The pleasant days of CIildhoond, How swiily have they flow , Like young flowers in the m-ildwood, When Antumn winds have blow"; They're gone, they're gone forever, They will no more return, Though lenory hids them in the heart "Like ashes in tie urn. The happy days of childhood, When innocence and glee Withgentle fiiers, lurned the heart To itusic wild and free; They're gone, they're gone forever, Like rivers to tlw main, Their dancing waves of j,y and mirth Will ne'er return again. The hoty days of Childhood, Ere evil thoughts come niear, When in the heart no sin was found, And on the cheek no tear; They're gone, they're gono rarever, Like foot-printison the shore, Washed out by Time's releriless waves They will return tio more. Phe pleasant, holy, happy days, Life's only blossom time, Where are your buds which promise gave Of flowers in Summer's prime ? Though gone, though gone forever, Ye haun the heart and'brain, And Memory keeps ie to anoint Life's after years of pain. AGONG STORY. 've have heard of a funy story told of a young fellow, residing in one of the tobacco growing countries of Virginia, who recently made, his first visit to the capital of the Old D'ptniion," for the purpose of selling his crop, seeing the sights, and rubbing off the rust which his -backwoods "fetching up" had thrown upon his manners. Ile reached Richm6nd about the middle of the fore noon, and was fortunate in selling .his -crop at an advantageous rate, and al most, immediately. Meeting with an old schoolboy, one ifhio had lived in the city long, enotigh to know its ways-he was advibed to take up his lodgings at Boy den's, the crack-house of the place, and thither he went with bag and bag, gage. Just before dinner his country friend -called upon him, and found him comf ort- i^'nlqt a t thle. hear upon di "Sur an app, just col "Ag: "a gla& * -dinr tobacco grower. '-We might as well have it up here,'" wasthe rejoinder. "Good luck-but how are we~ to call for it 1" "Ring'that bell there." "What bell 1" * "Pull that rope hanging there." The. young fellow laid hold of the rope and gave it at jerk, and just at dhat moment the gong sounded for dinner. Never had lie heard such a sound before and the rumbling crash came upon his ear with a report that stunned him, lie staggered back from the rope, raised both hands with horror, and exclaimed : "Great Jerusa, lem, what a smash! I've broken every piece of crockery in the house ! Thecro ain't a whiole dish left!l-You must stick by me, old fel how," addressing his friend-,"don't leav-e me in this scrape, for my whole crop wont half pay the breakage. WVhat did yott tell me to touch that cursed rope for !" But before his friend, who wvas burst ing with laughter, could answer, a ser vant entered the room with "Did you ring the bell, sii I" "Bell! no, d-n your bell-I never touched a -bell in my life. What bell 1 1 nevel- sa w your bell." "Somebody rang the bell of th's room that's certain," continued -the servant. "No they didnt't. There's nobody here ever saw at bell." And then turn ing to his iind, lhe exebMiimed, aside: "Let tis lie him out of it-.! shamnt have a cent left to go home if I pay the entite damage. WVhat do they set such r;is sally traps as that for, to take in folks from the country 1" After at violenit fit of hatughiter, the friend explained that it was only the gong sounding for dinner-a simple summons to "paldk down tn soup," got oon the Chinese lan. They made their way to the dining room, but it was some time before the foung tobacco grower could get over the sttunning and awful effects of that dreadful gong. 'It was a godsend," said he, "that the S crash did not turn my hair gray on the spot." How TO GET A LtFT.-"Praiy," said Mr, ,to- a gentlenian he overtook *on - the road, M'will you h:ave thie com-* -plaisance to take my great coat in your carriage to town ?" "With pleasure, sir, but how'will you ~get it again 1" -"Oh, very easy," re plied the modest applicant ; '.'I shall re main.in it.." .When all mien say you are.as ass, it shig imect bray'. For a period of fifteen years, it ias enjoyed a circu lation, and exerted an influence, not exceed ed it is believed, by any oher Journal in the country. That its interest and usefulness haxe been susiained from year to year, we have the most abundant evidence in its large sales, not witstanding the multiplicity of agri cultural jourials wich have come into exis tence within the past few years. It will be our aim to render it for the future, not only worthy the support of our rural population, but absolutely necessary to all who would keep themselves well informed as to the pro gress of agricultural improvement, both at home and abroad. Keeping constantly in view the great object for which THE CUL TIVATOR was established-' To IarPRoVE THE SOIL AND THE MIND,"-no effort will be spared to fill its pages with such matter as is best adapted to call into action the men. tal and physical energies cf its readers,-to awaken inquiry as to the best and most profi table methods of farming, and to incite to ef forts to carry them into efTect.
