Gore, sentenced l?y Judge Townsend,
on the 4th ot August la.-t, to six
month imprisonment at hard labor in
the Penitentiary for grand larceny,
came home on furlough Thursday
night to attend the meeting yesterday,
and will remain until after the election*
We asked him i( he was pardoned
because of his good conduct in prison.
He said no, but he had very influential
friends from Marion who moved
in his behalf.
Jeff says it is no trouble to get a
pardon it you only have friends to
take the petition up to mass Kratik>
but thinks the friends of those in there
had better make hay while the sun
shines.

The latest news from the 1/ce Metnori
nl Association is that I'rof, Edward
A'. Valentine, the sculptor, has procured
from Vermont a block of pure
white marble, from which he is now
fashioning a recumbent figure ol Gen'l
Lee, to be placed on the grand monument
that is now being erected at his
tomb, at the Washington and Leo
University, Lexington, Va. The figure
represents Gen'l Lee reposing in
an easy position upon a couch, his
head and* shoulders slightly raised

stretched by the Hide of his sword, his
right arm laid across his breast. He
wears lull Confederate uniform, including
boots and gauntlets, and a

rather than death.
This monument, when surmounted
v with such a fine work ot art, will be a
lasting memorial to one of Virginia's
Itoblest sons and patriots. The members
of this Association are gentlemen
