From the Athens Whig. THE CHRONICLE & SENTINEL-. For many months past we have studi onely abstained from any cotments on what we, in common with the people of both parties in this State, have considered he very extraordinary course of the Chronicle & Sentinel, on a question of inflaitely greater moment to the people of the Sou'th than. noy of the partizait issues that .have agitated the public miod for many years past. We had hoped, and till hope, that the editors of the Chronicle, f their position has been misundeistood, will take an early opportunity of setting the-matter right-though we must confess that an attempt to do so in a late number of that journal has done more to fasten the suspicion of at least indif'erence, if not nc tual hostility to Southern institutions on the part of that paper, which has been aining strength for the last year or two. hat we may not misrepresent our cotem orary we give an extract from his late rticle "defining his position." "-Nothing is more indefinite tian the eles and hounds of what Congress or any islative body may or inay not couslitu. nally do. Acts the most unwise, unjust d injurions to the State or nation, may l be within the letter of the Constitu. a. It is bet-ter policy to oppose a had easure, such as we regard the Wilnot roviso, whether applied to Oregon or alifornia, on the score of its injustice and nral demerits, rather than the ground t it violates the Constitution." Now, what are we to infer from this? oes the Chronicle believe the Wilmot roviso constitutional, and object to it lely on the ground of its "injustice and eneral demerits." Will he answer this ategorically ? We should have taken no notice of this hatever but for the fact that the Chronicle aving been regarded heretofore as a lead. ng organ of our party, its editorials have een quoted by the Democratic press as diience that the Whig party of Georgia unsound upon - this subject. No%% in iew of this fact, as well as the importance f all dissensioni in our ranks being heaed efore the gubernatorial canvass begins, ill not the editors of the Chronicle at ace perceive the necessity of "showing heir band" satisfactorily to the people of 'eorgia on this momentous question, re embering that "those w ho ,are not for us e against us " "hile on this subject it may be well nough to remark for the benefit of Dem. acratic editors that a very respectable -por ' of i-Whigs of Georgia do not feel - iecommitted to the. doctrine to rieen.-course of the Clronicle ie n V tio offered among I , at the Whig iIledeeville, .nously Whig one he all be oft set ch Ily athas weState Gioilers. North - this subject, we y elieve, for the esihi'ourcednttryand our party, h liie thus og'deferred it (although ~d$ 6me of the best Wh'ligs in the tatifro adopt this course long ago) 'i the ope that the'editors of the Chrom e & Sq4inels nld satisfactorily define their posttiou; but they having signtally failede in their recent attempt to do so, and~ by their explanation left the public siill in doubt, we feel now entirely justified in calling upon them to know where they stand. "CitivarY or SourtI CAaoi~tNA." Tho Rutherford Banner has an article allecting to ridlicule the "Chivalry of Souith Carolina." This we think is in exceedinig bad taste, and mcst recoil uJpon its author Whatever nmay be the political errors of South Carolina. no one can deny that she has sufficiently vindicated her character for genuine chivalry. If hter services in our revolutionary struggle are forgotten, the blood of~ her sons so freely poured ot on ibe plains of Mlexico, comes up afresh to attest hternic and patriottic devotion. "Animia opibusque parati" is her proud motto. Who wtill say that she has ever disgraced iti We hope then, to hear no more "mecaningless and contemtible twad die" in ridicule of her chivalry.-Licoln ( N. C.) Courier. -SAtTA AtYA KicxtNo.--The Delta says : Santa Anna has re'ently fulminated from his retrea t at Kingston, Jamnaich, an elaborate repily, in a volume of 300 octavo pages, to the accusations of treason brtaght agaitnst him in Congress by one of the representatives, Senor Gatnboa. The wvily, ex-President makes out, as usual, a good ease; and showa, apparenily, that his efforts during the recent wvar were fruitless, owing to the want of co-operation onibe part of the government, the lack of funds, circumstances over which he had no control, etc. He enters into a anto biogrtaphtical accourrt of all his exploits, hardships and reverses, and evidently aims more at mnaking~ an impressiotr for the fts ture than at v'ndicating tbepast. 4PorotNrBENTS.-The folfowing ap pointments are said to have beeni made, but are not as yet officially annou nced, viz: Ahbbot Lawrence as Minister to Eng land; Williami C. Who is Lewis Kossuth, the Regent of H1ungary, and her master spirit in these grave days of his country ? Kossuth was born in 1806; his father, of old Hungarian nobility (for what Hun garian is not 7) was very poor and support ed himself as Clerk to some fellow.noble man. Lewis went to the University of Pesth, to study Law, in his 16 year. n here his great talents and equally great poverty procirrred him patrons, who fed and cloth ed him. We first hear of him in public, when he at (once distinguished himself in the opposition, as writer against Austria. In IS38 he was arrested ; in 1840 he found ed a paper; in 1844 ie established the general "League %f Defence ;" in 1847 he was elected member of thelDiet; in 1848 lie placedi himself at the head of ti Anti Austrian movement, became Mini.br, and is now virtual Regent of Hungary, show ing equal military, political and revolu tionary sagacity. Kossuth is a consummate master of the sword and pen. If the ques tion be to fill his hearers with ethusiasn an'd to rouse bis fellow-.lungarians, he can be passionate. poetic, pompous, as the occasion muy require, while there is per haps no terser writer and closer readAner when facts, numners and statistics from the substance. lie possesses a thorotgh knowledge of the philosophical and poi dlve Law, and is mastr of an extenstve encyclopedical knowledge. His organ of speech is strong and very sonorous. His mastery 'of the languages is wonderful. He addresses with equal efTect the Magyar in Hungarian ; the Croat in Slavonic; the German in German ; and lately when it was tiecessary to fire the Clergy for the Hungarian cause, he addressed to Synod of the Catholic Priests in Latin. in such a mannertliat they ivere filled with patri otic ardor. Ilis tife'wasdescrihed bty that executioner. Prince. Windisclgraiz, in an order to the police to tcatch her, among other things thus: "She is an elegant weman,, of a high degree ofcultivation, speaking French. English, German, Sela vonian and Wallachian as fluently as iungarian." Kossuth ltas travelled in Germany, France and England. [ie is tall, htand some and of imposing appearance; his head is of an oriental enst The greatest day of Kossuth's life was perhaps, when in at inspired speech lie demanded oftle Hungarian Diet 200.000 men and 42,000,000 guilders, and the whole Assembly rose and exclaimed: "We give them!" When he was informed that Russi a was going to. send an army to assist the As irians. he quietly replied : "Then i iarch all Poland against Russia." Lewis Kossuth seems to he the model of a statesman in a national revolution of a modern vast country. The difficulties which ie has to overcrne are immense; for never before had a patriot to unite, in n period of revolution. tich discordent ele mets as the Magyar. German, and Sela vnic populations in H ungary are-t yet his master mind and high soul do not only seem to rule, but to rouse, impel and inspire Ieg.all fir the same great end. L. TuE Cn sVAsSE.-The New Orleans Bulletin er Friday says : We learn with deep regret. that all at tempts to stop thte Sauve crevasse have been abandoned, and we presume that wye tust now wait the fall of the river before we can be relieved from the orerflow in the rear of thte city. Fortunately the pros pects for this are at present favrable, as the river is steadily receding. and the ad vices frm above are, that it is fallinig along its whtole coturse, and no intelligence ot any raise being on its wany down. . in the course of the present month, htowever, we shall certainly have the Missouri flood, which, from the great quantittes of snow which fell during the last winter, along the upper portion of the stream atnd its irmb. utaries, wvill probably aive us a more than usial heavy raise. When thtis is once downt upon us. it will again fill tup the banks of thte Mississippi, and thtere will then he no permatnent fall of the lattet until Atgust or September. Under these cir cumstances. we would suggest the pro priety ofmtuaking all the neeful preparatory arrangemetnts for renewing the work for stopping the crevasse, so soon as thte pire. sent til of the river has p)rogessed to such further eatent as will justify a new effort. The river htas already faillen two feet and a half since the crevasse first opened, and if it recedes three or four feet more, of wviich there is every prospect, the work which now is so ditficult or imupossible, wouldi be comparatively' easy, and thte rech could lbe readily repaired before the Missouri raise would be down, atnd thte citizets save somre two or three monthts of suffering and loss. TmF. OvE.RFLow.-The trmant wvnters of -Father NM ississpri" continue to encrouch upon onr city, and the song ouf the gnndo iler, or rather the shtout of tlhelmunicipality boatmnen, is fast nearing St. Charles street. The inundated streets present ntovel and exching scences, and. urart from the'mel anholy reflections caused by the disastr rus state of affairs thtere is much to amuse. All sdrt's of acquatic cotivevatnces are brotght in requisition, and these are nowv to be seeni at all corners waiiting to convey passengets through avenues where cabs and carriages were wont to roll. Through many of the streets, however, the authort ties hnavc caused guntwales or plank walks to be constructed, which prove a great convenience .ft was impossible, in the haste in which they were put up, to make them firm. The traveller is obliged tostep with great caution, atnd even thten primly dressed gentleman are occasionally seen to disappear for a time betteath the dirty flood. Witht the fine prospect of stopping the crevasse, however, wve have reason to hope that this state of affairs will not last much longer-N. 0. Pic.
