U AVING Completed the first volunin of the Farmer's Advocate, the Publiser now presents to his patrons and the public. a Pros pectus for the scond volumn; respetfrully so liciting that share of patronage, sufflitent to justiry devoting the time and -ttention, so ab solutely necessary in prosecuting the work to advantage, both to himself and the reader. To those who'have attentively perused the first volume, it .vould be measurably super fluous to enter into a minute detail of the sub ject matter, designed to occupy the pages of -the second, further than to say, that the same :general course will still be pursued. But for the information of those who may not have been conversant with the first volume, a few rerarks designating the leading objocts of the work, are hereby presented. As the subsistenee of the whole human fami ly depends on the productions of the earth ; and as these supplies can only be produced in proportion to the fertility of the soil, combined with the skill of The cultivator,-the first and primary object of the Advocate, will be the promotion of those two important considra tions. The Medanical Arts, from their being so in dispensably connected with the interests of the farmer, will receive a due share of attention. Literature ant the Literary institutions ofthe country, ass having a direct agency. in raising the dignity of the farming class to its proper standard, will also meet with a cordial support. The Sciences, and especially those immedi ately connected tcith, and subserviertto, the agricultural intetest, will receive prompt atteu tion. In short, the Advocate is designed to furnish a convenient medium, through which the sig gestions of theory results of experience, the productions and progress of literature and liter dry institutions, and the discoveries of scienti fic investigations, may be reciprocally commu nieated for the benefit of all. Terms.-The Advocate will be published twice a month, or twenty-four numbers of six teen pages each, for ayear; making a volume of 384 pages, with title page and index com plete for binding. a Price per year, if paid in advance, and or dered to one Post Office, for single copies $1, for twelve copies $10, for twenty coptes $15, for fifty copies $25, with an additional sum of ten per cent, for every three month delay of payment. COOK, & Co. lambrg. Feb 26,1840 tf 4 Vegetable Life Medicines. T HESE Medicines are indebted for their name to their manifest and sen sible action in purifying the springs and channels or lire, and enduing them with renewed tone and vigor. In many hun dred certified cases which have been made public, and in almost every speciesof dis ease to which the human frame is liable, the happy effects of MOFFATS LIFE PILLS AND PH(ENIX BITTERS have been gratefully and publicly ac knowledged by the persons henefitted, and who were previously unacquainted with the beantifully philosophical principles upon which they are compounded, and upon which they consequently act. The LIFE MEDICINES recommend themselves in diseases of every from & de scription. Their first operation is to loosen the various impurities and crudities con stantly settling around (hem, and to re move the hardened lmces which collect in the convolutions of the small, intestines. Other medicines only partially cleanse thiese and leave such collected masses behind as to produce hahitual costiveness, with all its train of evils, or sudden diarr hOa, with its imminent dangers. This tact is well known to all regular anato mists, who examine the human bowels after death; and hence the prejudice of these well informed men against quack medicities-or medicines prepared and heralded to the public by ignorant persons. The second effect of the Life Melicines is to cleanse the kidneys and the bladder, and by this means, the liver and the lungs, the healthful action of which entirely de pends upon the regularity of the urinary organs The blood, which takes its red color frmn the agency of the liver and the lungs before it passes into the heart, being thus parified by them, and nourished by food coming from a clean stomach, cour ses freely through the veines, renews every part of the syttem, and triumphantly mounts the banner of health in the bloom ing cheek. Molfat's Vegetable Life Medicines have been thoroughly tested, and pronounced a sovereign remedy for Dyspepsia, Flatu lency, Palpitation'of the Heart, Loss of Appetite, Heartburn and Headach. Rest lessness, lil-temper, Anxiety, Languor and Melancholy, Costiveness, Diarrhwa, Chol era, Fevers of all kinds, Rheumatism Gout, Dropsies of all kinds, Gravel, Worms, Asthma and Consumption, Scurvy, Ulcers, Inveterate Sorce, Scobutic Eruptions and Bad Com plexions, Eruptive complaints. Sallow, Cloudy, and other disagreeable Complexions, Salt Rheum, Erysipelas, Common Colds and Influenza, and various other complaints which afflict the human frame. In FEVER and AoUE, particular ly, the Life Medicines have been iost eminently successful : so much so, that in the Fever and Ague districts, Physicians almost universally prescribe them. All that Mr. Mo'at requires of his pati entsis to be particular in taking the Life Medicines strictly according to the direc tions. It is not by a newspaper notee, or by anything that lie himself may say in their favor, that be hopes to gain credit. It is alone by the results of a fair trial. MOFFAT'S MEDICAL MANUAL. designed as a domestic guide to health, This little pamphlet, edited by W. B; Molfat, 375 Broadway, New York, has been published for the purpose of explain ing more fully Mr. Moffat's theory of dis eases. and will be found highly interesting to persons seeking health. It treats upon prevelent diseasos, and the causes thereof. Price, 2.5 cents-for sale by Mr. Mof'at's agents getally. These aiiluable Medicines are for sale by C. A. DOWD. Edgefield C. H. The hi h and universal reputation of -the Bianideth ills, readers it unnecessary tocom ment largely on their particular virtues. As an anti-bilious and purgative medicine, they are unequalled by any. Their purifying efiect on the blood is universally allowea-all that.have ever used have approved and recommended them. In many cases where the dreadful ravages of ulceration had laid bare ligament Bnd bone, and where to all appearance, no human means could save life, have patients by the use ofthese Pills, been restored to good health; the devour in disease having beencompletely eradicated. In consequence of the pleasantness of their operation, they are universally used in every section of this wide extended country where they are made known, and are fast surperseding every other Preparation of professed similar import. Upwards of Fourteen Thousand cases have been certibed as cured, solely from their use since the introduction of that into the U. States, thus establishino the fact beyond all doubt, that the Brandrel Pills cure the (appa rontly) most opposite diseases, by the one simple act of continually evacuatimg the bow els with them, until t ie disease gives way; therefore, whatever may be said of the TUKOnY, the UTILITY of the PRACTICE is now BETUND all DOUBT. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES 1s any one of this class made an Agent. My own established Agents have INVARIABLY an ENGRAVED Certifi. cate, signed B. Brandreth, M. D, in my own hand writing. This is renewed yearly-and when over twelve months old, it no longer guarantees the genuineness of the medicine, it would be well, therefore, for purchasers to carefully examine the Certificate. The seal is not wax. but embossed on the paper with a steel seal. Tuomsom Contemplating a material improveinebt of the Mirrir, on the commencement of the en. suing volume, we -have already commenced making the necessary arrangements for that purpose, tnd as.we look with confidence to eql friends and patrons for encouragement, we have determined to give'them this early notice of our design. tleugh a semi-monthly issue was deened to be the most expedient in the. commence' ment of ihe publication'of the Mirror, . when the ground wiich it occupied, being ei. elusively devoted to literature, wasyet untriedj and when our domestic resonices were yet un known-we feel that the time bas now arrived when a weekly publicationis demanded. Enu tertaining this conviction, we have resolved td issue the ensuing volume weekly, and to maks such improvements in the appearance and pla of the work. as will render it still more worthy the liberal patronage of the southern public. - Firmly believing that the only .tesns requi' site to placeour domestic literate upon ad. equality with that of any.otier section of thae union, is the establishment of a lieray, media urn at home, of sufficient standing and charact ter to divert it into its proper channel.-we ~ar. resolved to render the .m irror equal in appearS auce with any of the Northern journals of the same kink, a'ad if the friends of southern liter;. ature will unire in giving it the reputatiod which southern genius and sonthern talents are so eminently calpable of imparting to its pa ges, we doubt not at we shall be able to ren; der the work much more acceptable to the soutli ern public. With a view ofaccomplishing this design wd shall secure the assistance of an able adjanct iii the editorial department. and shall spare neith; er pains nor expense to give character aud ina terest to the work. No material change will be made in the plan or arrangementof the Mirror, which -will stilt be devoted to general literature, excepttie in; troduction of a critical department for the re view of new works, which will be in the hands of a gentleman of approved taste and matuird judgement. The DI irror will be printed on su perior paper with handsome new type, and will be executed with thestrictest regmad to neatness and taste in its typography. Each number will be enveloped in a neatly printed cover, entitled "Augusta Mirror Nerws Seet'," comprising four closely printed pages, in which' will be given thP 1:EWS OF THE wEEK, foreign arid domestic, carefully compiled from an extensive exchange, together with all the matter of interest usually contained in an ordinary weekly newspaper. By this arrangement the readers of the Mir. ror will, besides being supplied with a volume of 416 large quarto pages of choice literature, receive as much news matter in the course or the year as is contained in most of the newspa pers of the. day, and all for the addititional charge of only two dollars to our present sup scription price. We sincerely hope the above plan. for our third volume will meet the approbation of every friend of southern literature. We have always considered the Mirror, embracing as at does un its design, the broad repulic ofletters. best adap ted to foster our infant literature. More diver sified in the character of its contents than the graver and more dignified magazine, ranging as it does from the the lighter to the more ele. aled branches of literary composition. "From graveto gay, frm iirdey.to sewer." it it certainly best stted to the tastes of the greatest number;~and while it affords equally wholesome and refreshing draughts for the well-read mind, itattrarts and lures the young to drink of the Parnassian str am. We have aimed in the adoption of the contemplated im. provements to place the Mirror upon an equal ooting with our northern contemporaries in regard to cheapness and now, all that we ask is a liberal share of that patronage extended to them by our pleple, and we pledge ourself to render the Mirror equally deserving their sup port. Terms for the third volume, $5 in advance. Any person obtaining five subscribers will be entitled to the sixth copy. PRIZ E TA L ES.
