'urch fort promoting the cause of virtue, he took a pronni nent-and liberal part.
