The hypo-sulphate or loa<'!iinf? process,
for the reduction <>f silver ores,
is becoming very popular in Lowor
California and Noi thorn Mr\ioo,
whore it has lately been introduced.
The process is best adapted to ores
abounding in sulphur. The rock is
crushed dry, and only requires to ho
tine enough to pass through a screen
of twenty or thirty meshes to the
inch. It is then roasted in revorbu,
tory furnaces with salt. The rousted
ore is then placed in large tanks or
ubs holding eight to ton tons, and a
stream of clear water turned on until
the ore is covered, and kept running
live or six hours. The water is then
run off and a cold solution of hyposulphate
of soda is passed through the
ore in the same manner, until it is
ascertained by the tost that the hypo*
sulphate solution carries no more sil
ver. The precipitation of the sllvei
now hold insolation is accomplished
by adding to the hypo-sulphate solution

any intelligent workman can comprehend
