ACCOMPLISHMENTS. tin the Irand defect of the science of female education in this country that it is too much the science of mere behavior. It aims too much at mere accomplishments, ieglects that which is lastingly useful, and tei4s to produce -a heartless, artificial character. It is true there are endless "'olo. gies" in which the ladies now delighi; plenty of arts and sciences which fashion insl4t they must be taught, and of dialect which they love to patter; but it is show, not for service. we fear, that these things ate learned. With all our respect for them. we must say % e deem the moulding or the heart, the education of the character, to he inuitely more important. The mothers of the most celebrated men have been far more remarkable forstrengt's of character than for genius or acquirement-a strength bfrlharacter which is not itrompatilble with feminise softness of feeling. This education of character does not at all pre elude intellectual educatiho; we only ask that women should learn to use their ininds as well as their memories, and the heart keep up that "communication with ihe head, which in modern belles, is as irregular as the transmission of the mail." All systems. however, by which young Women are taught to move their limtus ac. ohing to the rule of art. to enter a room with a studied diflilenceand toseat ihetm selves its a t-hair u ith measured action anti studied grace. should be 'stterly exploded; for they are only calculated to keep per petually to their minds the degrading idea that they are preparing for the great mar. ket of the world. Real propriety of de neanor springs.only from the nind; lash, i-mahle schools teach but its counterfeit, while tley forbid to be itagenuous. In such places the whole of early lire is spent in getting rid of nature. antid in the acquire. ment of artifice, till the heart and mind are no uore like that for which they were at first intended, than the tree which some 'lahorious cii has trainied into the shape or a peacock is like that which has grown up in all the vigorous luxuriance of its native forest. Some minds there aro by nature so strong and elastic as to rehound from site pressure of such an education into the region of natural enthusiam aid innocent true-heartedness, but the mass are so moulded ih.at they are but posthoard. whelehone and buckram thinge, creatures of puffery and artifice, whose every wo-d, look and act, every thing they do, is but a trick of custom. Well has it been said of one who "finished her education" at such an establishment, th',t "'A hen she marries her days of happiness' are gone.' The transient ornaments of youth pass a wav, and an solid aitainment remains to supply their place. Neglected time returns to take long years of vengeance for the .hotre that have heen lost, She har learnel no thing. and she is nothing. In the -neun. time hee husband wakes to see the truth; he may not use her ill, he may not reproach her; but he may antl mtit reaard her at insect buzzing over hiis path. adding thing to his happsinesa. sometimee hardly tractinsg hisntice, never adinting h.-r a cotinsellior in his plaints., often morti when they go i0O cormpnnny. nnd never rused; -or -insetested, in the leaet itegre,. ben they are left altne. Every mail irings us additinal evidences of the succes-t and enterpribe of the tewsiairerestailishmtietis of the South. We are rej-oiced to see this state of thi'gs in our own State poarticular. ly; au the iminy- well conditeied p~apers now established in the upper Districts must be of immense advatage in the peo. ple. There ik no branch of istoltry-ag ricultural, coimmercial, air mechatnical but muost be invariably lieneitted inder the influence of these presses. Light and knowledge-education, morals and vir-ue. must ever be the cocoitants of a n eli subtained press atnongst a people. Had we space to enumerate, we might mention the papers we allude to; but we comlre, hend all when we say of the newspaper press of South Carolina, that, in point of ability, correctness of tone, and sentiment and the successful pursuit or this honora ble vocation, in all respects, the newspaper press of this State ii unsurpassed. South Carolina, by her devotion to De. mocratic principles-by her unwavering defence or State Riglts-and by the ex alted patrint-<m of her -tatestmen. unpolni. ed by the debasing itteences of party trifie -has frequently beensneered at anil hlda up to: ridicnle by party backs aud politi cal brawlers orf her sister -td:te4. But lhe flin.g4 iarty ritialdrv, or the p ihry exhibt iions aif envenotted spite, sm toften hurled at their noble little States, find on symrupa. t iiing heart or pen among her editaorial corps. They are met with scorn. and re pelled with a consciousness of integrity of principle, which, in too tmany infiances, is mt.nifestly watting in their as~ailants. We chalenge the btrictest scrutiny uand most rigid critical examintion. when we assert that the press of South Cartalina stands unsurpassel in every qoality % hich tends to elevate the noral<. augrmet the lappinese, or preserve the ittlelietdence of the peoplje whom they represent. Well, then, for our conclusions. The people of this State should sustain first their own newspapers. T-, use a commn saving, they tnay go further and fare n orse. Their city, towtt. and district presses shonil he liberally pairotised. haeatse the news papers of Sauth Carola are a unit-ine and indivisible-int defence of the rights, interest, and intititutionq of tle South.
