R Nome %wss. FOR TZ ADVERTISER. THE RUM SELLJ-:R'S ADDRESS TO HIS PATRONS. fe drunkards, who, in grog delight, And thus pass time away, Here you may sit, and swear and fight, And gam8le night and dayi Let parsons preach, and women scold, And temperate people frown; I've liquors strong for young and old, Step in, and pour them down! Ye married men! ne'er heed your wives, Or mind your children's rage, You'll ne'er feel pain for their sad lives, When you have drained my kegs! Ye single men I pray draw near, Feel not at all above it; Although you now may hate andfear, You soon will learn to love it! Ye aged men your days are short. Get tipsey when you can; Drop in and join the madd'ning sport, While lasts life'.s little span! When sober, thinking men are dead, Friends weep for the them, the bitter tear; But none for you, the tear will shed, When you have left this mundanesphere! G. BE QUIETDO! I'LL CALL MY MOTHER. As I was sitting in a wood, Under an oak-tree's Ieary cover, Musing in my pleasant solitude, Who should come by, butJohn my lover! Ele pressed my hand, and kissed my cheek; Then warmer growing. kissed the other. While I exclaimed and strove to shriek. "Be quiet-do. i call my mother!" Se saw my anger was sincere, And lovingly began to chide me; And wiping from my cheek the tear, He sat him on the grass beside me, Ve feigned such pretty, amorous woe, Breathed such sweet vows one after an other, I could but smile while whispering low, "Be quiet--do! I'll call my mother!" ge talked so long, and talked so well, And swore he meant not to deceive me, I felt more grief than I can tell, When with a kiss he ruse to leave me. "Oh, John!" said I, 'and must thou go! I love thee more than any other! There is no need to hurry so, u ever meant tocaU my mother!" Miscellaneous. MULBERRY TREES. The most rapid mode ofmultiplying the Morus Multicaulis trees. is to lay down in June the maine stem with all its branches, the cutting of two buds producing often two stems-so that a thousand cuttings in the first year, will produce thirty thousand; in the second year nine hundredi thousand -int the third, tweutgseven millions, andl so on at the rate of thirty fold increase in each succeeding year. The general opinion seems to be that the tree will stand our winters uninjured, ad though some are ofa difierent opinion, and but few doubt the roots will survive the severest of our weather. and send up many shoots in the annual plant. The cultivationt, harvesting, and pres'ervation of it is less~ laborious, and expensive than that of corn,I or potatoes, whilst the yield is greater and more profitable-it would be well how ever, to adopt different modes for the bet ter assurance of success: and besides the drills, to plant in hedges six feet apart~and three feet apart in the hedge-also, as standard trees, in squares of eight feet. The planting should be dlotte as early in the Spring, as the ground can he well worked-there should he no rear of injury from wet. or frost-more might he ap~pre hended from late planting, as an early drought would suspend vegetation. If, th'e ground be not sufficiently rich, it should be improved by a good compost of well rotted inanure, with alamall quanttitvy of lime or ashes.prepared in the preceding wvinter. The drills should not be opened till the time of planting, when as' many treesi shoul be taken from the depository, as can be pua down in two or three hiours. and no more, so'that they may not sulfer from exposure to the air and sun. With a sharp knife, or a fine saw, in the autumn, the tree should be separated from the root, 'about four- inches above ihei ground, and the earth turned over the stumps -carefnly-and the -bodies and * brainches, beina preserved during the win tor, should be dlivided into cuttings of sin gle or-doubleauds, leaving always two buds of mature wood at the upper end. In separating the 'branches, care should he taken to avoid injuring the hud next the. main stem-the cuttings tlus taken should be placed carefully in a basket, and screen edl from isun-they should he planted * as before directed, and covered as soon as possible, taking care that the earth he well broken and pressed to all piorts of the cut. Iings, so thatit. willlie lightly, yet closely. .Po-rTkrr..-Quoddy Blues.--Hezekiah Prince of Thomaston, Me., in a letter to the editor of the-Malte -Farmer, refers t a caninuication which hits recently hadl thairns. of the newspapeis.-stating the greom produet of Raharpy Potatoes, In a certai'se where 20 1-2 bushels were raisedl from 276hills, four feet apart, ma king~ about sevetiteen square rods of land,. the prodlucebeing ss than 200 bushels to ain ace, he-says-K asda qa I have- the seabon past, raedaeqa quatity of Piitatoes2of a large size antd superior quality, (Quoddy blues) in leiss ,han ne half the number of hills. and on one fourth of the quantity of land, without any extra attentiolli my potatoes were planted three feet apart, threet-ye.oflarge potatoesin etch hill, manured with new hurn manure-and they yielded a bushel to six and a half hills, an average of ten pounds to a bill, and more than eight hun dred bushels to an acre. Potatoes Produced by Cuttings.-] t is stated that an English farmer who resides near Bristol, has succeeded in raising this valuable root froincuttiugs. The method was thus, as described by himself ,When the potatoes were abouteix inchea high, I cut off the tops about eight iuchf< apart, with a flat dibble, pressing the earth carefully against them. gave them water, and afterwards hoed them as an ordinary crop. I produced this way a good crop. Test of Good Flour.-Flour which is pure and unadulterated, may he known by your seizing a handful briskly. and sqee zing it half a minute; it preserves ile form of the hand in one piece, although placed rudely on the table. Not so with that which contains foreign substane<, its adhesive property is weak. and it falls to pieces i zimediately. The whiten s. of flour is no evidettce of its goodness; the different materials used in i .lulterating flour, have a tendency to whiten it. Specimen of Juvenile Eloquence at Uti ca, N- C.--Yes, Mr. Lhairman, I do not believe there is a man, womati, or child. in this house, who have at rived at the age of fifty years and tipwards. but what has felt thIs truth thundering through their brains for ceutaries," Texian Cotton.-The San Augustine Herald, boasts of a cotton stalk, raised near that place thirteen feet six inches high, and yielding four hundred bolls. The Eye.- A person may discipline the muscles of the face, and he may control the voi,-etbut there is something in the eye be'ond the will, and we frequently find it giving the tongue, the lie direct. A Man out of Debt is Rick.-A person being asked how old he was, answered he was in health; atid how richhe was, ob served, he was not in debt. 1IE*4D QURTElLS, Abbeville, 431h Feb. AS39. ORDERS No.1.
