Harney Williams, alias Harney
White, Plenty White, the murderer of
J a men M, Hughs, is still at large.
Additional reward is offered for Ins
arrest. We think it now amounts to
about 1200. No douht hut this fellow
is now in Marion county, in the
neighborhood of his old haunt. We
have it from pretty good au.hority
that the same week of the murder he
worked two days near Whiteville N.
C., cutting boxes for Mr. Toon, and
took the train at Whiteville, on Sat
urday night, for Marion.

week to the county. This is at a rate

It seems to us that $12,20 per
mouth is too much for simply dieting
priuonera in jail, unless they are to be
fed on luxuries. It is a common sav

in a year and at this rate, per capita,
the leed of the people of this county
would bo $1,752,000 per year. Thin
is more than all the taxable property
ol the county i? valued at. So wc
have the astonishing fact in figures
that tfa> people of I lorry eat up their
whole county, dirt and all, in one

The Legislature in striking for
economy in State expenditures should
also look to those of tho Counties

work. It was noticed in the Horry
Nkwb that Mrs. Jane Not man, now
nearly 90 years of age, held receipt No.
1, in this county, of the Hampton tax
contribution. A few days since Mrs.
Norman received the following note
from Mr. and Mrs. Judge Monro,

No County Auditors Will be Appointed.
The Kingstrce Stur says:
"We are authorized to say thnt
Gov. Hampton will not appoint a
county auditor for tins, or any other
count y, at present; as it is expected
the office will soon be abolished to
save expense, and the dutie? oonlerred
on the county treasurer.
Patriots waiting for this office to
turn up and fall on their broad shoulders
need no longer stop the plow.
They will not be mcntieed on their
country's alter.
