Sidney E. Morse, Esq. WVe of-course. do not understand the nature the iuveotion, but in common with othere we can see its eiIents, and wve also know the rapidity of the process by which the work is performed. We d - not besit ate to express our belief that it will revolution izo- he business~of-engraving in several of -its branches, and, particularly in that of map-making. The Map of Connecticut above referred to, is done in a style quite superior to that of common wvood-engr~a ving; yet it by no means reaches the full powers of the new art. One'great advan tage which Cerography (for so Mr. Mtorse. has named his it'vention) possesses over wood-engraving, is its enabling the arriit .to insert as many names, roads, &c. as can be done by copperplate engraving;as many in short, as there is roonrn for oh the Map. Necessity wvas the mother of this inven tion, as of many others. Mr. Morse wns engaged in preparing Maps to accompany hsis Observer. The rest of the story is told. (so far as he sees fit to tell it at present.) in the following parugruaphs, copied. from the No. of thbat paper for the present week; "From the nature of woodl-aut engra ving, we were under the necessity of o initting roads, names of towne andt other informatioun. to such' an extent, that when wn comnnred them with the cer-m..te maps from which we copied, they lost im our eye.. ncur nili vaiuc. ]n reflecting on- the mitter,'we lecatle stifiel that t new miode: of engraving was prctienbfle, by which miap-plutes could be easily aude cOltMi:inig all the mformaisoin ot clipper plat np, aiti yet printed ill conntectiOnt with Ivpe, under tle let ter pires.
