independent. sltonid have spoken out. This cautious avoidance of the Slavery question, is a bad onion for the South. It sets the seal of insoundness upon him, and the impress should be carefully scanned by every man who wishes to see right and jtstice meted out to the Slave holder. There is one featute of his letter which is unmistakeable, and tiat is his devotion to the Whig party. Van the South vote for the man who admits ihat Millard Fillnore, the avowed abolitionist. should be "entitled to the first place on the 'ticket." What say our Democrats to this ? Do they still cling to the delusions, with which the militarv fame of the brave old warrior has enshrouded them ? If this letter doe. tnot wake them up, we know not what can. South Car olina wil! do her duty. For principles she will vote, and if those principles are deserted, she will be funnd asserting, as she ever has done the rights of the South. We value the union. but we value the constitttional rights of the South mure, and hattling for theni, we will do our duty, regardless of pint ty. From the Corespondence of the .M lercury Extract from a letter dated. ., COLUMBIA, Sept. 8, 1848. The State will go for Cass and Butler beyond all question, by an overwhelini,g -majority. Of the District with which I am familiar, you wiay set down Richland as divided. In Suniter all the candidateq are Cass Kershaw do., Orange Parish, do St. Mathew's do. In Lexington there are two candidates for the Senate: one a Tay - for the other a Cass man. The candi dates for the House are all Cuss. In Edge. field all are Cuss. In Newberry all vass, In Laurens all Cass except Col. 'rby. Jo Abbeville the entire Cass ticket sure, through there is a show of orposition. Pen dleton and Greenville will be divided. with a predominance in favor of Cass. In Spartanburg all the* candidates Cass ex cept one. Union all Cass. York do., Chester :o Fairfield all Cass except one who is a Whig, and cetiain of defeat Lan caster all Cass. For the other parts of the State I cannot speak, though our accounts here all agree that there will not be thirt Taylor men in the n-xt Legislature.
