THE MISSISSIPPI. The New Orleans Dilta, of 'the 16th inst., says:--"We yeste'rday took a ride aling the river as far as Carrolton, and -found the Levee in pretty much the same condition it was ten days or a fortnight since. In fact, for that distance there does not appear to have been imminent danger at any time, for wherever. the Levee is weak the batture extends so far out aq to break the force of the current, and si ill the water.before it reaches the embankinent. Above Carrollton, as far as'Mr. 1-oey's premises. the part where the.greatest dan ger was apprehended, is now deemed se cure, since the construction of the back levee. In :he stage of the water there has been no material change since the ri;vcr reached!its maximum height. It varies aith the wind-one Pday fatling a few in ches, and the next rising to its former level. On Wednesday, in consequence of the lulling of the southerly winds, which had prevailed, it fell but a very few inches, but a fresh breeze springing up from the same direction yesterday, it again resumed its beight. Few fear an overflow or seri ous character; bit when the river begins to fall a land-slide may occur. The Vic%sburg Sentinel of the 13th inst. says: "The river was on a stand or rising very slowly yesterday. Boats from above report the Mississippi rising very rapidly at St. Louis. Tiie Arkansas is rising rapidly. It is theopinion of many that the water will be stili higher than it has been, and'that no cotton will -be made on the ,river plantations." The Memphis Enquirer of the 10ih says: -We learn that all the rivers above are on the rise; the Missouri particularly. The Mississippi is rising very rapidly here. We learn from below that strong apprehensions were entertained of a.most disastrous over 10w'. ' Breakers had occurred In the levee -at dif'ereit points. and some parts of the 'Countfy w6re already submerged. This new rise going down upon the other before -it bas had time to run of, we fear will prove awfully destructive." MRS. MADtsoN.--Tl maiden name of this eminent lady was 'Psyne. Death'i search of his prey could not have seized upon 'ne whose disolution would have been prodtretive of more universal sor row and regret than did the death of F'RAN CES ADDISON, Mhich occurred in this Dis trict on the 12th inst., at the residence of her aunt, Mrs. Matilda Addison, in the 19th year of her age. -The deceased met with the misfortune to loose her mother whet but an infant, and for the last few years of her life she resided with and was under the charge and direction of her I aunt, and truly was she an affectionato and obedient niece. She has left behind her to mourn their irreparable lois, a father, broth er and two sisters, and though their loss be a heavy one-if the iemirks'of a dying-subject are at all relvable-eqdally.great must be her'gain by the eichan'gi. She was but in the bud of life when overtaken by death, still she had been a member of the.Baptist Church some year; and notwithstanding she wiasjof a lively and an agreeable turn and tempera ment she was always disinclined to gb beyond what she regarded the duty of t christian a4id a professed member of Christ's'Church. - She spoke frequently of death and its con sequences during her short but severe and painful illness, with a will of perfect .resigna tion and aT assurance of future happiness..
