By those who wish for healthy and productive orchards too much'attention cannot be given to the bark -Of their tre~es. We frequ'ntly meet witli fotest trees whose interiot has been aImost entirely destroyed by fire .or decay, aiid wlich yet seem healthy and -flourishing by virtue of a vigorous bark; and any, one who has tried the experi.nPnt must have. observed how. both -shruds and treeq, that have become enfeeebled by age and neglect, can be rejeivenated by attention to their exterior couidition; Ve do not n3an to recmmeud to any to procure old or large trees for his orchard in place of young ones, but if lie has an old apple tree worth improv ing, by removing t'ie outside of the whole bark on it late in the spring he will find that lie has given to the tree much additional vigor. Upoa smaller trees and shrubs, a liberal scraping with a trowel and an application of -ashes and water will have the same effect. When trees grow in- grassy lmnd, a pretty good way to keep them from being sod-bound is to remove in the fall the sod for two. or three feet around the tree, and on this turn about Ijall a whf-el-barrow full of manure ; the winter rains and snow< will wast the strenath of it to the fibrous roots. In the spring the manure may-be- scattered about undor the tree, and in lieu - of it %ubittutte leached ashes. This, beitdes hemng beneficiail to thd tree, prevents the griss from approaching thestenfoif the tree during the summer, and what gra;s grows over the ashes is easily re maved in the fall. I conclusion we- would say, the farmer who cnrrins his horse twice a lay finds him-ielf. abnndantly rewarded for his toil, in 'he i mproved strength and appearance of his animal; why don's lie curry his trees once or twice ,e year, and reap a larger reward for the labor .:td the capital thus invest..d?
