A Mobile Mystery,
Some singular events which several
years ago occurred in a house in
Mobile, Ala., occupied by a highly respectable
lady, her recently married
son and bis wife, and two single
young men, are thus described l>y the
Mobile Register:
The newly-married lady was ono oi
the most excitable and nervous individuals
thai ever lived, and to make
matters worse, her husband wn? onnal- I

was entered night alter night, silver,
collhes, tfco., stolen, ehlorolonn administered
to the inmates, and a copious
supply of light-wood and kerosene
found in some portion ot the house
nearly every moving.

young men retried to spent almost
every night in walking around the
house, or secreted in it, resembling j
two movable armories, but all to no
purpose. Five or six times during
iho night the young married man
would suddelv rise up in bed and tiro j
his pistols in rapid succession toward I
a window and breaking the glasa into
atoms, while his wife would scream
at the top ol her voice and arouse the j
neighbors. This state ol nflairu continued
for two or three weeks, at the
end of which several mysterious en- !
| tries had been made?no one could
tell low tile burglar got into thel
house?and all the class was shot <-ut.

the young man's wife, assisted by the

the thorough seareh
which was instantuneously made, and
the tact of every daor and window in

In the morning over five pounds of
gun powder was found under the
steps in the young men's room, besides
a large quantity of matches and
Leroser.e. 'l'ho young men kept up a
thorough watch nightly for throe
weeks, at the end ol which the house j
was set on tire and totally destroyed
l?y tire and gun-powder. No one has
cverer been aide to solve the ruytery, I
though we have heard conjecture concerning
it. Of course we do not protend
to set it up as a ghost story, but
with many others we believe the robber
and incendiary was the young
married man himself, and that he was
a somnambulist, lie and his wife are
j still living in this State, and one ol
the young men stands in the first
ranks of Mobile's energetic suns.
A Monkey in Trouble.

places one oi his pet monkeys fastened
to the collar of the dog by a string.
As a general thing the monkey enjoys
his ride, hut \ve. saw him a day or two
since when ho would willingly have
traded himself off for some less pn\ ileged
specimen of his species. His
canine steed, luring allowed to roam
the streets at will, saw another dog
I hat he thought he could whip, and
1 forthwith went lor hint like a hairy burcane.
In a moment hotli dogs 'were
on their hind legs and going for each
other like two sausage machines.
This made times very lively for the
monkey, as the strange dog evidently
considered him as part and parcel of
his antagonist. Such wails of despair
as. that monkey uttered, and such hideous
laces as he made we never heard

where the war was going on, and
thence peep over occasionally, his
jaws quivering, visage distorted, and
his eyes starting from their sockets

When he jumped to the ground the
string held him, and he found himself
trampled under the feet ol both friend
and foe, and he was glad to get again
upon the back of }?is steed and face
the battle. The poor monkey was in
a worse lix. than the boy who stood on
the burning deck, and had not the

he did not get over examining tho end

after the battle; perhaps lie had fears
of hydrophobia.

respectful in demeanor, although

and blasphemous conversation,
and a constant demand on the bar for
drink. After the children had satisis
fled themselves, the ladies knelt,
ami a long, Icrvant and earnest prayer
was o lie red by the leader of the band.
The ladies then sent ti.o children outsido
tho door of the saloon, and themselves
filed through the crowd out of
the front entrance. The deacon did
the honors on the occasion gr iciously
and invited the ladies to call again
and bring the children when they got
hungry. Tho ladies were all of the
highest respectahilit y.

ting noses over the city. Chninbelain'K
headquarters, which are over
Fine's bur-room, aro crowded. Patterson
and Worthington do the lionors,
and whiskey flown freely. Moses's
headquarters are at his residence, and
thoio is whiskey in abundance.
Things at present have an exceed
ingly muddled appearance, and it is difI
fi/.iilr to ?n v who will ho i lie nominee
of the party. There are contesting
delegates from Charleston, ] Scan fort,
Colleton, Snartanburg. llarnwell and
Chester. Moses claims to have sixtylive
votes in the convention. Chamberlain
claims an equal number, but
neither can be relied on. 1 have r.ot
yet found n delegate who announces
himself a Moses man. About onothird
arc pledged to vote lor Chamberlain.
rive rest are not yet committed,
but will doubtless vote for Chamberlain,
if his chances arc good. Tho
Maekey delegation from Charleston
will probably be admitted.
Tbeve is some talk of a third man,
not yet named, and mention, lias, also,
been made of Senator lbtnn, of I lorry,
and Dr. Winnsmitli, ol Spartenburg,
but neither ot these has any strength

Chamberlain is supported by Melton,
Klliott, Patterson, Kainey, .Judgo
Alackey and other leanding lights ol
the party. It is said that Scott will
run, hut he is in Ohio, iiud will probably
stand no chance.
The delegates aie composed ol old
political hocks, who all bellow loudly
tor reform. Probably over ninetentlis
ol the delegates here was members
of the Legislature; such men as
Whittomore, Leslie, Andrews, Whippet*,
tfcc. Of the entire number fully
four-fiilths ol them are colored men.

An Appeal to the (Jood Sense of the South.
[From the New Yoik Herald.}
The ill-feeling between the North
and South, which resulted in our civil
war, was thirty years in ripening; but
it would not require thirty years, nor
halt that period, to lan the hostility oi
the races to the point of general bloodshed
if it goes on at its present pace.
It will not do to ignore the necessary
tendency of these growing sentiments
of mutual repugnance because its violent
manifestations arc as yet only
local and sporadic. The dangerous
passionso tof which they grow pcrvado
the whole South. We wish we could
impress the Southern whites with a
due sense of the importance of arresting
and controlling these ill-boding
tendencies. It they cannot keep
peace between the two rac.es nothing
is more certain than armed interference
by the Federal Government,
which nobody hi\s so much reason to
deprecate as the people of the South,
They have had enfingh of this already,
ana should not invito it again. The
precious light of selfgovf rnmcnt, po
long unpaired in the South, can bo
reacquired only hy patient efforta
during a period of internal peace.
Their experience lias taught them
how monstrously even small disturbances
are exaggerated by the incendiary
portion of the Northern press i
and the intlammatory effect ol such j
exaggerations in arousing passions J
of which political partisans are r
too ready to take advantage. We appeal
to thoughtful and patriotic Southern
citizens to save their unfortunate
section from the horrors and tint new
Fedral oppression which would accompany
and follow a war of races.
