over a track where a slick of timber
had been hauled a tew weeks previous

The rirnp and body o? the mare up to
the shoulders and neek was completely
buried in the earth. Mack Cox
brought a light and after examining
the situation they procured tools and
went to work to dig her out. Tlu-y
began digging the dirt horn each side
of the animal so ps to get helps under
her, but the more they dog thv more
she sank down. At last they hit upon
the expedient of raining small brush
and turf under her, in this way
they succeeded, after working from
early dark until day break, in getting
her out.
On inspecting the place next morning
they found they had dug a hole
over ten lo?it by eight, and four feet
deep. Down in the hole where they
had not thrown brush and turf the
mud was soft enough to hog :i duck
and of a hiuc marl color. The singularity
of the thing is thai such a hog

George Applewhite, the last of the

In the Netherlands there are many
churches tilled with rare and exquisite
carvings, with altar pieces, shrines,
pulpits, choirs verit ies louts, and sadistic,
a laden with a wealth ot intricate

of this curious labor are to lie found,
in the great Cathedral of St. Jacques,
where Peter Paul Kuhetis, the painter,

and fantastic carvings, out of which

curiously at I ho prosaic present.
Sometimes the birds arc a little loo
odd to be real, the dingons are almost
too funny lor a cathedral, and the
flowers and leaves are not constructed
strictly in accordance with botany;
but, oil the whole, you feel that it
things in nature are not like those in
the carvings, they at least ought to be
?so charming, so droll, so satisfactory
are tlicy!
In S?. Andrew's Church, of which
young Jan's mother had so many
tender memories, stands a largo carven
pulpit, ol a pccularly daring design
for artists w ho work in wood, it repivscuis
a locky crag near the sea-shore

in which stands the figures ol
the apostles Andrew and Peter. Hebind

are looking earnestly at a figure of the
Saviour, which stands in an attitude as
