Hardscra&ble.-The St. Louis New Era gives the liillo)wmg account of an ag ricult raisettlement, known as Hurdscrab File, situated on the waters of the Arau sas river, near the base of the Rocky Mountains: it consists of about 20 families, old trappers and hunters, who have built houses and devoted themselves to agricul ture. They have all Indian nivesof the nake tribe, they being rauch preferred to the Indians of the plains, who are near est to them. They raise considerable :iuamities of corn, which they trade to the Indians for furs, robes and other ar ticles. The Indians parch the corn and bruise and pound it into weal io skin bags, and then make bread of it. The ettlers in Hardscrabble have no mills, cept a few different handmills, wah chich they grind corn fur their own use. These men are very expert riflemen, well practiced in Indian usages and waarfbre' and consider themselves fully competent to defend themselves against all the In dian tribes in that region, if they should be attacked by thetm. They live a rough, Lard, romantic life, but aie hospitable to those who visit them, pi Lass through their settlement. From New Zealand-Dest ruction of the Bay of Islands.-By a letter re,.eived tiou Capt. Jabez I3 Howland, dated Bay of Islands, New Zealand, March 13th, we learn, says the New Bcdford Mercu ry, that the mitives of Nen Zealand had risen upon the English inhabitants of the Boy Islands and completely overpowa red -them. On the 13th march a battle was fought 'between the English and natives in which the former sustained a loss of twenty to thirty killed, and a great many wounded. 'T'he English fled to the ves sels in prt, leaving the town il possession of the natives, who soon teduced it to ashes. A small Euglish sloop of inat was there, %%hI se captain and several men were wounded. An Atmerican sloop of war was also there, but did not inter *ere. Air. Clending, the English consul, w as not injured. Shaw, from Galseston, yes day, we are apprised of the glorious and gratifying fact that the question of annex ation has been finally consumated.
