RAISING THE DEVIL
An bagtbou nerve enough I' he said.
That Old Man, above whose head
Unaimnber'd years had roll'd -
'And but thou nerve to view,' he cried.
.90 incarnate Fiend that Heaven defied I
Aft tio indeed so bold ?

Sasiin, rash youth. the withering blaze
Of that unsartbly eye,
Thea blasm wher'er at lights,-the breath
'%at, like the Simoon. scatters death
On all tat yet oa die!
Dar'st thon confront that fearful rman,
That rides the whirlwind and the storm
la wild unholy revel?
The termos. of that blasted brow,
Arehangel's one. though ruain'd now
Ay,-dars't thou face Tux Davn.I
#Idere, the desperate Youth replied.
And phseed biumsh that Old Man's side.
n fiere and Irantic glee.
UTbleached his cheek and firm his limb;

In all his Gorgon terrors clad,'
Is worst, his fellest shape! tie kad

'la hen thy wish!' Albertus said.
Aid sigh'd. and shook his houry head,
With many a bitter groan.
ie drew the mystic circle's bound.
With skull ad cros-bones f.nc'd around j
ie traced full many a sig'il there;
lie mauer'd any a backward pray'r,
That sounded like a curse
He coues!'-he cried with wild crimace,
%The Fellest of Apollyou's race !'
Then in his startled upil's face
Be dash'd-an rrY Pcas!!

.2%e DTvil in tAe&Buttermilk.-luring
my stay in Ireland. being on a visit to a
friend, I was captivated by the "cherry

Protestant Parson, who besides preaching
the doctrine of the Goipel, kept a verf~
* extensive farm. After a few side winks
*t this pretty damsel. I determined in
make her a visit during the tiune the preach.
er delivered from the pulpit his "twice
told sermon. I 'vent accordingly as soon
asi saw the parson and his dame enter
the church. It wo ld be needless to tell
of the many soft words I whispered into
* her ear; suffice it to say. I found her just
as I should wish; but unluckily, love is so
insensible to every thing but his own ge
nial feelings, thet I rather overstayed mny
- We were aroused from our pleasing chat
bythe old man and his wife thundering at
sedoor for admittance. What was to be
anoee?-there was not the usual retreat for
'lovers-a- backi doorCe-to leap from either
of th. windows would have been toi plunge

-there I sat up to the enin in milk; one
bueket more and I should have been a
drowned man? I hit upon somctbing at
last. Just as the deadly fourth was im
pending. I leapt on the top of the churi',
all bemeared with creau-%haking a-y
self and making the most diabolical fnce's
the human visage could formn.-It had the
desired effect, the maid favoring the trick,
screamed out, the devil was in the butter
milk, and ran upstairs. The parson and
his wife scampered into the kitchen, and
tumbled head aud heels over each other!
I took the time-jumped off the churn
out of the wigdow, and did not -look be
hind me until I arrived safe at home.
Thus ended any adventure with the dia
ry maid. A story got among the preach
ers superstitious flock, 'that the devil had
risen from the churn. and accused him of
impiously breakingithe sabbath.'
The parson himself really believing that
it was the devil. neveragain attempted to
make butter on Sunday.
Extraorditary power of the Hlunik
Wi.-A long time ago we recollect
bearing of some experimepts performed
by.two ancient graduates of Ecole P'oly
techinoqe. A drop of quicksilver herme
trically sealed in a small nut-shell. cove
red with was, attached to a thread, on
being held over a parcel of dimes placed
in a straight line will move from one end
of the silver to another and its motion can
be stopped by a mere effort of the will!
If this ball be held over a gold watch a
rotary movement can be obtained, and thei
motion seversed by the action of the mind!
We tried the experiment ye terday and
found it to be perfectly successful.

Efcctr of a Lie.-Last week Hugh
Quin was put on trial for breaLing open a
letter. It appeared in evidence that the
wife of the gentleman to whom the Leiter
was directed, broke it open. and to avoid
the resentment of her husband, shc reques
red Mr. Quin to say that he had broke
the seal. This he did, and he was im
diately apprehended on a charge. which
if proved against him, would have con
signed him to impriaonment for a year
and subjected him to a fine of $300. .The
lady was obliged to come forward andex

Tetotal Wedding.-A friend. sending n
Marriage notice from Chester says, -if it
had been at all convenient, we should
have bad our share of the cake." For his
kind intention, we thank him. But we
are more gratified with another item of in
formation he gives us. He says. "the
weather was .warm, the campany large,
nad lots of cold-water used. but nothing
stronger." By the by. there was a great
discovery made at this same wedlinag par
ty, it was, that a glass of coal water would
p do just as well, or better, to sip, while eat -
ing a piece of pound-cake. as a glass of
wine or any thing else--Tem. Adc.
A Kiss and the Consequences.-Sheriflt,
Ware. of Gloucester county, N. J., gave
Mr. Win. Bateanso a se ere horsewbip
ping at Blackwoodtown, on Sunday. the
21st ultimo. at the doorof the Presbvterian
church! The provocation, it is said, was
kissing or attempting to kiss the Sheriff'- 1
wife. Mr. Bateman was flogged till his
clothes hung In tatters and his whole per
son was covered with blood. His kissiug I
propensities will be checked for a while at
least.
