EDIToR-I beg a. corner of your sheet to express the feelings of gratification that I have lately felt on visiting.-a South Carolina Cotton Factory.- I allude to Graniteville, a new establishment just put in operation in EdgefieJd -District. Three years ago, all around there was a willderness of poor, oncultivated -land, Uith a small but durable stream tumbling over the lowest chain of granite rock in the State, in a wild waste .of useless wa ter. - Now the stream issubstantially lammed, and the water brought down in a canal about .a- mile, formng a 40 feet head. Here istands the Factory 350 feet long, asitl 5) feet wide 2 stories high, and built of solid blue granite, dressed in blocks, forming-one of the handsomest building in the-South. 'his-is to contain 9,245 spindles, when nl in operation, with 800 loons, which will' he enough to weave -all the yarn. This will consume 10 bales of Cotton a day, and. turn out 10 to 12,000 yards or 30 and 36 shirting and drilling, and require 300 operatives. By the arrangement of the maehiney, The Cotton comes in upon a railway from 'the store house in the pickersroom ar one end, and goes out cloth at the other, and is taken into another.store house, all in the same yard, but detached from each other to make all more secure against fire; Most of the machinery is now in opera 'tion by "raw hands," from the piney woods population, under charge of ex perienced overseers. and working mostly by the job, or piece price, and. average $3 a week all-round, including men, girls and boys. The village contains beside the factory -and store house, 83 dwellings, a hotel, saw-mill, school house, and two of the n'eatest little Gothic churches ever built. Taken altogether, I venture to asset t that a more beautiful manufacturing village cannot be found in the world. The machinery is all of the latest im proved -kind, and seems more like things of life, than dumb tnelnes. The whole establishment, operatives .included, 'is a pattern~ of neutness. The cost, including 9000 acres of and another inill site, hus.been $300,000.. . If we are -not much deceived in'our expectations. the name of James L. Pickerel will be famous amongst she great inventor! of the United States. We :h all endeaver.to obtain from Mr. Picker el such .a ilescription of his inventiou as will be intelhigible to our readers. It has been frequently stated in tbe Southern papers, that Gen. Devereux, of North Carolina. raised the largest crops of -- Corn in the United States, averaging about 100,000 bushels. But Cast's Advertiser says,,we have no comprehtension -of the growth and products oif the West. andsays that yacob Strawn, of Illinois, raisaed more than 400,000 bushels of Corn in 1547, tlte produc of 6000 acres. R.N In consequence of the presence of Cholera at Nashville, Tennessee, at which place the Cotivention was to be held this year, the brethren of that City have consented that the meeting shall he held on the 23rd instant in Charleston, S. C. on condition that the next meeting shall be held in Nashville in 1852. 1 have the concurrence of the Board of Foreign Missions in the pioposed change and the acquiescence -or the Board or Domestic Missions. And my Circular will appear accordingly in a few days. Meantime I inlorm you of the change as coistitutionally made, and af rectionately urge upon you, the importance of a large attendance, as the state of our Mission affairs, and the proposed confer ence on the subject of a General 1beolog ical Institution for the South, will require your presenc'e in full meetings Affectionately your brother and fellow laborer.
