The escape was remarkable,
and a surprise to every one; not because
erf the difficulties and obstacles
overcome, but because of the assured
belief in the mind of every one, of the
secure and safe keeping of the prisoner,
and yet the cool and deliberate
manner and case with which he made
his escape.
'ldm prisoner was kept in the cell
next to the large east room, or debtor's
room, as it is sometimes called, at the
head of the aisle, or passage way,
where he had been kept since his first
being confined in prison on the 17th
of May. Jn the cell there were two
.chains firmly attached in their centre
by a staple to the floor, leaving both
ends of the chain free, so as to shackle
prisoners. The largest one of the
chains is-very heavy, and bad u play
.of three or four feet in length. This
chain was made fast to the prisoner by
means of a hinge bund, or shackle,
passing around lbs ankle and closing
the .two ends on a link of the chain,

through a hale in the ends ol the

On the other leg of the prisoner had
been attached with a separate shackle
a ball of ftbout 30 pounds in weight to i
a five foot .chain, but -which iiad been
taken oft' the day previous.
The report that Joiner, the jailor, 1
gives is, that ou Thursday morning
when he went up to feed the prisoners, i
and to clean up the rooms, he did not
lock behind him either of the two
doors at the eihraivco oi the passage
way., hut left them open so that two
small negro girls, who went with him,
might bring out the slops; that when
fie opened Denton's cell door, he found
him sitting in his accustomed place on
his blanket where lie was chained
down, and that he left the door open
lor the girl to bring out tire slops, and
that he went to the door of the
east room, fronting the passage way,
a distance of ten feet from the cell door,
and when lie opened that door and
stopped into the room the prisoner

offering of an opportunity for escape.

Two Men Instantly Killed by Lightning.

We learn that on Friday, the 14th
i 11 st., Love Flowers and his son, a
young man aged about eighteen years,
were both instantly killed by a stroke
of lightning in a field on the plantation
of David Leggett in Marion counrn
ty, .vhere they had been engaged in
stacking fodder.

The men not returning after the
thunder storm was over, search was
made where it was known they had
been at work, and when found, their
bodies were a ghastly sight, and could
not have been identified but from the
fact that it was known that it could
be no others. The bodies were charred
and black, with not a vest age of clothing
remaining on either of them, except
a piece of shirting about as large
as a man's hand on the body of the
elder Flowers near the left armpit,
Iiis body was terribly disfigured, his
teeth torn out, and the flesh burned
from lfis head and legs, leaving the
bare skull and leg bones exposed.
The appearances indicated that the
men had just finished the last stack of
fodder, in a cluster of five, and had
sat down at the base of one ot the
stacks, probably to take shelter

found a watermelon cut in hall', with
the knife sticking in it, when the llash
of lightning struck the stacks, setting
t he {odder on fire and seemingly piling
the most of it on the dead bodies.
For several years Mr. Flowers lived
near CiaUivant's Ferry, in this county,
lie was an industrious, hard working
man, and a good citizen.
