McMillan, of Marion, commenced in Conwiyboro the publication ol the paper called the Horry Sentinel. That paper did not receive a suuicicnt support from the people ol Horry to meet the necessary expenses of its publication, and in February 1809 Mr. McMillan was preparing to take down the press, box up the type and move all back to Marion, when feeling the necessity for the publication of a newspaper in our County as a medium for disseminating news, and the advancement and cultivation ol intelligence in our county, myself and Mr. C. 1*. Bolton bought out the /Sentinel and started the IKJliliY BISWS. At that time I thought to have nothing more to do with the HORRY M?\YS than, ae a citizen, to encourage its growth ami circulation in every way I could. Hut before it was fairly in the field Mr. Bolton died, and its continuation, or the abandoning the enterprise before the first year was half out, devolved on me. Believing nttliat time that by keeping up the publication of tho paper long enough to get it fairly before the onniiln ami f Kit ML'I ll? I Iml i >< 1 education, Violh among the whites and blacks, that it wis hoped would be derived from the free schools, and ail increase in our mail facilities then lew, but now no County in the State can boast more or better, and for which we labored earnestly, that such a necessity (or newspaper reading in the County would bo created and felt that we would be sustained in our efforts and the HORIvY NKWS receive that liberal support that showed that people ot Horry County had too much pride to show to the world that she was not in the present progressive raeo for intelligence, now making rapid strides throughout the world, and that if Marion could sustain two first class pa* pevs she at least would one. 1 therefore continued its publication, and from that time to this have labored night and day to keep it up, and that too, under difficulties and hinderanccs that but one other beside myself knows. But, however pained I may be to do so, I must now plainly stale tho situation. Not only have I not received the first dollar for my time and services, hut for moro than four years have I actually paid out ol my pook? t money from my labor and means outside of tho printing otiico, and I now candidly say to the people of I Lorry that unless yon come up liberally to my help I shall suspend the publication of tho JVcrcs by or before the first of October. In Marion, Georgetown and other Counties their papers are largely sustained by the advertising of the Merchants. A resolution ratilying the action of the Stale Convention and promising sup port to the nominees thereof, was unanimously adopted. I'nanimity of sentiment seemed to pervade the entire meeting; and should the county ticket, prove as satislaotory as that of the State, Green Sea, will roll up a larger vote, perhaps, at the approaching election than ever before, Ferd D Hryant, Esq., was unanimously chosen to complete the number of delegates to the County Nominating Convention on .Monday, the 4ih of September; alter which the meeting adjourned subject to the call ol the chairman.
