I approach this subject. therefnre, with those neelians of solemnity. wl 'ch reflec lion upon it is wont to produce, and at the same time those feelings of delicac# tich arise from a knowledge of the bearing th.it this subject has upon the cases of ty noin istering brethreu, myself and the several churches of our body. It is proper here to remark that the question propos-ted for consideration, presupposes a de crncy it fhe support of the ministry. Ve ceietr fully admit that soie churches its our de nomination, (and to it our remarks are confined.) form honorable exceptions io this remark, u hilst on the other hand jus tice requires us to state, that uther" (and loot a fen) are guilty of rhe an ful %in of ..robbin Goi" mentioned by the prophet ia withholding, front the ministers who serve them, that support which they amay justly claim at their hands. Before entering fully upon the di.cus sion of this subject, allow me to premise two things: 1st. What are we to under stand by a minister's support ! 2d. From what -ource must it be derived ? (I.) What constitltes a luinister's sup port I Upoc this subject the Scriptures of the Now Testament are sileut as o the asmut of -carnal things" which a muiiasti rishoull receive. From the n ratings of .ioe-,hnt ever, we learn that it was the especial --r der of fleavcn that tithes or a tenth part of their aucome should he appropriated by the Jews to religious purp,.Ls. That the Levites, w.ho were iiim:.ters in the Jtw ish temple inferior to thr prie.t, should re ceive a tenth part of the corn, &c., who were also required to give a* tithe of their amount unto the priest. ipon the remain der of what was left the Jew-s Aller paymg the Levites, was another tihe leied for the service of the talbernacle, temitple, and ministers thereof. See Nun. Id: 20. 21. :11.
