~ 1IeY n en er rr <EDGEFlELD C. 11. - EDN ESDAY, .SETIEMBER 9, .1816 The Court of Equity adjourned on Saturday last. Several cases were tried, but some of -considerable importance were postponed. Edgefeld Association.-This body will hold its next annual session, on Saturday next at Siloam Church, 5 miles North of Cambridge, Abbeville District. We have heard, that some enquiry was made on Monday last, at this place, whether Mr. Jas. -S. Pope was still a Candidate for the Legisla ture. At the request of some of his friends and tieiglibors, we state that Mr. Pope is still a Candidate, and that lie hiss been prevented by serious domestic affliction, from mingling recently as much with his fellow-citizens as he would have donc under other circumstances. The Edgefield Squadron of Cavalry paraded at this place on Saturday last The companies composing it presented quite a brilliant and martial appearance. We were pleased to see, the troupers vere.very generally, well mounted and handsomely'uniformed. RAs.-Several showers of rain have fallen within the past week in this neighborhood. We fear that the cottou crop has been injured in consequence. Rail road Conrcntion.-It is proposed to hold at Greenville C. H., a Convention from all the Districts interestedin the extension of the Rail road from Columbia to Greenville C. H. At a public meeting in Greenville, resolutions were passed and committees appointed to at tend particularly to this matter. The Degree of L. L. D., was ,:nferred on - Wa. C. Pirs-ros. Presiue.,t of South Carolina College, at the late commencement of Har ward Liiversity. The Degree of N. A. L. D. Doctor-of Art, Nature aid Laws, was recently conferred by Yule College, on Professor Morse. We never heard ofsuch a degree before, lbu, it is said to be quite an appropriate one to con fer on such a tan as Professor Morse. The literary contents, original and selected, are generally excellent, ai well adaipted to tlie alass of rea' ders for whom theC journa! is parrticuilarrly de' signed On our first patge will be fonard an ex-I tract from the Magtzine.. Advantages of the. Magntetic Tceleraph.-A cotempjorary says, that passengers who takes thre New York boaits at Albany, find theirselves forestalled in the selection of berths, state rooms, &c.. by the passen'gers fromt Bulfalo, atrcut *three htundred miles distant, wlin engage them *through the Margnetic Telegrapba. Rooms 'int * ew York or Baltimore catn be readily secured by Phriladelhians. by means of the Te-legrapht, before reachinrg those cities! This is all very -good, but something better than this can lie said of the telegraph. WVe have seen it stated that a couple of lovers, to wvhose marriage ob -jection had been made, recently stationed :.he.niselves at thre two ends of a telegraphric K :ine in distanit cities, and were positively mar *Erskine Collegc.-Wve have received the A n' tifual Catalogue of the Officers anid Sturdenits of Erskine College, Abbeville District, for the sission of 1846. Terms and Vacations.-The College year i divided into two terms of five months encdi The first session commences on the first Mon day in November, and closes on the last Wed nesday of March. The second session comn mences on the third Monday of April, and clo ses on the third Wednesday of September. Expenses.-Tuition in the Preparatory Do partmeni, $12 50 per session. Do. in the College classes, $16 per session Boarding, Lodging and Washing, $7 to $; pr morth. Fuel and Light for each room, $8 to $10 pe attum. Contingent expenses, 25 ets. per session. The cost of elan books is inconsiderable, a, they may usually be purchased at secoed hand and sold again at a small discount. This state ment may be sufficient to satisfy engnitici which are freqnently made in respect to thc necessary expenditures of a student at this place. Every one knows that clothing, pocke money, and all matters of this sort, depend en tirely on the indulgence of parents and the ha, bits of their sons. Records.-The absences from recitation, and other delinquencies, are carefully noted by each Instructor, and at the close of each fortnighi are reported to the Faculty; and after inspen. sion, are recorded.together with the delinquent's reason for failure in duty, in a book kept for the purpose. A note of the daily recitatio s of each student is likewis-e made, the degree of tretia bein.: designated by a scale of unnibers. An abstract of these records will be made out and'forwarded to the parent or guardian of each student, at the termination of each session. McDufti.-It is wit i great pleasure, that we copy the sadbjoined, in relation to the Hon. GEoat0E MCDuFFI, from the Coht:ibia Chronicle. Mr. McDue..-The probable resigna lion of Mr. McDuffie of his seat in the Seento, on account of ill health, has been announced in the papers, and speculations have already been indulged in as to his probable successor. In the retirement of Mr. .cDutfie the Senate will lose one of its brightest ornaments, 'and the entire South, as well as our own State, a zeal ous, devoted and powerful advocate. How evar we may have .differed from our dis tinguished Senator on points of policy du ring hie political career, we have never doubted his honesty or patriotic purpo ses, and cannot now refrain from expres sing our high admiration of his character as a man and his genius as a sntaestat, as well as our deep regret for the causes which removes hiru from a sphere he is well calculated to adorn. We wish him mt his retirement renewed health and hap Mr. Elmore'soatne has been announced n a Charleston. paper to fill the vaanrtcy, -hould it oecur; his mantle could not fall on .a more wu fy successor. .
