Te mperance.-In our last week's paper.
we erred in staiting that the -elcction.
pledge' was that of the Columbia Temper
ance Society. as we have since been told,
that it in a separate and distinct pledge. got
up by persons who are not memcrs of any
tem perance society. Our opinions are not
affected by this. for there are societies
whisc pledges embrace such doctrines;
nen should be careful what they sign-and
when they know they are right take the
temperance pledge, and stick to it-but no
interference with their suffrages should be

Fire.-A fire broke ont last night about 9
o'clock. in a small wooden building, in the
lower part of the city. occnpied by a colored
family, which. togetier with its contents. was
eantarely costumned. We were not able to latn
