Our Old Pai'netto Tree.
'Our green flag be!in no Easterngem,
It h'oasts no shining gold.
No Oedeiin peRl r- found within
l iqsimply waving field.
Anid vet 'ti- brigit and beautiful,
And yet 'ii fair and free ; -
There':r not a prouder flng thain this,
Oar old Palmetto Treo.
When oi our-shores the billows dash,
Our Southeru bauners wave
On every sea-breeze proudly floats
. The standard of the brave.
A thousaod. fgags wave 'oer our land,
A ihousand wildly free
'Twas Nature's.uoble gift to us,
Our old Palmet to Tree.
Apd.when in Freedom's holy cause
A Somhern band arose, .
Our old.Palmetio lent its aid,
Agninst our country's foes.
Then when the foreign foe had fled,
And victory crowned us free,
-Ariund us waved exu!tin'aly.
Our old Pedetno Tire.
And after yir5 f ,omilg peace,
War drums pealtd th,-ir rattle.
-Startliig the soltier-frotn his home,
Calling him to batle, -
They gatiie-red qeek antd strong aTound
The-stanuard of* the free.
And to the Weqt Ihey .marched beneath
Our old Palmeito Tree.
To a hbstile land. they marched away.,
. .Thai bnuner at heir head,
Which flaunted in the face of J'es,
B.ut-drooped .ipon our dead.
For what more fitting pull was there
To the soldier brave and free,
Thai'the' proud emblem or bis home
6A old Parnetto Tree!
We love the glor'us '. Stars and Stripes,"
Wev've proved it with our blood;
Long may they wave upon the land,
And o'er the swellintg flood.
-But on our sea-girt shore there fiats
A banner bold and free
Nor stars nor stripes we love so'well
As our 'almetto Tree!

"DONT CROWD.T IE MONKEY."
Some time since we fonnd ourself on
board the cars between Union~Point and
Atlanta, in Georgia, w6th prehaps the
greatest croVd inaginable' Almong the
number was a little Frenchman, en
route to New Orleans. - His' dress was
scrupulously neat, even unto dandy-ism,
and he appeared to be as careful of it as
if it had been "real Califrornia." He
belonged to .thi't unfotLunate class Uf
individuals who think they are "thte
observed of all observers," and conse
k quently, if any one laighed or whispered
~in-the-eor,- lttle Frenchman imagin

puny of young men bound for California,
were also on boatd the cars. They
were a -dashing, devil-may-care set of
b'hoys, the whole of them, but one par
ticularly appeared to love a joke. He
had several times, in. a laughine way,
told his comtades; whetn any of thema
annoyed him in any way, "not to crowd
the monkey." He noticedl thait tImlittle
Frenchman looked very uneasily toward
him, whenever he muade. u~e of his ez

made.known his intention- to one ortwo
of his friends, wvho quickly entered into
it, glad of an. opportunity to wvhile away
the tedium of travelling.
Our wag saw that the whispiering had
awakened the suspicions of his victim,
who was in a- state of exritemneent. Now
was his timte, and-ib a voice loud enough
to be heard all through the car, hesaid
"Comre, boys,.don't crowd the meon

who were "into the'secret," looked at
the Mortsieur and laiughed. -This wvei

"The gentleman did not allude to'you,

"it is a common expression, and he pro.
