WASHtNGTUN, D.c,9, 844.
The House did little or nothing to-day;
talked a'gittlu on Mr. Duncan's Election
Bill-referred the President's Message to
the appropriate Committees, &c. The
most imp rtant matter in the House was
the appointment of the Committees by
the Speiker, giving on the Committee on
Foreigao Relations a decided majority to
the frieuids of Texas. So you may expect
duriag~this week a Bill of Resolution from
this Committee annexing Texas to this
Union on the ternis of the Treaty.
A letter in the Ledger states, that Capt.
F.lliott-, who is about returning to Texas,
is instructed by the British Government to
proceed immediately to Texas, and pro
pose and guaranty the Independence of
Texas from Mexico within 90 days, and
is authorized to say that Her lajesty's
Government will appropriate ?100,000 or
6500,000 per annum. for ten successive
years to defray the current expenses of
Government. &c., making $5.000,000,
provided Texas will abandon annexation
with the United States, and enter into a
Commercial Treaty with the British Gov
ernment, admitting British goods free of
duty, and agreeing to charge 20 perct.
advalorem on goods from all other coun
tries.
Commercial Infornation.-We are in
formed tmat 11r. Ogilby, the British Con
sul, ol this city. hs received instructions
from Her Majesty's Government, to grant
certificates of origin for Sugars, the pro
duce of this country intended to be expor
ted to the United.Kirgdomn of Great Bri
~ ar-..an-- hC British possessions, The
duty on Anerican Suaars, by this regula
tion, will be E. 14s. per cwt.. whereas
that trom Cuba, Brazil, &c, imported into
Great Britian, pa; a duty of Z33s. per
cwt. The duty tn Mlolasses will be in
proportion. -Charleston Courier.
Unpleasant rumor-Mormon Massacre.
-The Warsaw (Illinois) Signal, states
that Lyman Wright's party of Mormoos,
having emigrated to Prai-ie du Chien,
made an attack upon a trading statiomn'90
miles above that place, forthe purpose of
rob! ing it. but were hotly recieved. and
four of the gang killed. The remainder
fled. pursued by the exasperated French,
aud Indians, and coming up to the Mor
mons, murdered all they could fiid, we
'know not how many. The rutnor was
giherally believed at Nauvoo.
Mr. Green Secretary of . Legation to
Mexico, passed through this city yesterday
(says the Mobile Commercial Advertiser.)
from Vera Cruz, via Galveston and to
New Orleans for Washington city with
despatches for our government from Mr.
Shannon.
He brings tidings, as we learn, of stir
ring interest. The American Minister has
thought it his duty to close his mission and
leave Mexico, waiting only for passports.
51exico, though her ministry, takes the
highest tone of arrogance towards the
United States, hacked, if not directly aid
ed, by British agents.
There will be a lowering aW tone there
when they hear how completely the Mexi
can party here has been prostrated in ithe
. .eJections. Half of ti Mexican bravado
springs out of their confidence of support
in the administration that was to be but is
rejected by the people in advance.
Sudden Death.-We regret to learn that
the Rev. William King-an old and
highly respected Baptist Clergynan. who
resided 10 or 12 miiles above this place
wvas found dead, near his dwelling. on
Saturday evening last. He left the house
near 12 o'clock, apparently in his usuael
health, and was discovered by his nife,
about an hour by stun, perfectly dead.
A Jury of Inquest was hteld over the body
that night by the Coroter, who returned
a verdict that the deceased catme to his
death by the visitation of God. H e was
about 66 years old, and had heetn a preach
er of the Gospel, atnd resided in this yin
cinity, during the last 40 or 50 years.
