rot: ihe Abbe'rlic banci. UCAM S.LLECK. (Aiken.) Dee. 20. 1846. .u r. Editor-'he Abherille Volunteers alrrived saf--ly at this place last evenine. The volunteers are all well. We will take the cars this muorning at 9 o'clock. Before leavtng our camp, we deemed it due to our fellow citizens uof old Abbeville for the patriotic manner in which they have 40 bountifully supplied the volunteers with money and transportation, to pass the ful lowing resolutions: Whereas the eiizens of Savannah and Saluda Regiments. in their zedl and pa triotism to equip the Abbeville Volunteers, have contributed the handsome sumr of $2080 86 cents. Be it therefore resolved, That the thanks -ot at.e Volunteers be returned to our fel low citizens ihr the praiseworthy manner in which they have aided them in pre'par ation for the Mexican War, and that this act of kindness will serve to keep in re membrance the kind friends we will leave behind us. Resolved, That the thanks of the Volun teers he returned 'to the Loundsville and Willington Bands for their efficient servi ces rendered to the .volunteers while in Old Abbeville. Resolved, That the thanks of the Vol unteers be returned to the citizens of Ah beville village for the hospitable manner in which they have entertained them on Tuesday last; and to those gentlemen who have kindly furnished tents while on our line of march to Aiken. Resolved, That the thanks of the Vol unteers le returned Io the young Ladies of Abbeville village, for the badges they have presented to them ; and in honor to them we pledge ourselves, Ihat these em blems of their purity shall never lie torn from our bosoms by abe baud of our ene my. Resolved. That we, tie Volunteers of Abbeville District, do tender our most heartfelt thanks to those citizens of our District who so disinterestedly presented to us the meains of conveyance from our homes to Aiken-thus lightening our toils. while in the re-ch of their active and helping care. We shall carry to the tent ed field a rememb'rance -tta will nerve us under the toils and dangers of the1 soldier's life. [The following are the names of the gentlemen who furnished the waigons: Dr. Barrett, Col. Sproull, Lynn Morrow, Capt. Larkin Reynolds, .oan Cothran, Esq., Cap'. Irwin, J. F. Watson, Esqr., John Hearst, Dr. Hearst.) Resolved, That we d h.ereby tender our most hearty thanks to the citizens of old EdgefielJ, and particularly of Edge field village, for the very hospitable and highly flattering reception with which we were greeted on our passage through their District. B. W. STEWART, 0. S. The City.-Montgomery never was improving as rapidly as now. Residences. stores, public houseS and buildings of every kind are going up as if by magic. and in all directions. The sound of the hammer, and the hum of inprovemtnts are heard everywhere. The foundation of the large and splendid H. tel about to be erected, is alreadyliaid. ~And the Cap itol, a structure so creditable to the taste that designed it, to the skill ihat executes it, to the city that builds it, and to the State that will receive it, is already in such a state of f'orwardtiess that they are putting the roof upon it. By the close of the spring it is supposed it will be entirely com~pleted. Bitt whait .is better still, the inidication of the times warrants' these imn tprovements. Our streets are filled with 'naggons from every di'rection, and frnm far from us, and every thitng seems to indi cate an interest of businies's. corresponding to the increase of popaultton, and of busi atess facilities. We are a great place-thtat's a fact and "growing nicely.''-Ala. Journal. A New Office in the Army-The WVash iugton corresponadent of the Philadelpia Normh American, who l)seemas to enjoy more facilities for "pie'cking uap" scraps of tnews than almaost any other we know of. gives the following as the outline of a plan, which, he avers, is seriously eutertainted h5 the Admtinistrationi. "It is designed to apply to Cngress for the creationa of an oflice of .Lietenaant General, wvhich is to lie conaferred upon the Hont. Thomas lI. Benton. This ranak; unknown to our service, haut in Europe understood, I 'selieve, to rd6present majes ty, will-devolve upon ha the supreme commaand and the pilan of operationas. "After the takinag of Vera Cruz, which is not doubted, the alhree divisions of the army, from Tampico, Vera Cruz, and whatever point (:ien, Taylor's force' will have reached, will be ordered to advanace and concentrate tin the city of Mexico. rTere assemtbled. the Lieutenaant Genieral will assume the civil funactionas of a Corn. missioner, authorized to propose teroris of. peace and to negotiate the basis for a treaty. Such Is the skeleton of a plait to' bring this war to a close." Explosive Coueon.-ln our accoun: ont the 9th instant of the explosive co'ton, made by Dr. Ames of this city, we inad vertently omitted a part of the process, and nowv give it in full. Cottmn prepared carefully after the formula belowy gives a compound of far greater explosive power than thbat used in the experimenits ma he by Government. T'he Cotton is first soaked in a weak solution of carbonate of potash, washed in clean water and dried., It is then put into a mixture of equal measures of sulphteric and nitric :icid, ini which it should remain from two io five minutes, If arore than th-ree ounces-of the acidi mixture is used at a time the Cottoni is alit to take fire. When the Cottn is remoived it sh uld be put immediately into a basin of clean w a - aer, which should be frequently chan.ed, washing the cotton in it. until the acid taste is'no lotiger perceptible. The acids are prepared itt the Iollowitng manner: The sulphurate acid of commeace is treed fr'om its impuptrities bj distillation. The nitric adid is made in the usual way by distifterg~i equal wetehrs of common eblphuitite id daad nit rate of' potash in a glass'retortf As ihenii-ate of potash corn rhonly'iaitains' a aood dealsof chloride-of sodium, (salt) the first portion of a cidl that enmzes.over contaijiss hydrochlor~ic acid, a ismall pact should therefore be allowed to come over before 'the, receiver is.' applied. "1he noiton thus pre, ared has.at least six ties the explosive force'of gun powder, equal weights of each beiog used.--Mont gomery Journul.
